Playstation 3 FW 3.21 Frustration

With the recent update to FW 3.21 those that reserved space on their PS3s for OtherOS support had a multitude of questions, issues, and decisions to make.  Do I not upgrade my firmware and keep Linux, do I wait for the inevitable Custom Firmware that will be released, do I upgrade and lose that storage capacity reserved for OtherOS (in my case it's 28GB worth of space, no small amount), or do I go through the effort of having to buy external storage to perform a backup / format / restore of my PS3 to reclaim the space, but at a cost of whatever size USB drive I need to accomplish this (I believe 500GB USB drives go for 75-80 dollars).

In my case, I've used this dilemma to catch up on a bunch of 360 games I have, like finally finishing Mass Effect, get up to level 40 in Forza 3, and some other titles.  I wouldn't be so hesitant other than having to shell out the cash for the drive and spend a few hours backing it up, formatting, and restoring in hopes to reclaim the space.  It would have been a great goodwill gesture if Sony released a partition resizing utility to reclaim the space in conjunction with FW 3.21, but as it has come to light, this knee-jerk reaction of panic in fear of the PS3 devolving into what the PSP platform is today was the only thing on Sony's mind.

Anyone else here in the same situation?  Post what steps you've taken with regards to this issue, and thanks for reading!
