Three strikes, Ubisoft

Sigh. I'm just done with this shit now Ubisoft. Three times I've been excited for your games on PC, and every single time you've fucked me. It doesn't help me that refunds on Steam is a hassle. Shitty DRM I can theoretically handle (I even suffered through Starforce for Silent Hunter 3, and that was worth it), but shoving games out the door in a barely functional condition is not only "not cool", it really just serves to accentuate the worst PC gaming has to offer; Awesome potential coupled with bottomless disappointment. It's just heartbreaking.

From Dust was one of the worst PC ports I have ever seen. How do you get a mouse cursor wrong in 2011?

Silent Hunter 5 built on a fantastic foundation, but somehow managed to do *less* than the games that came before it, and barely worked at all while trying to do *that*.

Anno 1404 was one of my favorite PC strategy games ever, just gorgeous and intelligent and satisfying to play. And here Anno 2070 comes out looking gorgeous, but, again, barely working, with game crippling bugs stopping players from progressing in the campaign, and faulty DRM that is as likely to let you play the game as it is to block you out for seemingly no reason whatsoever.

Get your shit together. There is no reason for you to suck this enormous amount of ass when you've done good things on the platform in the past. There's nothing exciting coming from your direction that I can think of, and you know what, the next time I let myself get duped into being excited about something you're doing on the PC, I'm going to have to stop myself and remember that there is no potential too great for Ubisoft to take a fat crap all over.

Fuck you.

So, so glad I pirated From Dust PC before I put money down for it, what an abomination that was.

With respect, there's a simple answer to this (and it applies to all gamers).

Don't like it? Don't buy it.

Games are a consumer-led industry. If people don't buy things, publishers realise that they're doing something wrong and will change how they do things.

Of course, I'm over-simplifying. Ubisoft has been deliberately telling people that games won't be using "Always-on" DRM well before the launch to generate pre-orders, and then at the last minute announce that they are acting otherwise. That being said, if people hadn't bought them to begin with, Ubisoft would have noticed.

The problems come from not knowing exactly what you're buying when you make the purchase. It is not unreasonable to expect that the product you buy work out of the box.

Am I really the only person who has never had trouble with any 3rd party DRM. Be it Ubisoft, GFWL, or what ever. I would have to imagine that I am some percentage of the pc gamer's that dose not have and trouble with DRM.

But I can see where your coming from and I just can't stand them not telling you what your getting in to from the start I mean come on if your shiting your paints over piracy just use fucking Steam it is an always on DRM but everyone trusted it.

The one thing I can't stand is the that will do way of making PC versions it's just disgraceful and just a dick move. We want to buy your game so why are you all ways tiring to screw us in the ass its just counter productive.

Days like this I'm glad I don't play Ubisoft games (aside from Assassin's Creed and the occasional decent game)

I'm not particularly pissed about the DRM no. It's just that the DRM becomes the icing on a cake that is one brick of shit, with some sprinkles of awesome, and then another fat brick of shit right on top of that again.

I mean leave it to the dudes with no budget and no reputation to fuck up games so soundly, but Ubisoft really have no excuse. You go to these publishers because you, let's face it, expect a certain degree of quality, yet Ubisoft keep routinely shafting themselves on the PC. It's just tragic to see.

I mean there is no reason these games shouldn't have been given more care. Instead of being gorgeous (they're all gorgeous) and innovative (all of them are innovative, on paper) games, they give off the sense that nobody even cared about them at the end.

We still mad at UbiSoft DRM? I thought we forgot about that...

Nope, we're mad that they dropped the ball on properly creating PC controls and making super-buggy games on the PC in this thread. I haven't played any of their products for PC, but that's a huge bummer to hear that it's so consistently a problem, even for smaller releases. Anyone who can tell me whether the Far Cry games are playable on PC? It's the platform I own them on, but I haven't booted them up yet. If that's not the way to play them, I can probably get them again for Xbox.

This reply might seem out of topic-ish but bear with me. I was talking with a friend of mine who works at Valve about this the other day. While Steam offers a great distribution platform, it lacks of a way for people who buy a game to share their thoughts on it on the game page itself. I am not talking about going to the forums and digging through a bunch of posts. I am talking something like iTunes has where you can actually read how good or bad a game is from the game page. I am surprised Steam hasn't coughed something like this before.

With the issue the OP brought on I think he is right on! Its a pity we will never know for sure if someone from UBISoft will ever read this complaint and do something about it. One of the first things I noticed about Anno 2070 was that some of UBISoft's own network streaming content was not working appropiately. I havent experienced any lock on glitches where I cant progress on the story line (aside from being stuck on Chapter 2, where the guy who picks up the tools never showed up). I had never played a game of Anno before and this one I am enjoying it. It feels the gap Skyrim left open.

I think the best way for game company's to change their godly attitude is for gamers to not buy their games. The best way to do it is for people to be able to vote for or against the game in their favorite deployment platform (Steam, etc). If you dont buy their game its worse for them than Piracy. So do it.

Oh and Ubisoft... Fuck you too.

@applet0n: While your answer is sensible, I still sympathize with the OP. He or she obviously enjoys the content of these games a lot, and it's a shame he has to miss out on it because of simple laziness or unfortunate and/or unnecessary hurdles ruining the experience. Nothing changes the fact that Ubisoft is treating its customers with relative disdain.

As you point out though, people will probably stop buying these products if they are so shitty, and eventually the process will straighten itself out. It's just too bad it had to happen this way at all.
