Game of the Year 2010 Honorable Mentions

List items

  • A 60fps, side-scrolling Kirby game in 2010? I'm pretty amazed this was made and that it was as crazy and imaginative as it is. While it's certainly an easy game, it's a joy to play.

  • This game is nuts. The story and presentation are insane. Pure Japanese insanity. The gameplay - helmed by Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kayami - is brilliant. In my opinion this game is at the top of all character driven action games (the genre that Devil May Cry created). It perfectly sits between Devil May Cry's insane skill based, minute-button presses and God of War's easy to pull off, over-the-top combos.

  • It's ironic to me that Criterion created a throwback Burnout game using the the Need for Speed franchise. Between the lowest button lag of any game ever tested (see Eurogamer.com), the gorgeous visuals and the brilliant asynchronous multiplayer (using Autolog), this is a real standout game.

  • While I don't feel like this sequel took the franchise further in regards to pure gameplay; the visual style coupled with the satisfying combat made for a real joy to experience. Some of their visual set pieces are the best in the industry.

  • I love electronic music. I love DJ Hero. But I didn't feel like the pop music mash-up soundtrack in DJ Hero 1 did the game justice (pun intended to the few who will get that). DJ Hero 2 combines the soundtrack that the first game deserved with additional gameplay mechanics which make me feel more like a fake DJ.

  • This is a game that could not exist pre-Kinect. It's not Dance Dance Revolution. It is a real dance game. And it's a lot of fun.

  • This is probably my favorite Kinect game. While it contains many of the games you'd expect in Wii Sports, it is able to enforce far more choreographed motions and rewards intrinsic skill in knowing how to bowl, or being able to jump higher than everyone else. While it might have been cliche, I kind of wish this would have been the pack-in for Kinect.

  • I don't like iPhone games. I don't like them because - much like the PSP - developers seem to want to make console games with mechanics that aren't intuitive on a touch screen. This year there have been a few games that "got it". And Game Dev Story is my favorite. Certainly I'm biased, but this is a really fun game that pokes fun - in the right places - at game development. It's a bit biased with a Japanese perspective, but it's a blast and very addictive. This was the first iPhone game (or mobile game for that matter) that I've ever completed. And I still play it.

  • Sony 1st Party takes risks. And I must applaud them for publishing this game. While it's storytelling and presentation is bested by a few other games, it is a game that needs to be experienced. And to all those who say "the adventure genre is dead", I give you Heavy Rain.
