@JazGalaxy:
Your nostalgia is blinding you if you really think modern games have not surpassed Doom.  Or do you just mean modern FPS's don't use the same mechanics?  They don't use the same mechanics because they have better ones.  I mean what are you saying here, that if Jeff had played Doom without cheats start to finish we would have given Modern Warfare 2 a 4 out of 5?  What mechanics are you even talking about?

And I don't think you understand what gold standard means.  That means the very best, hands down, that everything else should aspire to half as good as it.  Most modern FPS surpass Doom by default.  You are right in thinking that no other FPS has changed video games as dramatically as Doom, but that is because it was the first one.  And it was fucking awesome for it's time.  But yeah, the longer I type, the more I think you are trolling.  Doom is not the best FPS ever, maybe the most influential, but not the best.

And I still don't understand why them playing it with cheats somehow makes them less credible.  Now that I think about it, Brad even said buying Doom on a whim is what got him into games.  I really want you to reply to this post because I don't think you have made your thoughts very clear here.  Or you have and you are just plain wrong by any non-crazy person standards.

@TwoOneFive: If you are really looking for challenge than go for it.  But as someone who plays a whole hell of a lot of Mount and Blade and deals with meh graphics and janky gameplay, you have to be able to deal with that a lot.  The ragdolls suck in a pretty funny way, some of the art assets are shit, the combat is..... divisive?  Hard to describe, it looks more complicated and interesting than it is but once you figure out it's tricks it seems less cool.  And the tutorials suck and a lot of the game mechanics are too hidden.

But now that I have shit all over it, heres this.  You know when a game reeks of a suits influence?  No one but game designers touched this game, it is a niche game that got more mass appeal than it should have, and it shows.  The dudes who made this had goals and things they wanted to do and they did them and no one told them no and it's refreshing.  If a major Japanese publisher was calling the shots you can be there would be more tits on skinny female characters, ridiculous powers and so on.  But instead you get a game that is distinctly Japanese in feel but also very reserved with some of the best aspects of western RPG's included.

Dude, go play Demon's Souls!  I am gonna get my copy back from my friend and start a new character, I love that game!

Dude people always hate reviewers, that is nothing new, your just paying closer attention than before.  And my two cents on Backbreaker, I really don't give a shit about Football (and I'm a redblooded American) but the action looks pretty cool in Backbreaker, it looks like a game and not a sim, thus I put it on my Gamefly.

@JazGalaxy: You are a crazy person who think far too hard about this.  Yeah when I was like 9 and I played doom for the first time I sucked a lot and turned on cheats.  I still thought the design, music and pacing were awesome, I just sucked hard and had no basis for that genre.  You talk about cheat codes as if they are a terrible thing, but without them I doubt Doom would be known as it is today.

@Jayross: They have talked about doing user videos in the past and have said it is not worth the cost.  And really, user written news?  Even before moderating issues, just use a different site if you really want to know something about a game.  The GB staff have said they will cover the stuff they want to cover.  Besides, what is a user going to tell us about a game other than the stuff they pulled from another site.  Random users aren't invited to press events.

User Quick looks?  Do you have that kind of capture equipment?  And you can look on Youtube for a let's play of any game worth having one.  If Giant Bomb is going to sanction content that content would have to be on par with the content they produce, which just won't happen.

And really how much involvement do you expect them to have in a tournament?  There would be too many for them to check out.  If you don't expect involvement than thats really no needed.  People who only casually want to play aren't going to care enough and people who play games enough to play in a tournament already have their own quality ways of organizing.

Basically everything you are suggesting requires more resources than the average user has.  But all users have some bit of knowledge they can drop on different pages, which is why the wiki works.  News and Quicklooks of the quality level you would need for GB to officially sanction it require too many resources people don't have.  On the flip side, all you need to write a review is to have a opinion about something, which is why there are user reviews.  No special skills or resources needed and in no way can you hold GB accountable for errors or misinformation in user reviews.

@DevWil:
The way meat is processed in our society is messed up and wrong.  But you are wrong, eating meat is not a dick a move.  It comes naturally to us, it is delicious, they are not intelligent beings.  People do eat too much meat and the ways we produce it are for the most part, abusive, but cutting it out entirely will never solve anything.  It's the same response you could have to alcohol, remember how well prohibition worked?  People want it and they will continue to get it, but we need to do it better.  Where I live it is not hard to free range grass fed beef, and this needs to continue to be the case elsewhere, but it will take time.

Education and how you educate is key.  If you tell a meat lover "the way you get your meat is terrible and inhumane! So stop"  They are going to rightfully tell you to fuck off.  If you tell a meat lover "Mass meat farming is terrible for the animals, terrible for the environment as a whole, and terrible for you!  Instead of 5 shitty burgers a week, go get one awesome burger that won't kill you!"

Like your blog, this is stream of consciousness, so I am jumping around a bit, but I read some comments and fuck dude, intelligent aliens and humans are separate from animals.  I would kill every single animal of a species if it cured one fatal human disease.

I am trying to figure out your value system, and really it just seems centered on anything living should not be killed if it is not entirely, 100 percent necessary for survival.  Read that sentence, cause it looks great, it is an awesome argument for vegetarianism.  But you know what?  I love Gal-Bi ribs, I love Prosciutto, I love catching Dungeness crab off the Oregon coast with my dad.  Humans are self-aware, we don't just strive to survive we strive to learn, understand and enjoy.  I will try and not have a willfully negative impact on the world with my actions but I am not going punish myself for doing something I enjoy.

It's ok if no one knows the person you write this about, but dude, Jeff?  He is funny, a great games critic and has a cool website, but that makes him one of the people you admire most?  It's hard to get help on something like this because no one knows who influences you, but let me tell what i would answer.  This woman I worked for from when I was 16 to 18 is my choice.  I was in a rough patch in my life and she instilled in me self-confidence, respected me like no one else ever had and where other adults seems to demand respect from youth, she earned it rightfully.  She was dying and had every right to stay at home and try and be comfortable, but instead she rode her electric scooter chair to work every day and ran a non-profit, and continued to do so through notes and phone calls from her hospital bed.  She literally only stopped when she died.  Now, we have the same workload as when she was running things herself, but 3 people do it.  In my book, she is someone worth admiring.  Again, Jeff is cool and all but as you don't know him personally I find it really sad if you can't think of anyone better.

ehhhh I say no. I think the silent protagonist works really well for these games. I like being able to project your own character onto him/her. It would be really jarring if he/she had a voice. "
I agree, if the main character had a voice it would kill it for me.  What I do want to see are, like the OP, social links having a bigger impact and affecting each other more.

Did anyone else really enjoy this game like I did?  Let me hear your favorite part!

I loved it when you have that one fight your supposed to run from and if you try and punch the guy he grabs your fist.  Also when you inject yourself for the final time and you leap out of that grate into the air and go all Dragonball Z one everyone.
