GOTY 2012

List items

  • XCOM flew under my radar for a long time. With the multiple games announced and production troubles for the FPS, i wasn't really expecting much from this one. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. XCOM takes the micro management of resources and pairs with the tactical combat of a game like Fire Emblem. The result is an amazing game that warrants multiple play throughs. I can't wait to dive back into this one again.

  • Historically I haven't been a fan of the works of TellTale. The Walking Dead is different though. By taking an already great universe and putting on a TellTale spin, a great game was made. Walking Dead manages to make you care about characters in a way most games don't manage to. I'll be honest Episode 5 destroyed me in a way no game has every been capable of doing.

  • I loved the first Borderlands, I couldn't wait to journey back to Pandora. While BL2 may not be revolutionary it was still more Borderlands, which I am completely okay with.

  • Despite the game's narrative short comings, ME3 was still a great game. It finished Shepard's story and made me eager to revisit the Mass Effect universe. The multiplayer was surprisingly fun as well.

  • I loved Persona 4 on the PS2. It has been several years since I played it, so the opportunity to visit P4 again was welcome. The new additions are welcome, and improve the game greatly. Plus this is probably the only game that is keeping me from regretting buying my VITA.

  • FTL is the only KickStarter game I've gotten to play so far. If half of them are as good as FTL, we may be on to something here.

  • Gods and Kings adds a few new mechanics to an already wonderful game. While the new features may not be revolutionary, they were enough to make sink another several dozen hours into CIV V.

  • The XBLA release of Minecraft was my first experience with the game. I sunk many hours into Minecraft and have since upgraded to the PC version.

  • I've wanted to play this game for a couple of years now, but my PC could never run it. It was everything I'd hoped for. A great Western RPG with a fascinating story. Can't wait to see what CD Projekt Red Comes up with next.

  • Yes, I know Skyrim came out in 2011, but I kept playing it well into 2012. Between the game's long run time and the two major DLC expansions to come out in 2012 my list would be incomplete without one of the games I played the most.
