At a certain point in the mines, gems start showing up, but all I seem to be able to do is break them. Am I missing something?
You mean the crystals in the ice cavern bit? I think they just act like hedges in that you don't need a pickaxe to get through them.
Exactly, so they really have no purpose? They look so expensive!

Question: Is it even worth heading to the station when a train pulls in? I've done it a few times and all I ever get is like, a couple of stones and maybe one or two coal if I'm lucky. Nothing drops that appears to be of value.
Tip: To get Refined Quartz, just put it in the furnace with coal. I had no idea you could do this and thought you could only get refined quartz from lucky drops in the mines. This makes it way easier to get a set of quality sprinklers going.
theres actually several types of trains, with different looks to them.. they can drop stone, wood, ores, coal.. all types of stuff really. and i believe theres a xmas train which might drop something special but i havent gotten to the train myself. Overall though.. not really worth it unless you're already close to the station, otherwise you're going to be to late for good drops anyways
