Killer MSX Games

Konami made some really killer games for the MSX in the 1980s. Many of them seem to have been forgotten, especially in the US where MSX never really took off.

List items

  • Early Metroidvania game, still holds up pretty well. Too bad I never actually owned the game myself. NES version is very different, though still pretty good in its own right.

  • The first game ever I bought immediately after it was released.

  • Probably my favourite game in the Gradius/Nemesis franchise, despite its faults. Using most of the stages twice is a bit dubious design decision. Stellar soundtrack, even if it was the first SCC game.

  • More like Salamander. If one of the Gradius games ever was worth its reputation in high difficulty it's this. At least two of the six levels are near impossible to finish if you die after the half-way checkpoint.

  • First game that Hideo Kojima worked on. It's not very complicated, but very well done and looks good considering the hardware limitations.
