Best of 2014

Woo Hoo hyped about the 2014 (hopefully it doesn't get delayed into 2015) Borderlands Pre-Sequel, time to think about this years hot games. It's been a great year so far, lots of wonderful things to play early this year versus just winter launches and lots interesting things coming. Looks to be perhaps the dawning of a new age full of diversity (way more so than the past and more easily accessible and consumed).

The game I've spent the most with, so far, this year can't even be put in this list, as Marvel Heroes came out last year. Man that game is sooo much better than at launch. It wasn't horrible at launch, but in comparison to how it plays now it was. I've never seen a game improve so much in it's early lifespan (not even a year yet).

The year is now about over. It's been an enjoyable year of gaming, I particularly like that there were games at different stages of the year that kept me happy for that season versus all at the end of the year. There's not a massive number of games this year I loved, but the ones I did I sunk many hours into. I hope next year fairs as well with some surprising new entries like Sunset Overdrive and Shadow of Mordor were this year.

List items

  • PC release, all games on my list are pc. This was the game that I found most enticing on the new consoles, but not enough to buy one, finally got it on PC. Wow, for my tastes, best Dead Rising yet. I thoroughly enjoyed it knocking out the main mission and dlcs. For me the HUGE new addition was being able to build weapons without having to go to a build shack and secondarily the undemanding time limit. Really enjoyable game when you just want to have a laugh destroying a ton of zombies. Truly a surprise for me this year, wouldn't have expected to have enjoyed this game as much as I do. Also has great unlocks as you progress making it more enjoyable as you go.

  • With the holiday sales, finally got an XB1 mostly for this game. Fortunately I do indeed enjoy it. The unique graphic style is top class, I enjoy seeing the monsters explode in text like POP and nuclear mushrooms when failing. The main characters dialog is enjoyable. Good to see a top notch fresh game.

  • This game rewards you for dying, got to love that twist. Excellent stealth game. I enjoy games like this one that let you acquire kick ass abilities as you go, enticing you to keep at it and making the game more enjoyable as you get deeper into it.

  • This is the worst of the Borderlands series to date, but it's the latest one and still has enough Borderlands for me to find it highly addictive. I've spent too many hours on this game while cursing at it for it's bugs and annoying missions/layouts. Definitely the buggiest Borderlands yet. Had to move this up in my ranking after putting in over a hundred hours, have to give it some credit.

  • Makes Diablo 3 much more enjoyable, giving it extended longevity. I'll go ahead and credit this game for Loot 2.0 even though Reaper isn't required for that. Perhaps if Reaper weren't to exist than Loot 2.0 never would've made it far enough along on the bulletin board to progress. Not the most original entry this year, but I've sunk many hours into it, so it deserves a good placement.

  • Brilliant reflection of the hilarious tv series. Does the name proud. If you enjoy the show you'll enjoy the game. If not then don't bother. Game cracked me up in unexpected ways. Favorite moment (don't read further if you don't want minor spoiler) so far was Butter's hounding me about looking in every corner as he kept reminding me yeah sure take your time while Kenny is getting raped. Never had a game acknowledge stupid random clicks/looting made during game play while an epic event was occurring.

  • This is a great throwback to my favorite childhood pc gaming days.

  • Risen 3 came out at a good time in between other releases. I love that now RPGs like this game have full voiced dialog. A solid action oriented RPG. Has all the good story telling of an RPG with a deep skill tree. Additionally has action requiring you to move about and attack smartly. The combat felt more exciting than Risen 2 and the game took me back to what I enjoyed in the original Risen building upon that with better graphics and less repetition.

  • Christmas Eve this game went on sale at Ubi's store for half price (thank you bad press). I watched some Twitch the day it came out and it looked like fun. I watched some more Twitch after seeing sell and it looked like fun. I bought it and it is fun. I'm not far enough to move it any further up my list, though it likely would be if I had gotten it at release. Unlike many I HATED the ship battles in Black Flag but enjoyed the rest of it. This game has been a blast so far sneaking and assassinating and climbing and outrunning and I've enjoyed the story so far. I'm looking forward to getting further in this next year when I have a bit more time (hopefully).

  • Unlike many who want this for multiplayer. I largely want it to play the last couple Halo games I hadn't managed to get around to acquiring and playing. It's a massive collection of great Halo games, usually something like this would be released game by game not all at once in one affordable package (free with my $329 xb1). A real treat for Halo fans. Disappointing about launch multiplayer issues, hopefully that will be worked out.
