Stonecutter: Best of 2009

Apologies to: Batman AA and Dragon Age. Unfortunately I just haven't had time to play either of you yet this year. Hopefully I'll get the chance after Christmas, you both look quite tasty. Both of you probably make this list if only I had had the chance.

Honorable mentions:

Flower: You're a game, no matter what they say. You might even be #11
Gravity Crash: You're on this list if you'd called yourself Solar Jetman 2 and let me drag powerups back to my ship.
Trine: You are flawed, but I still love you.
Shatter: Shadooby. You're the best Breakout clone ever
Rocket Riot: You shouldn't be this fun, but yet...
Muramasa: God you're gorgeous. I just wish you wouldn't have been so repetive.
Brutal Legend: You screwed up, big time, but I still love you.
Street Figher IV: You brought back memores of the super nintendo days, I'm just not hardcore enough to get into fighters like I'd need to if I was going to fully enjoy you
A Boy and His Blob: I promise I will take the shrink wrap off of you in 2010. I'm so sorry I neglected you up until now.
God of War Collection: You're as fun as you ever were, but I can't put a compilation of two old games on this list.
Beatles Rock Band: You're awesome, but I still spent more time with RB 2, even after your release
Madden 10: I've never liked a Madden game this much, it's the first time I've really loved a football game since NFL2k5. I can't fit it in on the top 10, but it's easly in the top 12.

List items

  • To this day, Crackdown is one of my favorite games of all time inFAMOUS managed to out-Crackdown, Crackdown in such a glorious, glorious way. Releasing in may probably kills its GOTY candidacy, but this is my Game of the Year.

  • This was such a great year for downloadable games, and SC was the best of the bunch. It's been too long since we've had a good metroidvania on a console and SC delivered. Easily one of the ten best games of the year.

  • It's Super Mario Bros. 4. That's really all I need, but it does SO much more. Multiplayer is an absolute gas, the kind of giggling, 4 player swearfest that nintendo has perfected over the years.

  • Although adding RPG elements to another genre is almost requisite to building a game these days, Borderlands does it so consistently and thoroughly it manages to blur the line between FPS and RPG. It's been attempted before, but never before has a game managed to scratch the lootwhore itch while providing this deep an rewarding experience as a shooter. I was very ready for this game to be a giant letdown. That it not only met but surpassed expectations is shocking. I'll be shocked if we're not talking about games being "Borderlands-esque" in the next few years.

  • Ooohhh boy. This game has some issues. Mulitplayer is bugged to hell, single player gameplay has all of the same problems (infinite respawning, run, run, die, spawn, run, run, die spawn) that CoD4 had... but I don't care, it's still loads of fun. No dog rapers with Akimbos, no knife classes, no bugged jav missiles have ruined my fun with this game, and I'm still compelled by the single player, even though I've yet to finish it. Game of forever it is not, but it's still excellent.

  • Easily the best 3rd party Wii game of the year, in the best year for 3rd party games Nintendo has had since... Probably the Super Nintendo. Little Kings Story is a game I should hate. Control is basically indirect, just calling and sending units, and even that is a bit unwieldy because of the game's inexpiable decision to avoid using the Wii Remote's pointer. It melds Tactical RTS, builder sim and RPG so successfully in a way that box covers have bragged about, but almost never delivered on.

  • So hard. Hard as nails. Frustrating. It misses a lot of its potential, and it will make you want to chuck your controller, but goddamn if it doesn't end up being fun as hell in the end. Destructive environments are nothing new, and missions that allow you to accomplish them in different ways has been done before, but never since have the two been melded so seamlessly. Like Borderlands, RF:G is a game whose greatest success is that it really, really delivers on it's concept.

  • Easily one of the best single player experiences of the year, gorgeous, cinematic and fun. I can't bring myself to put it any higher though. I'm not a fan of 3rd person shooter muitplayer, and as much as I enjoyed the ride, investing another 10-15 hours to play through it again is not high on my list of things to do, when there's so many other great games to play.

  • Best Ratchet Ever? I'm not sure. I'm not done yet, but it feels like it's even better than Goin Commando and Up Your Arsenal. Ratchet is one of my favorite series ever, and this edition did not let me down in the slightest.

  • This is probably not a very popular choice, but I can't help myself. NFS:S scratches a my racing itch in the same way the Project Gotham games did. It hits the perfect sweet spot on the sim/arcade spectrum for my racing tastes, and it's absolutely gorgeous. It doesn't have the depth of a Forza or GT, but I don't care, it does exactly what I want it to do.
