Top Ten Most Visually Impressive Games of This Generation (a work in progress...)

  • Along with its sequel, Crysis Warhead, Crysis remains the top dog in terms of technical graphics and a testament to the power of high-end PCs. Though its visual style may be called "boring" by some, no one can deny the fact that to date, it still remains the pinnacle of technical achievement in video game graphics.

  • Uncharted 2 simply looks fantastic. Though it certainly isn't the sharpest looking game around, enough can't be said about just how fluid the game is in motion and how fantastic the lighting, particle, and blurs effects are not to mention the fantastic character animation.

  • Far Cry 2 impresses not only with it's huge open world filled with lush detail and superb lighting, but also its use of a dynamic weather system and perhaps the best implementation of fire propagation ever in a video game.

  • Not the most colorful game around but Killzone 2 impresses with its sheer detail, scope and atmosphere. It sells the concept of destroyed beauty handedly.

  • Metal Gear Solid 4 benefits from its impeccable character designs, impressive animation quality, and superb use of interactive cutscenes.

  • It's all about the details and Assassin's Creed has it in spades, especially in it's sprawling vistas, dense cityscapes, and crowed streets. No other games has faithfully modeled and brought to life real-world cities as accurately or with as much painstaking detail as AC2. Walking through the streets of Florence or Venice in AC2 completely transports you to another time and place.

  • The poster child for Unreal 3, Gears of War was undoubtedly one the best looking game of its time and showed us what Unreal 3 was capable of.

  • Resident Evil 5 has arguably some of the best and most detail character designs of this generation along with superb animation quality and dynamic lighting effects (especially in the PC version).

  • The world of Oblivion was not only huge but populated with a stunning display of flora. Indeed Oblivion is one of the first games to effectively utilize speedtree and its dynamic flora system. Add to that some fantastic HDR lighting and we have a winner.

  • Dirt 2 is definitely one of the best looking driving games of this generation but its also the first to utilize DirectX11 technology. Though the car models and look great, its the environmental details that puts Dirt over the top including some of the best looking water effects of any game ever.
