This game was great at the time, but I think the combat system definitely does not hold up. I wouldn't blame them for dumping it just because playing through the combat is a huge slog. Vinny is right that this is directly based off of 3rd edition D&D, which means that you can kinda screw up your character build a little more easily than in Mass Effect.
Definitely retreat into already explored areas. I treat these kind of games almost like a stealth game.
I've never played the original Rogue, but I played Nethack quite a bit, and after that, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. This seems quite bare in terms of features, but you would expect that from its age.
