My Ever Evolving Top 10

My Top Ten

This is a list of no more than 10 games that I are my all time favorite.

I’m revisiting this list almost 10 years after I had originally created it. It was fascinating reading through what I had written about these games at that time, and how much of was still true today. I have basically stopped playing video games after I had last updated this list, I went through and did some re-ordering now that I have some hindsight ( I am a lot less passionate about Megaman than I was then). But Largely my favourite games have stayed the same. I am feeling an urge to start playing games again, so who knows maybe this list will look very different in another 10 years. 2020-04-13

  • I've had this list for a couple of years now and this games spot has gotten really weird. At one time it topped the list, a bit later it fell near the bottom, now it kinda hovers around the high-middle. It's a game that has gone through no less than 3 major iterations since I originally added it ,and it's hard to really call it the same game. I'm not nearly as fighting game crazy as I was 2 or 3 years ago but this game still holds a special place in my heart, vanilla street fighter 4 was the reason I got a ps3 and it got me back into gaming after a very long break. Super got me into fighting games in a way that I never was before. I got a fightstick; I watched fighting game streams multiple times a week; and was closely following what was happening in the FGC. I was playing street fighter, or watching street fighter stuff everyday during that period. The street fighter 4 family of games are easily the games I've sunk the most hours into, and all that coupled with my childhood obsession with street fighter I think this game will have a permanent spot on my list.

  • It may seem odd to you that Red/blue sits on this list. Gold and silver are better games, heart gold and soul silver are better than those. Well... nostalgia is a powerful thing. In every pokemon game I'm always thinking "man I wish these where the Gen I starters," or,"These gym leaders/elite four/legendaries/badguy group aren't nearly as cool as in red and blue.". Every new pokemon game I compare back to the originals, and it is never quite the same for me. What can I say, you gotta catch 'em all. Well the first 151 after that... eff it.

  • Now I know that this isn't exactly a popular opinion, but love this game. I have some nitpicks with the story and a couple of the environments. But when it comes down to it this game is able to give me something few other games can. It's hard to put my finger on what that is exactly, I'm not sure if it's the constant slow plodding character progression, the need to min max my everything, or the fact that there is always more to do, but I just.... love it.

  • This game is very good. It is crazy to me that a game released in 1998 is still the top of its tactical class, but what can I say it kicked tactical ass. The job system in final fantasy tactics is so well suited for a turn based strategy game. The way job classes unlock higher tier classes, then require you to explore different paths to try and find the most advanced classes is just masterful. Although, the game does have some flaws. You can built "best characters" that will lead to a lack of variety on your team. The game features a permadeath mechanic but no viable way of replacing your lost team members. The translation isn't the best, causing some scenes to be overly corny or nonsensical. However, this game is ,in my opinion, one of the best TRPG's out there.

  • This was a game I felt mixed about. Infamous 2 made huge improvements game-play wise over the first game. However, it lost something in the process. It lost its gritty, cheesy comic book feel and the unique presentation of the first game. In some ways Infamous 2 feels more like a partial reboot then sequel. It drops characters and important unresolved plot elements from the first game and goes in a totally different direction. However, its flaws are forgivable when stacked up against the great controls and legitimate fun that comes from exploring and finding collectibles.

  • Coming back to this list almost 10 years later, I noticed that this game was missing. I’m surprised that I didn’t have this in here because this game has always been a favourite of mine. I have put more hours into this game than I would like to admit and I remember every minute very fondly. (2020-04-13).

  • Man was this game something special. It's hard to say anything about Persona 4 that hasn't already been said. But what I will say is before I had played this game I thought I was done with JRPGs. However, after experiencing Persona 4 I was reminded of just how much I love um!

  • I am fully aware that this is an odd choice for a megaman game, it rarely even cracks most peoples top 10 megaman games, let alone a top 10 all time list. But This is the Megaman game I grew up playing, and this is the one I absolutely fell in love with. I'm a huge fan of all of the robot masters, yes even the super bizarre ones (yeah Toadman!). I feel this was the turning point of sorts in the series. It was the first game to have megaman "completed"(He had Rush, the slide, and now the charge). It also took the robot masters to a new level. I've always felt that there was a certain level of self awareness to the ridicules-ness (word?) of the robot masters, and it always blew my mind when people would harp on this game in-particular for introducing the really far out designs. I've always seen the creative tongue in cheek Robot masters as an asset to the series rather than a hindrance. Pharaohman and Skullman set the precedent for the really far out designs later on like sheepman or chargeman. Some hate megaman 4 for the silliness that it brought to the forefront and some people, people like me, love what it did for the series.

  • The franchise that almost wasn't. Without a doubt this is my favorite Nintendo franchise. It's funny because my top two favorite Nintendo franchises (Smash, and Mario Kart) seem to require a reverence for Nintendo. However I've never been a big Nintendo fan, like at all. Samus is cool, I'm more or less indifferent to Link, I actively dislike Mario as a character, but I love smash brothers. I guess it's a testament to the game that even though I'm only lukewarm on most of the charcters the package as a whole is so lovably, mind blowing.

  • This is one of those games; If you played it you get it, If you didn't... you missed out. Unfortunately its magic died with the PSX, but maybe one day we will see a proper revival of this franchise.
