GOTY 2012

Didn't play a ton of new games this year, so this is mostly a list of all the games that came out this year that I played from most enjoyed to least enjoyed.

List items

  • Assassin's Creed III's new free running, tree climbing and new assassin's guild techniques had me wondering how I had gone without those for 4 previous games. I also found Connor's story to be really compelling and now I am really interested in finding out what happens to Connor next (French Revolution?). Sure there were technical issues, the Desmond stuff was mostly bad (though I do want to know what happens next with that stuff as well) and not every new addition worked out, but overall I thought Assassin's Creed III was pretty successful.

  • (Not sure if this would technically count but since the games as a collection is new that was how I justified it.) Two great fighting games that made me remember a time when I was way into fighting games. Plus, the challenges kept me continuing to have reason to continue to play it even as a single player.

  • I wrote my first user review for Giant Bomb about this game. Basically the short version is loved the twist in the story at the end of game, flowmotion (which makes getting around alot better than in previous games) and that the combat is as fast and flashy as ever. Was mostly sold on the drop system and Dream Eaters but I still thought they got in the way at times. Mostly not the greatest Kingdom Hearts ever, but pretty good.

  • (Not sure if this would technically count but since the games as a collection is new that was how I justified it.) Jak & Daxter: the Precursor Legacy is one of my favorite games of all time and it looks amazing in HD. Want to play Jak II HD and Jak III HD but haven't gotten around to it. (I remember being ok with the change in direction but still preferring Jak & Daxter better.)

  • Anytime Harmonix appears to be making an update to Frequency/Amplitude I get excited. However, while Rock Band Blitz mostly had a good soundtrack, I never really understood how you can get better at the game, and I just kind of got bored and found myself rather be playing Rock Band 3. Plus, the PS3 community for that game died fast and without friends constantly issuing challenges the game gets old fast. Disappointing all around.

  • (Not sure if this would technically count but since I am talking about the PS3 release and the game is new to me that was how I justified it.) Nights into Dreams is hyped up as one of the greatest games ever. So having never played it before, I thought I would check it out on PS3. It is just really hard to control and maybe was amazing in its day, but I think it was a little overhyped.
