Games I beat in 2012

Deux dizzy

List items

  • This game did everything the original Trine did, but it is prettier and more fleshed out than it's predecessor: just the way a sequel should be. In the end I felt it was less punishing than the first one and therefore a lot easier, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable.

  • Fuck yea! A friend of mine got this from the Steam holiday giftpile and challenged me to beat it. I did it and I'm left speechless how anyone can release a cover-based third person shooter in 2011 that does everything wrong. It's clunky and it's story is the so dudebro it hurts my brain. There are maybe a total of three enemy models that you kill over and over again with the main characters babbling all the time how they just killed a guy. Avoid - unless somebody is offering you alcohol for beating it.

  • A brilliant action game with one of the funniest duos I've seen in a video game. I was originally dismissing this game because I don't enjoy horror games, but decided to pick it up anyways since it was becoming a rare game to find. When I booted up the game, I was surprised the game has more in common with the hilarious Evil Dead films than traditional horror and that kept me playing it. While the gameplay is pretty traditional for third-person shooters with a bit unresponsive aiming, the writing in this game and the hilarity of the contrast between the action and the brilliant Akira Yamaoka soundtrack make this among my favorite games from last year.

  • Grabbed the game from a sale bin although I didn't really like the demo when I tried it back when the game was released. The on-rails platforming was very off putting at first, but that isn't very much unlike the platforming in the Uncharted series so I don't hold that against the game. The game didn't really grab me until chapter 5 when the Cloud was introduced and I just spent around 20 minutes surfing on it. I also have to mention what pretty set-pieces it has and character development is also well written (for a video game). I'm glad I played through it.

  • One of the best action games I've ever played. Explosion full cut-scenes really crown this one and the nice conspiracy plot was fun. There's not enough good sci-fi games these days and Vanquish fills that void nicely.

  • Killzone 3 is definitely full of eye candy and great looking locales, but it's paper thin plot and cringe worthy dialog make the game's SP campaign a mediocre experience. While the shooting feels ok, the enemies are bullet sponges to the max.

  • I don't usually list arcade-style games in these lists, but after spending almost 20 hours with the game getting all the medals from each event, I can safely say I beat it. Fun little game that got me addicted pretty badly. Have to keep this in mind when voting for the best download only game of the year.

  • I'm quite torn what to think about L.A. Noire as a game. I enjoyed how well written detective fiction the game has and the facial animation tech is astounding. But the problem with the game is that it keeps the player in a very tight leash - not giving any freedom to play around with the game's mechanics. You can only beat a guy up when the game gives you a specific guy to beat. You can't shoot anyone unless Phelps takes his gun out automatically. There's also not much to do outside from going from point A to point B, investigating the scene and chasing fleeing suspects/witnesses. It's definitely a linear experience with quite a lot of handholding, but something in me enjoyed the heck out of the game. Perhaps part of it was the fact that at times I role played as a maniac dickhead asking his partner directions to the next location in every corner, pushing people around on the street, and smashing the car on pretty much everyone in the way.

  • Finally managed to sit down and play through Puzzle Agent. Most of the puzzles were doable on the first try, but on the other hand some were so hard that I couldn't get them at all. An enjoyable experience overall. The story was twisted and had some funny parts, but I wouldn't call Nelson Tethers a memorable character. Maybe it's just the very bland character design.

  • Decided to get this since I was in need of a good platformer for the DS. And this unfortunately wasn't all that I needed. The physics felt bad and the level design was boring for the most parts. The game feels like a Mario game - take that as you will.

  • Impulse bought when I felt like a short game with pretty visuals. I was surprised how gamey Journey actually is and how immersed I was while playing it. Absolutely fantastic. And reaching the end with another traveler was cathartic.

  • Bought from a Steam sale and after Journey I thought I was ready for more wandering around. The problem I felt with Dear Esther was the total lack of interaction. The story was interesting, but I was hoping to investigate more. Still, I felt like I had watched a decent Eastern European movie.

  • I don't care for soccer, not one bit. But Inazuma Eleven's unique take on the sport and it's interesting RPG mechanics made it a joy to play. Didn't spend time with recruiting new players since that didn't seem worthwhile story wise, but I was really satisfied my time with the game and it's 15h length anyways. Not really feeling like I need more Inazuma Eleven for now, though.

  • One of the most forgettable single player campaigns I've ever played and the controls took a lot of time to get used to. Longer playing sessions made my hands ache - maybe Vita just isn't ergonomic. The game is all about touch screen gimmicks, nothing more.

  • Mindless piece of shit with a senseless plot. Played it because I knew it's a short 2h game.

  • An absolute delight. The levels have a brilliant flow for the most part that reminds a bit of Super Meat Boy. Definitely one of the best platforming games ever made.

  • Great story accompanied by good puzzles. Some of the puzzles were too focused on trial and error, but completing them was rewarding. Plot twists in the game are also amazing and I can recommend Ghost Trick to anyone.

  • Short game, but has interesting mechanic in terms of playable characters. Liked how the story was connected to the movie.

  • So far my Game of the Year. XCOM emphasizes the importance of decision making so much that it made me a very patient man. And I loved every moment of it.

  • Bought Assassin's Creed: Revelations and decided to play the first game in the series since I loved Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood and wanted to see how big the leap between the games was. AC1 is a bit clunky and close to the end I encountered a chain of water related deaths. The story wasn't very engaging and this had a lot to do with character development and motivations. Altaïr isn't a very interesting character and nothing in the game is actually very engaging. When compared to the tragic story of a man discovering the way of the assassins, the story of regaining honor is so much less interesting.

  • One of the most disturbingly violent games I've had pleasure to play. I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought the game and I enjoyed it way more then I had anticipated. Spent playing this over 10h according to Steam and I'm sure I'll keep playing it in the future even though I got the real ending and all the masks.

  • Delightful metroidvania game with Henry Hatsworth's combat mechanics. Get surprisingly difficult in the end and I got frustrated with some parts, but managed to finally beat it and have no regrets. One of the better games of the DS library, although I think they could've done more with the monster mechanics-wise.
