I felt the same way when I saw Spider-Man doing his web shit - unrealistic. https://t.co/bgjgJKZ8ba

My 10 Favourite Games Of The Generation (in no particular order)

We're coming to the end of the current console generation, so I thought i'd put together my favourite games of the last 7-8 years. There have been some great games over the last few years, some of which I haven't mentioned, but I tried to stick games on here that I am still interested in playing! Oh, and yes, I'm British, so expect to see an overuse of the letter 'u'...

List items

  • Yes, you can argue it's dated now, but at the time, GTA IV advanced the series, adding serious undertones to match a library of ludicrous characters. Many people didn't enjoy it, and I get that it ditched the all out ridiculousness of the last generation of games, but it really felt important at the time, and it sticks out in my mind as a high point of this last 8 or so years.

  • I never really played the original Starcraft on a competitive level. I'd messed around with the campaign a bit, but I only really got into Starcraft 2 off the back of a friends recommendation. The multiplayers ability to dole out winnable games, allows less competent players to still enjoy the experience, but keeps the high end players encapsulated too. I've never spent as many hours playing a game in my short life's history, and with the sequel, Heart Of The Swarm, now nearly in stores, I can't see my obsession ending any time soon!

  • Portal 1 was a brilliant surprise. It offered some incredibly clever design, and was matched by some brilliantly funny dialogue. The second game continued that legacy, extending the length of the game and adding in a really fun co-op mode. Clever design and brilliant writing is what makes this game a top 10 for me!

  • It re-defined the way we play multiplayer shooters, and it had a very solid single player campaign. The game was nothing short of staggering when it came out, and pretty much every shooter since has borrowed from its RPG levelling infused multiplayer mode. It's still a great game today, and will likely continue to be influential well into the next generation.

  • This game surprised everyone. Jurassic Park had disappointed, and with The Walking Dead coming amongst an influx of Zombie games, it seemed destined to be average at best. It turned out to be an emotionally intensive 5 episode adventure, which truly tugged on the metaphorical heartstrings. Never before has a game emotionally effected me in this way, and for that reason, it deserves real recognition for it's superb storytelling and character building.

  • This is a bit of a cop out really, as FIFA has been getting better year on year since 2007. I guess I picked 13, as it was the latest, but all the games have been good. The 'Seasons' mode is what have brought me back again and again. I genuinely feel that even non-Football fans would find something to love here.

  • At the time of release, Gears of War was one of the best looking games on the market. It also made dropping into cover feel seamless. Although the story was a bit silly, it was just really good fun! The multiplayer was genuinely exciting too, with you working as a team of 4, you had to cooperate if you wanted to survive and win.

  • The game was crazy good looking, crazy in terms of character and story, man, it was just really fucking crazy! There were some memorable moments, and although I had to look into back story online to overcome the convoluted nature the game presented, it has stuck with me, as no one else makes games as grandiose and fucked as Kojima!

  • Like The Walking Dead, this was another huge surprise. The Metroid/Castlevania-like design give you reason to re-visit areas you couldn't previously reach, to attain the silly amount of secrets and collectibles on show. Storywise, the proverbial nail was hit on the head. It was it's own, in a time when The Dark Night was making waves, it was nice to see Rocksteady make Batman it's own.

  • Mass Effect was a good game, but it had many flaws. Mass Effect 2, despite having a piss poor ending, managed to fit so much into it's world and surrounding lore. The control system was based on Gears Of Wars successful cover system, which made the action feel like less of a dice roll. The voice acting is great, and the freedom to fly anywhere and explore planets and systems felt really exciting.
