So for the people who apparently depend on used games to fuel their gaming habits: what's your opinion on piracy? Because I can't honestly picture in my mind someone who says "I cannot afford this game for $60 new. However, if I can get it for $50 used, I will be able to budget for it." In my mind, someone either has money for games, or they don't. If they do, they can buy used games. If not, they can pirate, and the developer gets the exact same cut as if they had bought it used.

I'm not advocating piracy, but if there's a choice between playing a game without paying and playing a game after paying a retailer who contributed nothing to the development of said game, I personally feel like you'd be better off just downloading the damn game and saving your money to buy a different game new instead.

You're missing the other part of that equation. The "I cannot afford this game for $60 new. However, if I can get it for 20 dollars and four trade-in games, I will be able to afford it" part. You're also missing the "Wow, GameStop has some really good deals on used games this week. I picked up four older games for less than $35 total" part.

Piracy also doesn't support the local economy, while buying used games does.

I dont see why game developers seem to think they should be getting paid anything for used game.

If i buy a second hand car, ford dont get a cut of the money. why should game developers be any different.

You can not buy a car at release day for 10% less than the actualy retail price. Same goes for books and the movie industry for example even gets a cut from rentals.

I am lost as to what example you are trying make. No one pays sticker price for a car unless they don't know how to haggle. Movies are usually cheaper when you buy them on release day.

Movies have 3 or more different ways to make money.

1. Cinema

2. DVD/Bluray release

3. Netflix and co

4. normal rental.

Games have 1. Also note I would never say anything against the normal used game market but if you can buy the newest games at launch used for 5-$ less than the new one than there is something wrong here.

Original sales

limited editions

GOTY editions

pre-order bonuses

first-run bonuses

season passes

online passes

on-disc DLC

episodic / additional campaign DLC

weapons / vehicles / characters / equipment DLC

cosmetic DLC

real money to in-game currency purchases

paying for XP boosts

paying for early unlocks

paying for random unlocks

several rentals

in-game advertisements

and micro-transactions.

Did I miss anything?

Maybe I'm just a special case, but provided that what Microsoft has said about its used game approach (as opposed to Internet meanderings) is true, is it really that bad? I come from a camp that believes the developer should be able to make as much money as possible for the entertainment they make. They've been doing it forever on pc, why not consoles? But more importantly, if the advantage with used games is being able to buy titles at a discount, why not just wait for the game to go on sale? I bought Dishonored, brand new for the 360 two weeks ago for $12 on amazon. I have consistently found titles go on sale. So much in fact that I can't remember the last time I bought a used game. It's worked out for me extremely well. Why don't more people feel this way? You don't even make much money selling back to GameStop so why do people care?

This is my first post by the way. Asked the same question on NeoGaf and got banned. I don't understand that place. Hope things go better here.

More MS hate threads is exactly what this site needs.

...spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam...

grr grrrr microsoft grrr grr bler dah blah whine whine blarg grrr grrr M$ lol grr grrrrr 8balls grrr

Are you the kind of people who wouldn't even complain about someone beating you to near death or stealing your car, because complaining is not kewl?

And the dumbest analogy goes to....You!! Congratulations. Last time I checked we were talking about a video game console.

People who complain about consoles that they know almost nothing about yet are retarded, they are the same people who like to give games 0's on Metacritic because they added multiplayer.

"If Microsoft's anti-consumer polices turn out to be true..."

What part of the word "IF" do you not understand? This thread is speaking in terms of a hypothetical, and has been presented as such from post one.

Secondly, all I know about the Xbox One is what MS has told us, and what they've been awkwardly back peddling from ever since, without any sense of commitment or clarity.

this thing will sell. maybe not to you, but they'll move units. or perhaps i should rephrase: so long as the console market itself isn't dead, they'll have a pony in the race- at the very least for this generation. we're not going to have a dreamcast situation.

Oh, I agree. The thought is what will you miss if YOU decide to walk away. Microsoft isn't going anywhere, and I'm sure the Xbox One will at least be successful enough to keep them in business.

All this poll thread does is remind me why it doesn't matter what console you have- there's nothing particularly special about any of them. XBOX could disappear and I wouldn't really care.

Although, it would be kind of sad if Nintendo disappeared. They got spunk, and charm, and all that nostalgia.

I don't think Nintendo could ever disappear. The most they would ever do is go 3rd party. There will always be a market for what they do.

And personally, I would miss XBLA the most. Games like Shadow Complex, Trials Evolution, and Dust: An Elysian Tale have been fantastic this generation.

I don't see saying "If Microsoft's anti-consumer polices turn out to be true" as something that should be referred to as a "hate thread." I also don't see this as jumping the gun before E3, because, well...

"If Microsoft's anti-consumer polices turn out to be true"

[edit] To put it another way, I don't own a PS3, and play my 360 almost exclusively. This isn't a "Microsoft hate thread," it's a "anti-consumer hate thread."

@kerse said:

And its not the anti-consumer stuff that would drive me away, if the kinect becomes some integral part of using the Xbox One, that will be a deal breaker for me. They would be crazy to not have an option to just turn it off for everything, but who knows.

Actually, telling people "to use our product you are required to have a camera pointed at you at all times, which can recognize your face, see your heart beat, read your pulse, and requires a daily connection to the internet" seems very anti-consumer to me.

Do you remember how mad people got when George Lucas shat on the whole world by explaining that the force is made of midichlorians?

I think Microsoft should keep us in the dark as long as they can.

Yes, because explaining "Jedi Magic" is exactly the same thing as learning just how many of your rights are about to be violated by a massive corporation.

Thank you all for the massive support :) I honestly had no idea how it would do on Steam but it's been topping the chart for the last few days, and I have you all to thank!

Seeing as you're reading this thread, I wanted you to know that I was lucky enough to get a copy of the game for free on XBLA when you tweeted some codes on NeoGAF. Just wanted to say thank you for that. I ended up really enjoying the game, and I've recommended it to quite a few others as a result.

Who said this? Have a link? I'm not aware of Sony saying any such thing.
