GOTY 2013

I played a lot of video games this year, and here are some cool ones.

I would probably put Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm at the top of this list, but that's an expansion and doesn't really count right? Right?

List items

  • I really enjoy open world games and crime movies, and GTA 5 is more or less those things. The world built around this game is both beautiful and stunning, and I enjoyed just driving around from time to time just to see things. The story holds up well in my opinion, and the heist missions were great. My only real complaint was GTA online being a bit of a bummer, and not enough of the heist missions.

  • This game surprised me the most. I had never played an Animal Crossing game, and the only reason I even tried this one was a combination zeitgeist and I got some 3DS money for buying Shin Megami Tensei 4 and Fire Emblem Awakening. In the end I fell in love with this game, and put more than 100 hours in to it.

  • One of my favorite childhood games is A Link to the Past, so it's no surprise this game is high up here. Initially I feared the wall mechanic would be too gimmicky, but I ended up falling in love with it and the way it allowed you to explore a 2D environment.

  • A great follow up to Bioshock. I'm a big fan of all the American symbolism, and the Luteces were some of the best characters in any game this year.

  • Brad was right, this game is great. What this game does with it's control scheme and how it weaves that in to the story is simply incredible. Definitely one of the more emotional games I've played in a long while. I will remember this game fondly for a long while.

  • The sheer ridiculousness of this game is something worth witnessing. The combo system holds up well, and the story is alright for what it is. This game has some of the more engaging and diverse boss fights around. Like Animal Crossing, this was the first game in the Devil May Cry series I actually played, and I look forward to more games in the series if they're more like this game instead of the older self serious games.

  • This game is stupid in the best of ways. It's no Saint's Row the Third, but it definitely turns the knob all the way to 11 with the amount of audacity it brings to the table. Again, I really like open world games. The big disappointment here is that the city is exactly the same, and I played SR3 less than 6 months before SR4 came out.

  • Again, open worlds and what not.

This game brought one of my favorite things from Assassin's Creed 3 (a game I did not really enjoy), the naval combat. It was great sailing the ocean and getting in to fights with other ships. The game within a game is great, and the story strays away from a lot of the things I did not like about the previous Assassin's game.

  • A really short and sweet little game. Ultimately the story fell a little flat for me personally, but the character development and the super nostalgic 90s atmosphere this game brings means it gets on this list.

  • Yeah you know whatever, open world zombie slaughtering goofiness. Far and away the best in the series.
