I'm that weird type of gal.

I'm that weird type of gal.
No Caption Provided
Yeah, the type that plays a game for 5 hours and calls it a classic. Just reaching level 5 in Borderlands or playing through The Witcher 2's intro makes me wanna label em as games of the year. No need for complex mechanics, intricate stories or immersive worlds, I have this gut feeling about some games.

I'm that weird type of gal that ignores an entire soundtrack in favor of one of the first songs for the rest of the game. I'm not easily sold but I'm just that impressed with the feeling it gives me. Example here being this song from Borderlands 1, still stuck in my head after all this time, fighting off Rakks and Skags:

What makes me even more of a weird type is the time I spend in game's universes. Played one mission of Starcraft 2, spend the rest of the night reading the wiki/watching Starcraft videos. I know stuff about universes and games I never even touched but I have been wondered by their respective worlds. Their own little beings. I can appreciate franchises for just existing, without having even seen or played them.
I'm the crazy type of gal that spends her morning in nothing more than socks, panties and a blouse as she browses through the newspaper cutting out words and headlines to make custom quotes on my wall. Page after page gets mangled and the emergencies, accidents or interviews have been turned into my own little devices. My wall is now a whirlpool of fonts, words and ravings. Just another page of my life pasted upon the walls.

I'm the mental type, having watched obscure films, series or played the industries under dogs before they got cool. And even after I'll admit. I just make my own way through life, through gaming and through my preferences. There's tons of stuff I haven't watched, played and perhaps never will, but I don't mind. I'm doing it my way. One game at a time.

People wonder, people question, they just can't comprehend passion. Barely acknowledge it. Its all about the stigma. The image and the trail you leave behind are more important than the feeling is what they argue. They tell you, they tell me, its all about the respect of those around you. Its not about you, its about everyone but you.
They tell me, they yell me, they sell me.

Earth ain't no place to go it all alone, to be outside the flock and make it on your own.
But they misunderstand me, as they do so many, and never realize that I'm that crazy, weird and mental type of gal.
No Caption Provided

Who just doesn't give a fuck.

(Edit: Half the pictures don't show up unless I Ctrl + F5 in firefox, but they work in chrome straight away, anyone else?)
Edit 2: This is just some poem like bloggy thingie guys. Not some super critique about cultures or how bloody cool I should be in your eyes. Thought that was clear enough, guess not.

So, i guess i'm in the minority on that regard. I love earrings, jewel-y or not, i think they're interesting and always worth looking at. And i think it depends more on the girl than on the earring itself, ya know? Not just the personality, but the overall look.
Also, @TaliciaDragonsong:, that was a great post! I really enjoy the way you write, so, keep on writing, duder! Wait, can girls be duders? Duderette sounds weird.

@MordeaniisChaos: Amazing game that was.

@Vegetable_Side_Dish: I would if I had one!

@MikeGosot: Not everyone puts a lot of effort into jewelry, its true, but when they do its nice to get noticed, which goes for anything from clothes to hair!
Thank you for the kind words! I think there was a topic discussing the whole duderette thing sometime, but meh, we're all Bombers here!

@TaliciaDragonsong: If we're all Bombers... That means we can't go to NYC? Damn. Also, weirdly enough, i don't care much for the clothes of a girl. I notice earrings, rings, nails, hair, make up, but not the clothes. For me, all girls could walk like this, and i wouldn't care(I think i would like it, actually, so, uh, i guess i care for clothes, but not the feminine ones?).

Nice write up about yourself. Well you are a little unique in a way but that slowly changes. Still think of that one girl real good at competitive FPS that GB featured some years back

I think what is really saving and diversifying the gaming culture is that it is international, least here at GB it is. I'm reminded of that every time GB gets an English, Scottish, Irish, Northern Euro(me -thinks you maybe) Czechoslovakian or German or Russian and so on caller on the line. I'm amazed and personally this works. Gawd it breaks up a lot of bs and different things shine.

Then there is this whole Asian thing happening too, some of which cross feeds with all this. Japan itself and Starcraft 2 for a start. local culture and such starts to take a back seat to what can happen in the world........

nice earrings again.

Cool! Not my format or genre myself, whatever you want to call this post, but I think its cool you threw this out there and let it be known. If anything, its a confidence builder for yourself and the community.

We as a culture, both in gaming and on the internet, value authenticity in experience (however its defined by a variety of people both positive and negative) and one surefire way to earn prestige is to demonstrate that you aren't fronting on what you love or claim to love. We see the backlash on individuals perceived to fake it in nerd culture at large (again a group that is imperfectly and differentially defined). Since authenticity is invariably related to experience, which itself is differentially biased based upon social forces and historical contexts, then who it happens that gains the prestige falls along demographic lines. Gender lines it seems is the main focus, while other lines are also present but less discussed like SES, age, and race, in games. As a result, women speaking out and merely mentioning their love of games results in two reaction: one that is endearing and reassuring that those lines are not absolute and that others with very specific experiences can still love the same thing we do at the same level, and the one that questions the disclosure of being a women as suspect of an ulterior or dubious motive. This second reaction can be libertarian in nature (i.e. it shouldn't matter so there's no logic in disclosing it one way or another), or definitively hostile and often falls into the category of sexual harassment and sexism.

Its altogether unsurprising that people who cross any sort of demographic line face support and resistance along the way. Why am I saying this? Well because there's a tendency for a discussion to devolve into action/reaction stuff that is ultimately arbitrary and ignores the underlying premises to why someone mentions they're not male/white on the internet, and the interactional responses that occur. Now it is my theory that those responses operate under a selection effect where individuals who choose to engage are ones who feel strongly enough to dispute the claim or recognizing the tendency for people to dispute, co-opt that dialectic to infuse humor into their response. In plain terms, when someone says they are a girl on a gaming website/chatroom for reasons related to women usually falling outside the circle of "hardcore gamers" (for lack of a better term), then the people responding do so because it does not fit with the general culture of non-disclosure or is an opportunity to question authenticity. Now most individuals who've been on the internet any amount of time are aware of this and how it can play out so people respond with "ooooh its a girl" in chat and other places with the intent to be funny referencing people's expectations that disclosure of being a girl results in such reactionary discourse. The problem arises when so many subtle intents and interactions all occur with statements like "ooh its a girl", which can be used in line with any reaction (positive or negative) previously mentioned. This is no justification for the consequences of those actions but generally speaking I'm not really interesting in providing that.

If you want, we can discuss this further and offer my insight into the nature of this phenomenon, but if this all seems like mumbo-jumbo to you then I won't feel bad, most people aren't immediately receptive to lectures it seems :D

@bybeach: Exactly! Which is kind of why I feel at home here on GB because we've got people from every part of the globe here! Everyone's their own and discussions here are amongst the best I ever had online.

@BaconGames: So true, a confidence builder is what it felt like when I wrote it!

I've personally given up on convincing people I love games, I just do, as much as any other gamer, and that's the end of it for me. Putting gamers into boxes is silly (unless we're talking Solid Snake cosplay) but sadly still a part of our gamer culture. One day soon every type of gamer will be accepted and not be laughed at for genre, gender or experience. The same could be said about books/movies however but I have never really experienced the 'hate' I have for being a avid reader than I have for being a gamer.

I've probably said this before but I earned my stripes here, I hang around and discussed, I did the faceless gamer type of things and I've been part of this site for two years now. I think its quite fair for me to put a little more personal stuff into my posts/blogs and even if that gets me heat I don't care, they only lower themselves. I'm me, and I'm a lot besides just a gamer, as are many gamers, and that is as much a part of me as the games are.
I personally like reading people's blog because you can learn how someone works outside simple posts, which in turns gives more credit/understanding to their opinions. Much how people love certain members of the GB crew for their tastes/style and have learned that by the videos/reviews/articles.

I thought @Little_Socrates: used expensive words but man, you gave me a headache with those terms. Not that I didn't understand it but whoa, you should be blogging or writing a book yourself with that kind of vocab!

I think I've seen triforce earrings somewhere before but never chainchomps. That's pretty rad.

I'm like this as well. There has been plenty of times where I have lost an entire night reading about a game's story or universe.

That makes three of us.

man wikipedia/wikia etc are dangerous for me. I'm a sucker for robust back fiction. I love that stuff, if a game/property doesn't have it or the potential for it it often loses me.

The one big plus is that it saves me a bunch of money I used to drop on comic books. Now I can read the gist of the major plot twists online for free. Which means more money for games!

I've read your blogs before, and I thought they were really thoughtful and well-written before, and then I realised: Why don't I follow you already?

Mistake rectified. You still write very well, Ms Dragonsong (assuming you don't prefer a different title, which I will use in the future if need be).

@TaliciaDragonsong: you're just a normal girl with a curiosity and wonder for life, just like everyone else. Not trying to take away this. "im special" vibe you are giving yourself. but really, you might have not been the norm 15 years ago for women, you are now.. No, be happy you are in a time where this is acceptable, and create, and be all the artist you can be.. cause if you're just content with just being "special" you're not going to aspire to much.
