Snider web work circa 1999

If you've read my site bio you know that before I started building sites professionally I made them for fun for the various quake clans I was in. Recently I was trying to find my Vietcong play discs and came across an old dusty CD tittled "Snider, web + art". I give you, dear readers, some of the contents from that disc. As you know I'm pretty supportive of anyone trying to learn how to make the web a profession and I hope this truly amateur work from my early days inspire any young nerds out there to stick with their work, because you eventually do get better.

Also, holy shit. Look at that fucking poser tough guy image!

Whatever man. I'll kick your ass! I'm wearing a wife beater. Don't mess with me!

What?  Where's all the Photoshop lens flare and emboss?  You call this 90's web design!?

Posted by JoelTGM

the web designer who will also kick your ass?

Posted by benjaebe

That's one badass pose. Consider me impressed.

Posted by AjayRaz

really cool stuff. also, is that last image a website of it's own?

Posted by JTHomeslice

Those look better than half the shitty websites from the 90's.

Nice

Nice work! Better than what I could do anyway. Especially that last one. I may have you beat in facial hair, but I'm also pretty flabby.

But it's always fun to look over old stuff from back in the day. I remember '99 like it was only 11 years ago...

That last image must be become a meme.  IT MUST

Oh man. Whiskey Media officially has the internets most authentic web designer.

Posted by snide

Also, I'm pretty sure at one point The Borg Collective was ranked #2 in the OGL for Rocket Arena 2. We were actually really really good.

 @snide:
Woah Dave dude, last picture! The suspect is considered armed and extremely dangerous!

What were you looking for your Vietcong discs for, anything to do with Black Ops? All i remember from that game is liking the soundtrack

Posted by Megasoum

Nothing says 1999 like a Matrix themed website! haha Awesome Dave

Posted by TaliciaDragonsong

We've all gotta start somewhere innit?
It does aspiring artists and the like good to see that sometimes even the gods had to work to get to their positions, makes it that little more obtainable.

I love the wife beater pic

I love the light blue and pink windows theme you had going on.

Maybe in retrospect 90s web design has gotten worse for me, but this stuff looks pretty damn good by 90s standards

Posted by Ratcabbage

Borg Collective belongs in a museum.

=/ I read this as "spider web work"

Online
Posted by bucky

realest web designer alive.
still, pretty good, especially considering how much the tools must have sucked back then.

1999 Dave scares me :(

Posted by snide

Pretty sure the song playing on winamp is Motion Picture Soundtrack. I was a big Radiohead fan back in the day.

@DanielJW:  NO ONE is more legit than Dave, NO ONE
Posted by Sharpless

Wow. Oh. Oh, wow. Dave used to be one of those guys that I can't stand. One of those wife beater guys. And what more, a short-hair, goatee wife beater guy.

You've come a long way, baby.

@snide: You were ripped!

I wonder what BiffMcBlumpkin will have to say when he sees that last image :P

Obviously the quality of your work has improved since 1999, but has the methodology on how you go about it changed much?

I always knew you were a poser.

Looks like a gang member. I can totally see a swastika tattoo'd on the back of his head in that image.
Posted by MetalGearSunny

Snide will kick my ass any day.

Posted by SlightConfuse

at least you were consistant in your design and some of thoses look good

Posted by FlyingRat

I honestly thought you had photoshopped your head onto somebody else's body when i first saw the last image.

Posted by nick_verissimo

I think the craziest thing is that in 1999 the matrix still meant something!

where's the ketchup stain? nothing is as authentic as a ketchup stain on a wifebeater shirt.
Posted by Hadoken101

I like how all the pictures that show the toolbar were taken around 5-6 in the morning. Thus proving that the internet is best made at ungodly hours. Also, the 90's; when wifebeaters were a sign of badassness and not redneckedness.

@snide:  Snide how old were you in that image? If you don't mind sharing?

1999 Dave still had tons of pimples and was a complete nerd. Very obviously a picture taken with a timer in the loneliness of one's crappy apartment to look tough! This was the embarrassing point of one's late adolescence where you'd collect empty bottles of booze you'd recently drank to show how much culture you had.
Posted by Driadon

1999 Dave don't take no shit from nobody....in Rocket Arena 2.
Good stuff, though. You were on those web standards more so then most designers, much less an amateur one.

@snide: Snide, I mean this with all love and respect...

...you looked like you were ready to go out back and train pitbulls to be fight dogs while listening to Eminem.  LOL  Don't worry.  Back in 1999, I looked like a skinny Ethiopian that smoked too much pot and watched The Crow a few too many times.  OH THE PAST!!!

The web design stuff ain't bad, especially for that time frame.  What were you using, just HTML?  I tried HTML once.  I quit when I made this abomination.  I can't believe the fucker is still up.  Hey, like I said...I watched The Crow a few too many times!!!  Also, yes...that says "webrings" on there!  WEBRINGS, DAVE!!!

So when are the Whiskey sites adopting these layouts?

Posted by Avarix
@snide You haven't aged any in 10 years
Posted by snide
@jakob187: I was mostly using Dreamweaver so that I could build awesome nested table layouts. Almost all of these sites had awesome flash intros.
Posted by MisterMouse

my favorite is the picture of snide.

Posted by ZombiePie

I feel like some of those sites should have advertisements saying that I'm the 3 millionth user to visit their site and need to provide my credit card number to get a fantastic award.

@snide: Nested tables?! Well, at least those should be beyond the age of iframes.
Posted by jorbear
@DOUBLESHOCK: You gotta watch out for them. They can get pwn you online and in real life.
