About Me
My name is James Holmes, and I'm a college student majoring in journalism at Pace University in Pleasantville, NY.  My interests include video games (of course!,) sports, technology, comic books, music, tattoos and piercings, and working out. I've always had an affinity for video games from an early age, and it shows through my monstrous NES collection (somewhere around 100 games.) Today my collection spans a wide variety of platforms including the SEGA Genesis, all three Playstations, Gameboy Advance and origional Gameboy, and the PSP. I'm a Sony fan at heart, because I appreciate the attention they give to hardcore gamers, and I also appreciate them making a console that doesn't fail on you (THREE TIMES!) However, I don't blindly worship the ground Sony walks on, so don't call me a fanboy. My favorite game series' of all time are the Metal Gear franchise, any Star Wars games, the Grand Theft Auto franchise, and the Diablo games (A.K.A. the only thing I did throughout all of middle school.) I do have a fondness for other video game franchises, but those are my big favorites. I pretty much have an issue where theres too many games I want to play, and its impossible for me to get to all of them, and that upsets me.

Since yesterday I've been doing something.. something I wish I weren't. What is this thing you ask? Try to play even a tiny bit of Fallout 3. I want so badly to play this game, as I have heard nothing but good things about it. I got the PC version, because it just feels better to me to be playing roleplaying games on the PC. I have had a crash to desktop every single time I try to start a new game. I can watch the opening cinematic just fine, when that ends, CTD. I even got to play the entire tutorial, then when I went to leave the vault, CTD. Every. Time. I only got to play the tutorial after using process-of-elimination to turn off certain graphics options (eventually just for-going shadows all together), and even this didn't stop the crashes, now would I have been pleased if it had, because I have no problems graphically with ANY other game I play, and shouldnt have to disable shadows entirely to be able to play.
I wish it worked, this game looks spectaculatr.

Sad,

Snake

PS: anyone who suggests anything they have read anywhere regarding ffdshow, I do not have the codec, cant find it anywhere on my system, so that isn't the problem.

This post relates to: Rock Band 2, WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2009, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, Dead Space

I'm a huge baby when it comes to horror games. I'm not talking Half-life, which happens to hold a special place in my heart, I'm talking horror games. I just wanted to get that out of the way up front. So when all my buddies at GameStop told me how awesome Dead Space was, I repeatedly told them that I would have no part of it. But I could not resist for long, I caved. And I have to admit, I'm loving every minute of it.
He won't stop until he has no other choice.

Dead Space is a perfect survival/horror game. It does everything that the genre needs to do right. In order for a game of this type to fully immerse you, it needs to rid itself of all of the pieces that remind players that they are in fact, playing a game. This includes the HUD, menus, loading screens, BAD voice acting, etcetera. Guess what? Dead Space has none of that, other wise why would I bother writing the previous sentence. This is a prime example of storytelling done through gameplay (as opposed to cinematics and narrations) done right. The game also manages to remain incredibly authentic to the story it's trying to tell. It should only make sense that an engineer would use tools instead of military grade weapons to fight his enemies right? Which is why the games "strategic dismemberment system" makes so much sense for this game. It's not just another gimmick thought up by the dudes at EA, its an actual effective and completely fresh way of dispatching your foes. Instead of taking a shot to the head and calling it quits like 99.99% of shooter enemies do, the necromorphs in Dead Space are relentless. They will not stop coming untill you have dismembered them to the point that their bodies cannot possibly continue onward. Enemies cut off at the legs will crawl towards you, enemies cut off at the head will blindly stagger in your direction, flailing wildly in hopes of catching you in their grasps. It makes for really frentic gameplay that fits perfectly with the mood and atmosphere of the genre. Instead of relying on the traditional "tight corridors with enemies hiding behind the corner ready to jump out right in your face" technique, Dead Space WANTS you to know your enemies are coming, and that they will not stop untill they have no other choice.

I'm only just through the first chapter, but I can tell that this will be a wild ride. There have been plenty of "OH SHIT" moments, and a couple "OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT" moments. A veteran gamer like me wasn't fooled by the ole playing dead trick, but still, neato. All in all, I highly recommend Dead Space, if it isn't a contender for game of the year, it would by a wide margin win best atmosphere of the year, were it a real award.

I hate October. And It hates my wallet. I have only scraped the tip of the iceberg, and there are many more holiday titles for me to play. I am having a hard time choosing what I want to buy now, and what I want to wait untill X-mas for. I know for sure I am getting Fallout 3 and LittleBigPlanet on thursday, and Resistance 2 when it comes out. The other games I'm still debating on date of purchase (not playing, I'm definitely playing all of the following) are: Smackdown vs. Raw 2009, Midnight Club: LA, Spider-man: Web of Shadows (which I'm not so sure about anymore...), Rock Band 2, a Nintendo DS, and probablly some others I am forgetting.

By the way, Far Cry 2? Still amazing. <3 <3 <3...

Later dudes,

This post relates to: Grand Theft Auto IV, Saints Row 2, Far Cry 2

Sup guys, hope you don't mind me blogging here.
Watch yourself, or you could find yourself trapped in between your enemies and an in-escapable wall of flames.

So I dropped out of school for now. I just did. Meh. My two jobs will suffice untill I actually figure out where this life is going.

Far Cry 2 as I said, is spectacular. The game sticks SO well to its source material (that being Africa/conflict in Africa.) It also helps that this is the only game I can even recall EVER being set in Africa. The combination of the unique setting and the unrelenting faithfulness to it make for a INCREDIBLY unique and unforgettable experience. If you are unaware of the present situation in Africa, you should pay more attention to the events of this world. Basically, Africa is a continent (not a nation) engulfed in never ending conflict, wide-spread illness, and a mix of over-population and famine. Far Cry 2 manages to capture the feeling of this in very simple, but easily recognizable ways. The game gives you a great first impression in the form of a (sort-of) interactive cab ride to your hotel in the town of Palo (think the car ride prior to the execution of Yasir Al-Fulani in Call of Duty 4.) You get to see alot of what is to come, including corrupt local militia, the ever-present danger of brush fire, and lack of a division between civilization and wild-life. I was also impressed by little things like diamonds being used as currency, weapons that jam and are unreliable, and the WIDE variety of terrain (swampy marshes, deserts, jungles, villiages, cities.) The gameplay feels REALLY tight. The shooting is spot on, feels deadly, and is as effective as it should be. The way that the game displays the player actually doing EVERY action makes it so there is no point in the game where you are EVER taken out of the experience. For example, instead of teleporting from one seat in a vehicle to the next, you will see the character's arms actually reach up behind him, grab the roll bar, and pull himself into the gunner's position. Far Cry 2 also does a really good job with its mission structure. When it says you can play the mission in any way you want, you can actually play the mission in any. Way. You. Want. Lets just leave it at that, as I feel I'm getting a little carried away.

I also am REALLY enjoying Saints Row 2. Thank you Volition, for keeping the spirit of Grand Theft Auto alive and atoning for the sins of that virtual crime drama simulator realeased in back in April.

Hoo-ray! Previously mentioned virtual crime drama simulator is getting a trophies update! Now I actually feel like going back to play it! Maybe I'll finish it this time..

Well, thats all I got in me for now, I am not feeling well. I have a headache and maybe a fever. Take it easy chaps.

The Star Wars game we have been waiting for?

Ever since I first heard word of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, the Star Wars geek inside me could not help but be over-the-top excited for what looked to be the best Star Wars game in a very, very, long time. And overall, it does not dissapoint. There are weaknesses, but those weaknesses are not so overbearing that they detract from the overall experience. Any Star Wars fan will love everything about this game. So if you fall into that category, there is no reason to read any further. Anyone who can appreciate a good story, will also love this game. However, anyone coming into TFU looking for a great action experience may end up a little dissapointed.
The story takes place between Revenge of the Sith (Episode III) and A New Hope (Episode IV, or for the elders, Star Wars), and follows the story of Darth Vader's secret apprentice Galen Marek, referred to in game as Starkiller. Starkiller is tasked with the extermination of the remaining Jedi following the execution of Order 66 (for those of you who are less informed on the events of Star Wars, Order 66 was the secret plan that when enacted, would order all clones to kill their Jedi leaders.) Along for the ride are Proxy, a droid with an odd sense of dedication to his master, and Juno, an experienced Imperial pilot tasked with ferrying Starkiller to and from his objectives.
The Force Unleashed is a great looking game. It shines most during cinematics, where you are able to see the meticulous amount of detail that went into the facial animation for the main characters. Starkiller is voiced and modeled after the real-life actor Samuel Witwer, which results in a believable perfomance that is enjoyable and authentically Star Wars all the way through. The degree of quality in the enviroments can vary however, ranging from spectacular and stunning (Raxus Prime), to bland and boring (Felusia). However, the degree of interaction with your enviroments is enhanced like no other game to come before it, thanks to the combined power of the Euphoria engine (which can also be seen in Grand Theft Auto IV) and, premiering for the first time in TFU, Digital Molecular Matter. For those of you who don't know, DMM is an engine designed to replicate the real-world behaviour of various materials inside of video games. In other words, wood splinters, metal bends and warps, glass shatters, and so on. I felt that DMM wasn't used as well or as often as it was first said to, and when it was used, I felt that the same action could just have easily been animated; and even sometimes felt myself speculating as much.
Being a Star Wars game, one has to expect amazing sound quality, and TFU does not fail to deliver. All of the voice acting from the main cast is spectacular, aiding the game's movie-like feel. All of the music is standard to the franchise, the usual orchestra pieces along with the excellent title-specific theme.
The gameplay it-self is where TFU starts to falter. Marred by a lack-luster camera and targeting system, that chooses for itself which enemy, object, or switch you are targeting (most times doing a poor job). However, after some time with the game, the player will warm up to the system, begin to understand how it works, and even how they must play to get around it; such as using more area-of-effect moves like force push and lightning, and reacting quickly with whatever you happen to pick up instead of trying to target something specific. While not a perfect way to play, it works. The one area I found most satisfying was the boss battles. They each require specific strategies and inteligent use of available force powers to succeed; and they all end spectacularly, leaving you feeling immensely satisfied.
Gamers farmiliar with the God of War franchise will feel right at home with The Force unleashed. The upgrade screen fuctions very similarly to the one in GoW, with the player spending points in different areas to upgrade whichever skills they choose. The game also features timed button presses during interactive cinematics, during sequences where the player would be unable to excute such actions with the in-game controls.
Overall, The Force Unleashed DOES satisfy. All of the die-hard Star Wars fans will love this game. However, this is not the next KOTOR. If you are looking for a game with cinema-quality story-telling, moments that make you feel completely and totally unstoppable, and a fun combat system despite its flaws; then I urge you to give The Force Unleashed a try.

God of War 2 is the best possible send-off imaginable for the PS2

Overview
God of War 2, simply put, is the perfect way to send off the PS2 before we begin the next-generation of gaming. It provides an excellent story coupled with easy-to-learn and fun-to-use controls all put together in a stunning cinematic experience that truly show-cases how perfect action-adventure games are made.

Story
The Story in God of War 2 immediately picks-up where the last one left off. If you don't know where the last one left off than I suggest you go find out because like the sequel, the original God of War is a must-own for PlayStation 2 gamers. The player finds Kratos using his godly powers to assist the Spartan army in conquering all of Greece. The other gods begin to fear that Kratos is becoming too ambitious and will soon pose a threat to Olympus itself. Not willing to stand-by any longer, Zeus takes it upon himself to relieve Kratos of his godly powers and his life. The story picks up from here, with Kratos on a quest for revenge. A quest that will ultimately shake the very foundation of Olympus itself.
5/5

Gameplay
The gameplay in God of War 2 can be described as "just button-mashing" and sure, you could very well get through the entire game just mashing buttons. However, the game does have a wide array of different combos that if used correctly and efficiently pretty much make Kratos unstoppable. The combat over-all is pretty satisfying to use. Most creatures and all bosses have certain finishing sequences where the player must press buttons as they appear on screen in order to finish off the enemy. These sequences showcase the series' trademark brutality, and most finish off in a spectacular, gory mess.

Reviewer's Tilt
Having loved the first God of War, of course I had high expectations for the second. With it not only meeting but exceeding the expectations I had, I naturally loved the game. I must urge you; Do not miss out on this game.

Probablly the best example of a good game that noone played.

Psi-Ops is a game where you control a character with latent psychic abilities including the power to lift, throw, scout areas ahead of him, set people and objects ablaze, and control the actions of other people; all with his mind. This game went largely unnoticed maybe due to poor advertising. The controls are ultra tight, the psi powers control like a dream and the weapons are very easy and satisfying to use, especially when used in combination with the psychic powers. One of the games finest moments is the first time you use telekinesis to lift a confused soldier into the air and then blast away with a sub machine gun into his helpless body.

However, the story in Psi-Ops while not terrible doesn't seem up to par with most of the other well know shooting games on the market. It relies heavily on flashbacks and amnesia to account for the training and tutorials in the game. Personally, I feel this is a great way to introduce players to new gameplay mechanics because I was getting a little sick and tired of controlling rookie soldiers who all of a sudden become unstoppable war heroes.

It is a shame that this game didn't get the attention it deserved, because it offers one of the best experiences of the last-generation of gaming. I recommend this game VERY highly because it is an excellent and memorable experience.
