Facebook On Giantbomb

Whilst I approve of the recent updates made to giantbomb, one aspect in particular seems slightly confusing to me; the integration of Facebook with Giantbomb. For me Giantbomb is a place I come to talk about videogames because I feel that, putting it frankly, my friends in the real world don't really give a fuck. Or maybe they do, but perhaps not to such an intense level. I use Giantbomb as a place where I can go to geek out, a place where I can discuss the most intricate details of the games I love with like-minded people. The whole reason I use a site like giantbomb in the first place is because the people I work with in real life, the people who I see on a daily basis, have no interest in any of this shit.

Don't panic. It's not actually a book of faces.
Don't panic. It's not actually a book of faces.

There is a train of thought here that implies shame.

I'm not ashamed of how I spend my time. My friends are aware of my blog, they know what I write - they act as my anchor to reality. I'm not scared of people finding out who I am, there are already a great many giantbomb members added as friends on my facebook. However i'm not sure I want every goofy 2am forum post plastered on the website which is my primary method of communicating with all my friends, family, ex-schoolmates and peers from around the world. That world is not one that would mingle well with this world of intense geekdom. And similarly, you probably don't give a fuck what happens to me in the real world. Here's a preview: University, Girlfriend, Alcohol. In that order. See? Told you.

So I'm not really sure who this "Link with facebook" feature appeals to?  Maybe people who have already bridged the gap between giantbomb and the real world? For the moment i'm happy keeping them separate.

I find it sadly ironic that it's now easier for people to find my blogs on facebook than on giantbomb.

The people I talk to on facebook are completely different from the people I talk to on giantbomb and they most likely don't give a fuck about what happens here. Some people don't like computer games. That's cool. However the people on giantbomb who I don't have added on facebook but who might actually care about what I have to say still have no real way of easily finding my work unless I publish it to the forums? That's kinda fucked up...

Sorry to kill the buzz. I still love you, Whiskey.

Thanks For Reading
Love Sweep

It's a 25-pixel button at the top of the page people, if you don't want to use it or don't like what it offers, don't click it! If your hatred for the idea burns like a thousand flaming Goku spirit bombs or whatever then I'll do you one better:  Install adblock  http://adblockplus.org/en/installation   and banish it from your sight!

Red is saying that people who might possibly know of GB (people who he's around, maybe at school) would think of GB as place for dorks. He's in no way saying that GB is full of dorks.

@snide:  All fairness to Snide (easily one of the coolest guys ive seen),  but in regards to Show me one site that even allows your blog to be broadcast outside of a profile page!  "

Destructoid seems to have one of the closest knit communities out of the video game sites and they promote blogs through their blog page and also promote community blogs on their front page. For example
http://www.destructoid.com/the-daily-hotness-sonic--162635.phtml  - promotion of blogs on the front page
http://www.destructoid.com/elephant/posts_by_users.phtml?subnav=new&t=community    - community blogs section

Giantbomb gets the green light, always.

I do wonder, if this is really about the little blue box at the top or about people being afraid of others finding out they spend hours discussing the  quantum physics of Miranda's butt. Because I can't imagine people are still ashamed to say they play videogames.

I'm not entirely sure what you are saying here. Do you mean that I when I make a thread on a gamepage that no one knows that exists I have to bump it every 4 hours to keep it on the first page of recent discussions to "market" myself?  Because if i do not, it will fall of that first page and since no one will ever check out the game-page i would never get a reply. It is the same issue for blogs.

I agree, I don't understand it either, it just seems really weird. My real friends on Facebook would be baffled and confused by any comments concerning videogames, or anything  else geeky.

Oh hey, here are the only bits of common sense in this stupid blog. I know Sweep said he's ignoring the connectivity (really, the only thing he meant to say), but you all need to stop whining about keeping the two sites separate. The only thing you should be ashamed of is your shame in visiting this site and having that potentially made visible on your fucking Facebook. If you're so keen on keeping your appreciation for gaming culture away from your friends or family, then maybe you need to take a step back and examine yourself. Have you honestly built your GB persona to the point of being ashamed of it?  And if you have, why the hell are you complaining about something that's completely optional? God, I'll probably leave this site soon. You're all bunch of stupid internet drama queens, attention grabbers and most unappreciative bunch I've ever seen in comparison to the amount of work the people behind this site do.

So I just tested it out and it doesn't seem to post your forum post on your facebook, Just the blogs and if you choose to it shows a daily update on your achievements. No biggie, no spam assault on the news/live feed.

I think thats where a lot of the initial worry comes in. That all our posts will spam people on facebook when its quite untrue. A lot of it is the wording in the Facebook API that makes it sound like thats what it does.

@Sleepy_Insomniac: Don't say that I have common sense.  I wear sandals year round, even when it's 20 degrees outside.  Hell, I mosh in sandals.  There's no common sense here.  What I have is logic, which is something completely different in my book!  lol

As far as Snide's post goes (because let's face it, why not comment on what a staff member had to post), I ran a gaming site for three years...built it from the ground up.  I understand EXACTLY where you are coming from.

And for the last bit - I've never played Icewind Dale.  =  /  I remember seeing it when it first came out, as I worked in Best Buy in Phoenix, AZ (the one that was on 26th and Camelback).  Unfortunately, I was too deep into Half-Life to try it out...and things just snowballed from there.  Maybe one day, I'll check it out.

"I find it sadly ironic that it's now easier for people to find my blogs on facebook than on giantbomb." It's obvious that this whole thread is just a loaded arguement in order for him to once again start up the whole "community spotlight" arguement. This isn't about Facebook. It's about Sweep and some of the other people on this site not being able to get over the fact that there content isn't as prominent as the staff's. And quite frankly, it's getting old. "

I think you've got it all wrong man. I think what he is trying to say, is that he doesnt want people on facebook looking at his blogs, they are meant for giantbomb. I think you have a bit of a conspiracy theory going on there. Sweep isnt nearly as egotistical as you seem to think.

I'm still greatly interested in hearing why some of you want absolutely no interaction between the two. In my experience with dealing with dozens upon dozens of other social sites, the only negative I've ever come across is when an application spams your friends and as Snide pointed out, GiantBomb doesn't do this.

So why all the rage again? It seriously can't be "I don't want to see a button," can it? Let's keep in mind that this is an entirely optional feature. "
I dont see any rage? aside from snides post and everybody unhelpfully pointing out sweep doesnt need to use the option (which he obviously knows.)   If anyone actually bothered to read the blog, they might realise sweep wasnt raging so much as posing the question, "will people use this? why?"  As far as my life is concerned, my gaming habit and time i spend with giantbomb will be severely misunderstood by most of my friends and family on facebook. It's that simple. I like the two worlds very separated.  Unlike many of you, i dont live in a cosy geekworld. I work in a trade, 95 percent of people i know in the real world want nothing to do with video games and thats fine with me. I dont need to be told it should be any different "

I finally got to understand what the button does by reading this thread. But unlike a whole lot of other people I kept my mouth shut until I knew instead of going on crazy negative tangents.
If I can choose exactly what's get's pushed to Facebook then I'm cool with this. I don't feel ashamed of who I am and I have lots of friends on Facebook that are gamers too so it's not wierd for me to have videogame realated updates on Facebook. My only fear would been that I would spam my friends with updates like the f**king Farmvilles and their likes.
The only negative thing I have to say about the little button is that it loads into the site a bit slow so I always look at it when I relod the page. A minor annoyance.

Excelent post by Snide. Being a editor in chief myself of game site I sure as hell now how he feels. When you work hard on stuff and people then react negative before knowing facts.
One tip for avoiding this in the future. Make an article/post (on the frontpage so everyone can see it) that in detail explains exactly what the updates have done. We started doing this last summer on my site and the feedback is positive because very few things get's misunderstood.

WHERE TO BEGIN?

@Hamz:

Your points are all valid. Just because we don't NEED it to happen doesn't mean it's not a good idea.

@Johnny5

 said:

Yeah. Most of them.

@snide:

I didn't deserve half the shit you just threw at me. Not by a long shot. A whole chunk what you were saying wasn't even related to what I wrote. I love this website and I massively appreciate all the work you guys have done. My criticism was as constructive as possible. At no point in either of my threads did I request for features to be removed - merely questioned how people would use them and suggested potential improvements. I'm not making a fuss. I'm not doing this to cause trouble.

Sweep Said:

I am ignoring it. I just wanted to explain why i'm ignoring it :D

I know this is one of the best websites around. Thats why i'm here using it. That's why I feel passionate enough to get actively involved. Out of a whole shitfuck of whiners and complainers I was the only person to offer anything constructive and as a result I got fucking crucified. Half the shit you just talked about wasn't even said by me. There are a lot of people here who seem to agree with what I had to say so why am I the only one getting smashed by a wall of text? And by a lot of people I mean:

@Sweep: You have yourself to blame for the misdirection, a little bit. I mean, this thread is called "Facebook on Giantbomb", and you've got that huge-ass logo going on.

Your actual gripe is that the GB staff spent time on implementing a Facebook thing, instead of reading your mind and implementing your internal promotion idea. The thing is, promoting your stuff internally doesn't do the site any good. The only people who will see it are here already! GB, as a business, needs to draw people in. Facebook is effing huge. 1 + 1 = more readers.

I'm sure carving out a little bit of Bomb will do your ego no end of good (impressive list of quotes, by the way), but it just seems a little too self-serving.

@Jerusahat: Read Before Posting. Sweep is not mad about the feature, his post was mostly just him wondering why people would use it.

@Sweep: I like your blogs Sweep but common man, your blog IS you complaining/questioning about facebook integration and like Snide said nothing is forced, its for the few(thousand) people who would like it. Its a small icon that's not really in the way so really...who cares if YOU won't use it, someone will. Not to provoke you or anything but quoting a bunch of people as if to say " SEE ALL THESE PEOPLE AGREE WITH ME" just makes you look like a child.

I'm not trying to come across like a dick...just sayin

@Jerusahat:  heheh sorry after all the drama i'm trying not to take it too seriously. I totally appreciate why linking with a site like facebook could be beneficial for the publicity of giantbomb. However the reality of me making my giantbomb persona accessible to my friends and family makes me feel slightly uncomfortable. I would prefer to retain the level of control which allows me to directly decide what they are and are not exposed to regarding my videogame addiction. It's probably not a good idea for them to know I have seen every episode of the Endurance Run twice, for example. For me, at least, there is no bridge between what happens on giantbomb and what happens on facebook. Some people probably have no issue at all with this. That was the point of the blog - to promote discussion.

I wasn't really expecting anything to come of my idea. It was more just a reflective look at the possibilities. It seemed like a more productive exercise than simply complaining loudly. If it got people thinking about the possibilities then that at the very least was a success.

I assume you are referring to the last paragraph when you imply i'm taking it personally? Not at all. That was actually just an afterthought. I kind of wish I had never included it - especially considering how many people took it the wrong way. I think people thought that was the primary purpose of the blog which, you are right, is probably why I got so much flak as a result. I harbour no resentment towards giantbomb's decision to incorporate facebook into the site.

@Jeffsekai: Not so much complaining. But yeah, point taken. See above reply to Jerusahat ^^^^^ The reason I stuck all those quotes up there was because I felt like I had been personally targeted to take the full weight of the opposition when there is clearly a large group of people who feel the same way as me. It's not just one crazy dude with a blog...

@MasterOfPenguins_Zell: Thank you. Call me shallow, but among my circle of friends we don't really discuss video games. The people I know who do discuss video games are obnoxious, "PWNZOR"-saying idiots, who I do not want to associate with.

@Sweep: Plenty of people read your original post and understood it just fine.  We also noticed that you threw an underhanded lob by saying that blogs are now easier to find on Facebook than they are on Giant Bomb.  This is something that is not true, and in turn, people decided to comment on that...especially since it plays into your previous thread about a community spotlight page on the site.

By the way...Facebook did a facelift today...and I can't find my own blog anywhere...so, it personally seems that point is now moot.

You are complaining about Facebook connectivity, why it's here, and who would use it.  Plenty of us will, and a small minority of people (you included) who want to complain that it's a dumb feature or that it's a pointless feature...are the minority.  I have already activated it, as have many people.

This is such a dumb thing to argue about. How about everyone just takes 5 to go wash the sand out of their vaginas and then uses their freetime to play a videogame, or make posts about a videogame instead of having a crazy bitchfest about a new button that you can click on, if you want to. I can't believe people really have such low-stress lives that they feel the need to get hot-and-bothered over site designs now. The good news for dave is that the percentage of giantbomb users who will stumble on this train-wreck of a thread is pretty low.

If it really bothers you, maybe someone can make a greasmonkey script that blocks the facebook frame from appearing for you. Then you can live in your own facebook-free shard universe.

From what I can tell, you connect your accounts and then you can post links to things on giant bomb on your facebook page. So if I want to promote one of my lists or threads or something, I can do that. I really don't see the problem here...
