The description makes it sound a lot worse than it actually is in the game. The director jelling cut immediately afterwords makes it pretty clear that neither the rape nor the killings are real.

It's still a disturbing scene of course, but Hotline Miami suppose to be a disturbing game.

Hah, yeah you're right. The game is getting banned over simulated-simulated sexual violence. Twice removed.

@tuxfool: I hear and appreciate your opinion.

I would ask whether you think that a slavish dedication to shocking content, specifically content that features persons with privilege victimizing the most vulnerable members of society, is really the appropriate tact in this situation? Do you feel as if it in some way acts as a power fantasy for players who share the protagonist's social identifiers, while at the same time intimidating the minority players who have experienced sexual violence? Would tolerating this game send the message that those people are not wanted in games?

I think your disconnect here is equating 'tolerance' with 'support'. Tolerating something says nothing about any ones support for anything.

Putting aside your ridiculous notion that players will be social identifiers with the protagonist, it's also not the authors responsibility to make anyone feel wanted, unwanted, or anything else. Their only 'job' is to sell games. Their only morality is the laws in the country they are marketing to. As far as I can see, the ratings board of Australia doesn't have the power to enforce legislation, let alone morality, so it seems they are overstepping their bounds by de-facto 'banning' the game.

Scene does make me uncomfortable - I'll probably avoid it. As an adult, that is my decision - the idea that a board would deem me unfit to make that decision for myself is insulting.

Good on you Calm Gamer. As a citizen of a 'free' country, that's your right. Just be glad that your parents can no longer tell you that PG13 movies are just too scary.

If you're an Australian on the other hand, it looks like you'll never have that freedom. I've said it before and I'll say it again: F Australia.

(Censored for the Australian ratings board)

I love the time period. Skipped unity (so far) but I'll give this a shot

@wrecks: I'm with you here. Somehow simulating loss, while I'm sure it will elicit an emotional response from just about anyone, it just doesn't sound fun. Hopefully they will inject some 'fun' somehow - gone home had a lot of neat stuff to discover and read, and to me, that was enough 'fun' for me.

Witch is already female so writing female witch just looks silly.

Actually, traditionally witch has been a gender-neutral term. In fact, plenty of men were burned at the stake for being witches. I'm not sure when the term began being applied almost exclusively to women, but I'm guessing Macbeth had a lot to do with it...

It's like most people assuming "duder" applies to men only. It's gender-neutral just like "witch."

I dunno man, Merriam-Webster states that witch is a gendered term: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/witch

Mushrooms are a game about synaesthesia for those who don't actually have synaesthesia.
