Are you ready for micro-transactions in Gran Turismo 6? Well Sony is!

This is the Puente Nuevo, or New Bridge, and that is a Ferrari. New meets...old?
This is the Puente Nuevo, or New Bridge, and that is a Ferrari. New meets...old?

Sony announced that Gran Turismo 6 will have micro-transactions. They did not give any information about how much these credits would cost in dollars or I guess I should say euros, since the announcement was made on the European PlayStation.Blog. This is what Sony had to say about the credits,

(F)rom launch at retail you’ll find a new option for building your ultimate fantasy car collection in-game credits will be purchasable through PS Store or your friendly local retailer at the following denominations: 500K, 1 million, 2.5 million or 7 million credits which you’ll be able to apply in-game for cars and parts. To know how much your credits will get you, take a look at the menu of choices. For 1 million credits you could get all the cars below.

No Caption Provided

Nobody is surprised that Sony is moving in this direction, especially considering how much money Forza makes on DLC and how well iRacing.com has been doing recently. Sony has been talking about doing this for years, so this shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody that they finally dropped the hammer. The real surprise will be whether GT players will fall into the DLC trap that catches so many of us with one game or another. We will all have to wait with bated breath to see how much they will be charging for these credits, and if their player base is willing to pay what they are asking. (Especially, when we keep in mind Patrick's great article about Skullgirls DLC.)

Along with this announcement, Sony announced that Gran Turismo 6 Standard Edition and Special Edition are available for pre-order on PSN. In the bulky Special Edition, you’ll get the full GT6 Game, 20 extra cars (Torque, Performance, Adrenaline and Velocity packs), custom PSN avatars, paint chips, race suits and race helmets. If you do choose to pre-order the game on PSN you will get the cars included in the Precision Pack for free as well.

These cars are:

  • GT-R NISMO GT3 15th Anniversary Edition
  • R8 LMS ultra 15th Anniversary Edition
  • Corvette Stingray (C7) 15th Anniversary Edition
  • Model S Signature Performance 15th Anniversary Edition
  • Viper GTS 15th Anniversary Edition
Precision Pack
Precision Pack

20 extra cars seems like a lot of cars, plus the five in the precision pack. This almost seems like it might be a season pass in disguise. If Sony is giving away 25 free cars for Special Edition purchasers, then it might be a little premature for people to freak out about their DLC plans.

I am pretty excited for Gran Turismo 6. I spent a good amount of time playing Gran Turismo 5. GT5 was a great game, but it did have some glaring flaws. I think, in the end, the amount of time that the game spent in development compared with the overall quality of the game leads me to believe that the game was probably an overall failure for Sony. Hopefully, GT6 will be a step back in the right direction for the GT series.

Nope. Won't play a game with micro transactions. Period.

buy this game used or don't buy it at all. Make sure to tell Polyphony that they're being gross on Twitter.

how is this gross? The way it is used in GT6 is as an option. You can not even buy Credits in the game itself but only in the store. The progression is as good as GT5 or some say even better in terms of earning money cars etc. I can totally understand if a game is build around these microtransactions but that is not what GT6 is.

I think it's gross that it's an option. Microtransactions, in my opinion shouldn't be in retail games period. People are stupid if they utilize this "option". That's how I feel. Maybe that's not the most balanced stance to have but I think it's the most effective. I don't want to have to look at the ethical balance of progression and revenue for a video game. Maybe you're right and the $100 cars are actually very unintrusive and tame compared to Forza or whatever other game but I'm not going to give it the time of day honestly. I will not buy this game.

Microtransactions belong in F2P games and only F2P games.

But you have, which really voids your opinion on the subject.

Simple. If it's optional, great. If not, then we have a problem. I say this in general across all games that charge you for a full price up front. There is a difference between F2P and $60 plus micro. Ive been playing Ryse multiplayer. It's a lot like Mass Effect 3 in terms of the micro transactions part. You get gold each match, spend it on packs of random stuff. Or you fast track and pay for gold and then still use it to unlock packs of random stuff. This is fine for me. Something like this isn't gross. It's there for those who want it but it isn't required. Let's hope GT6 gets this right.

I see this generation, at lest in the first couple years, a lot of experimenting. Games figuring out what works and what doesn't.

Ultimately, gamers are the deciding factor. You and your money. If you feel it's done right and want to support it, spend it. If not, put the wallet away.

I'm gonna repeat the same thing I have said before. GT can be a grind. They have added a way for people to get around that if they choose.

I personally like the grind of the early game in the GT series.

What PD is doing now seems more like a paid money cheat, which is fine. I remember using gameshark on GT3 to get tons of money and just buy every car.

Also I should say that these are just my assumptions and opinions as I don't have the game yet but I haven't seen much outrage on the GTplanet forums and I have watched a bunch of videos and money gain seems the same as every GT.

If it doesn't affect the progression of the game, which has been indicated as being the case for GT6, I couldn't give less of a shit. You're being ridiculous if you do.

@spraynardtatum: Fair enough but as far as we know there is not even a way to buy these in the game itself nor does it encourage it. The onyl way you can buy this stuff is in the PSN store. I think it is totally fine that way. But I guess that is a matter of taste and acceptance.

As long as the game doesn't make me go through two screens suggesting I buy a coin/XP doubler before a race like Forza 5 I'm okay with it. At least for now. I grinded my way through the previous games, I'll grind my way through this one.

What bugs me about microtransactions is not that someone might unlock cars without winning races, but that if "normal" becomes owning a coin doubler (as the Forza 5 VIP and limited editions have) then they will alter the game to take twice as long if you don't spend more than $60 on the game.

Anyway, the proof is in the pudding. I'll have to see how this game goes before I buy it. I'll be playing Grid 2 and AC4 for a while anyway.

I am really amazed by how many people in the Giantbomb community are completely against micro-transactions. I know it is a skewed group, but I guess I just didn't expect so many people to be against micro-transactions in any form at all.

yeah its kind of a snap reaction for alot of people. Straight up jumping to boycott a game because it had micro-transactions without even knowing how they're implemented.

Honestly I expect most of them are either tight on money or too young to have a credit card. From what I've read GT6 has the same progression as the other games in the series. I mean since GT1 the high end cars have been super expensive... there's now a shortcut you can take or ignore. Forza 5 sounds like they fucked the core progression for money, GT6 sounds like you can buy what you want or not.

I don't buy cosmetic junk or in-game cash on full price games. But I've bought bux or whatever in a few free-to-play games. Hell I spent $5 on cash in Tiny Tower but feel like I got way more than $5 worth of fun from that game. You can only rip yourself off in the end...

I'm assuming that they probably are similar to myself in that they don't mind microtransactions in f2p games (I've bought cosmetics and stuff in DotA, and spent money in a couple other f2p games), but find it out of place or unnecessary in full price retail games. It just seems you should get everything when you pay full price already, though it seems what GT is doing is probably fine. But I will admit that I'm pretty old fashioned since I'm still not totally fond of DLC either.
