E3 2011 Most Anticipated Games

SpaceGandhi: E3 2011 Most Anticipated Games

Games I'm pumped for, but they're just too damn close to release to put on this list: Bastion and Trenched

List items

  • Going into E3 this year I could have cared less about Skyrim, and that's exactly why its my game of the show. No other game this E3 won me over like Skyrim did. A new engine with potentially outstanding character AI seems to right the clunky combat of previous Elder Scrolls games, while the streamlined skill system makes the formerly daunting prospect of playing a character for 50 hours, only to then realize that you've done a terrible job of specing them, much less likely.

  • Aiming to surpass the lofty heights reached by the original Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite looks to do just that. With another amazing world to explore and characters to discover, Irrational Games looks like it has another masterpiece on its hands.

  • While Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 3 look to be fantastic sequels, Batman: Arkham City looks like it's making more ambitious changes to the scope of its world and gameplay. Exploring the expanded Arkham City while performing stealth takedowns and Free-Flow combat will most likely be one of the best experiences of the year.

  • Late entry Edit: I completely wrote off Prey 2 after immediately relating it to its poor predecessor. But Prey 2 seems to be a fantastically different game set in the larger Prey universe, which is represented by the game's open-world. I hope this game is as awesome as it seems!

  • I'll admit it's a little wrong of me to place The Old Republic so high on my list when I would honestly call it my biggest disappointment of the show, but all I really need from this game is a release date and Bioware failed to give me that. Regardless, I'll still be there on day one, ready to begin my adventure in a galaxy far, far away.

  • The inevitably epic conclusion to the story of Commander Shepard, Mass Effect 3 suffers from the same "just give it to us" syndrome that Uncharted 3 does. Kinect support is interesting, if only for the fact that now when I whisper "I love you," to Thane the game might respond to it.

  • As much as I loved the previous Uncharted games, and I'm looking forward to the series first portable outing, Uncharted 3 feels like such a known quantity at this point its difficult to get any more excited for it than I was a year ago. It'll be great, but will it surprise us by being something more than we expect?

  • While little new footage was shown at E3, Twisted Pixel managed to send out Splosion Beta invites the week of the conference which I was luckily accepted in to. Ms. Splosion Man looks to be a bigger, better version of its progenitor, which is enough to earn my purchase.

  • AC: Brotherhood was one of the best games of last year and AC: Revelations looks to continue the tradition of incredibly satisfying gameplay and narrative we have come to expect from the series post-AC2. My excitement is somewhat diminished though by the fact that this game still runs on the AC2 engine.

  • Over the past few years my interest in shooters, particularly one that focus heavily on online multiplayer, has waned heavily. That being said Battlefield 3's gorgeous Frostbite 2 technology and its potential to recapture the big battle glory of its predecessor has my attention.

  • While this game doesn't really make me anymore excited for the PSVita than I would be naturally, the promise of a new Nathan Drake adventure still rouses my interest.

  • The only Kinect-only title that I'm genuinely interested in, Twisted Pixel's The Gunstringer looks like it will implement the developer's trademark humor with marionette-driven platforming and shooting.

  • Randy Pitchford saved the miserable tone of the Ubisoft conference with this surprise announcement. The stylized characters and humorous slant on the vicious killing of Nazis immediately drew comparisons to Inglourious Basterds. While no gameplay footage was shown, and it continues to puzzle me why Nazis can be called "Nazis" but can't have Swastikas on their armbands, this could be the game to make WWII an interesting setting for games again.

  • As someone who didn't enjoy a Tomb Raider game until last year's Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, this reboot of the series has me interested in its survival-based gameplay instead of the series more traditional third-person shooter roots.

  • My favorite Metal Gear gets the 3DS remake treatment. The massive game will be printed on special 4 gigabyte 3DS carts that will be made especially for it. No new features or modes were announced though, which would give additional incentive for purchasing this Kojima classic.
