Runners Up or Honorable Mentions of 2010

These are games that I considered for my top 10 of 2010 list but didn't quite make the cut.  Or in one case a game I didn't actually play but recognized the quality.

List items

  • My first time dipping my toes back into a racing game in years. I really had a blast with this but after a while I just stopped playing it. Not that I stopped enjoying it, I just never put it back in my 360. However, it rekindled my desire for racing and for that I thank Blur.

  • I couldn't include this simply because I haven't played very much of it. I was late to the party with Mario Galaxy and ended up playing 1 and 2 back to back. Two was very much the same game which is by no means a knock on the game but I wasn't quite ready for more just yet. Then I never went back. I should get back to it soon I think, I do need a plumber.

  • I played the hell out of this for a weekend. Then sort of poked at it for another few days. Then never touched it again. I personally preferred the slow/methodical pace of older Splinter Cell games though I appreciated what this had to offer. For the most part I could play this in an old school manner but still had the option to 'go loud' when I felt like it (without Lambert in my ear telling me the mission was over). Some great multiplayer stuff too, but not enough to stay in rotation.

  • Roaming around the world was top notch. Few games provide me the experience this game offered. With the mechanics in place I could get literally anywhere I wanted and do it in style. However the actual game part of it was repetitive and often pretty boring.

  • Completely un-ironic pick here. Yes, this game is terrible. However, it has a certain charm to it. Of course, I'm the guy that actually kind of likes the smell of skunk (so long as it isn't on me). The game is crazy. Simply crazy. There is honestly no part of this game that completely makes sense and for that I do love it.

  • Great style that went a long way for me. Sure it wasn't much more than a button mashy side scrolling beat 'em up. But damn it if it wasn't fun as hell.

  • Far from perfect but had some interesting mechanics that I enjoyed messing around with. I would like to see what a second game in this franchise could do. Also, due to a promotion with this game I got Prototype for free, so that was cool.

  • I loved Crackdown. Simply adored it and still play it about once a month or so. At this point it is just a game to jump in and screw around for a bit when I've got a few extra minutes to kill. And that was exactly the problem. Crackdown 2 is Crackdown. There are some new elements but there is very little reason for me to put in Crackdown 2 when I could play Crackdown directly from my hard drive (I have the physical game but through a series of unfortunate events I ended up getting the games on demand version too... which turned out okay in the end anyway).

  • I wanted to love this game. I wanted it to be on my top 10 games of 2010. I sure played a lot of it and even called in sick to work to play it (which I haven't done since GTA Vice City came out). However, I can't quite get this onto my top 10. I didn't have any particular problems with the game it just didn't grab hold of me nearly as well as the first Dead Rising did.

  • Not enough game here to get it into my top 10. This isn't a length versus cost issue or anything, it just had little to no re-playability for me. I experienced what it had to offer and then after that it was just a way to kill some zombies. I still had Dead Rising for that if I wanted it and that would provide more variety. However, this was a great primer for Dead Rising 2.

  • I totally missed the God of War boat by years. I didn't play any of them until this was nearly released. I picked up the God of War collection and played through 1 and 2 very quickly and then shortly after played 3. Even after playing 3 of these games in quick succession I still really enjoyed this game. However, it just wasn't quite enough to sneak into the top 10.

  • I have only played the demo of this but from that alone and what footage I have seen I feel like this is a really solid title. It is the only Kinect game other than Dance Central that I have any desire to play at all. However, not having actually played it I couldn't consider it.
