Red Steel 2: You Will Be Missed

No Caption Provided

Going into Red Steel 2, I was excited. I had never played the first one so I don’t have anything to base it on but the look and combat all seemed very intriguing. After booting it up, I was very pleased. The opening sequences were very great, albeit hampered by terrible load times. The load times happen by your character just staring at a door, waiting for it to open. It breaks the immersion quickly and makes you want to yell at your TV screen.

Combat was one of the most stand-out things at last year’s Nintendo E3 Press Conference. It looked fluid and beautiful. For the most part, the game lives up to that. But there’s times when I found myself just shaking my arm furiously trying to swing the sword to no avail. And having to swing harder to do a more powerful attack seemed like a bad idea. It’s not that it’s necessarily broken or anything, it’s just that the combat is so hectic and crazy, there’ s no time to stop and try and throw your arm back even further to do a harder attack.

Thankfully, Red Steel 2 does Wii Motion Plus correctly. As I mentioned, the sword attacking can be a bit frustrating but blocking and doing finishers is very responsive and looks great. Your character moves like the cowboy-ninja he is. Your character and the story (to where I got) was not good. I respect the ridiculousness of it all and I think it was an awesome environment to play in, but the story itself was very bland and uninteresting.

The entire game has a very Borderlands feel to it. The cell-shaded art style and the crazy, sometimes randomly yelling enemies are part of Red Steel’s appeal. Things explode very well and the cut-scenes and Quick Time Events that happen during the cut-scenes are by far the best I have ever seen in a Wii game. It looks like you’re playing a 360/PS3 game at times.

You have a few hub worlds in Red Steel 2 which might seem OK but when some power-ups you want are at one hub world and you’re at the other hub, it can be a nuisance. It is an “open-world” game which means you can possibly go back to the other place but it’s so frustrating to navigate the area that you’re mostly never going to not go where the waypoint tells you. I said it was an open-world game, I use that term very lightly. Even if you did find out the proper ways to navigate the map, you sadly find out that the only reason it takes so long to get over to the opposite side of the map is because of the frustrating loading.

If you haven’t picked up the hints I have dropped, I did not finish Red Steel 2. And here’s why: I was cruising along in the game, having some fun, and I hit a point where it told me to go back to one of my hub worlds, I went back, no missions were available. I thought “Maybe if I do some side missions, it’ll let me advance.” So I navigated my way through the awfully frustrating and confusing map, finished the side quests and it still didn’t let me do anything. I was then convinced the game bugged on me. Since I had been enjoying the game, I decided to take yet another trip around the map, checking every corner (I actually fount a girl crying in some water-well. And I couldn’t save her. That was a bit odd… and cool), visiting every spot I could, still no mission. So, I turned the game off. Knowing I would never be able to play what, at that point, seemed like quite a fun and promising game. Very sad our time had to end that way, Red Steel 2. We could’ve been great together.

NOTE: This will not be posted as a review as I do not think I got far enough into the game to give a final opinion on all the content fount inside Red Steel 2.

What'cha Been Doing Pt. 14: Cloudy With A Chance Of Darksiders

 THIS WEEK
I'm back. Did you miss me? Nope. Well, fuck you too
Darksiders
TV
Movies happened. I saw them with my eyes

Darksiders

I went into Darksiders with little, to no excitement which may have helped me in the end. In Darksiders, you play as War, one of the four Horseman of the Apocalypse on his quest to...do...something. The explanation of all the story is really poor; which I think is similar to the story itself. It all feels bland which is quite a disappointment as I think having a good game with a good religious story could be very intriguing. Throughout the game, Mark Hamill follows you around as a creepy escort. His character is forgettable and odd. Sometimes he seems like a nebbish, weak character and sometimes he acts like he's strong, tough, and controls everything. In the end, he, as well as almost every other character (Besides War and Samael, who is pretty much the devil. Great voice work for both), is under-utilized and not very good.

You'd think Darksiders is a straight up, combat focused game. You'd be wrong. The combat, in the first 5 or so hours at least, is incredibly repetitive. Later on as you buy new combos and new weapons, it becomes a bit more interesting but never does become better than the environmental puzzles. I admittedly, have some problems with them, such as trying to throw a bomb through a small space is so damn tough, not because you have to be accurate but because the bomb sticks to thin air! It's not sticking to the sides, it's just hanging in the air! BITCH. Anyways, the puzzles are fun and really hurt your head in a good way. They're great at slowing stuff down and making you just sit back for a second and survey the entire level.

I'm playing the Xbox 360 version of Darksiders which is, well known, as the worst version of the two. There is points where it looks great but many points where it just goes crazy with screen-tearing. I did also play the PS3 version and I can vouch for the fact that it's better than the Xbox 360 one. I needed me some achievements. I don't know what it is about Darksiders but I secretly love it. Through all my frustrations and loud yelling, I keep going back and keep having fun. A definite rent for everyone and buy for anyone interested

Left 4 Dead 2

The obvious thing everyone has heard at this point is that Left 4 Dead 2 is more Left 4 Dead, and while that is true, it doesn't change the fact that Left 4 Dead 2 is fucking awesome. Sure, the AI is really bad. Your friendly AI pretty much stands around and does the dumbest things possible in tense situations and I've had times where zombies would run right by me and start smashing directly into a wall. But when there is this many damn enemies flying at you, the one or two zombies that have busted AI seems more like something to be happy about. The four new survivors are...eh. I'm not really a fan of any, Ellis is a funny stereo-type. Everyone else was just...there. Nothing can replace my Bill and Louis. Ever.

The thing that made Left 4 Dead 1 stand out in my eyes were those tense moments when maybe you hear a Witch crying and you have to be very quiet and soft-walking or when a Tank is just going hog-shit crazy on you. Those are back and adding the Charger Special Infected made it worse...in the best way. There are many times when you'll turn a corner, see a Charger and near piss yourself as he throws his head into you, pushing you backwards. Left 4 Dead 2 is a solid and comfortable buy for absolutely anyone and everyone who enjoyed the first. If you didn't... you might want to skip this.

Demon's Souls

Admittedly, I won't be able to talk to much about this game nor give it a solid Rent, Buy, Pass rating as I didn't play enough. If I was going to, I'd say buy. Because I

loved what I played of the game. The reason I won't play more is because I noticed that this game is a game I need to own and right now, I have so many games to play, I just don't have time for it. One thing that really sucked me in is the combat. It's so damn simple while being very tense and fun each time you hit a battle.

The Saboteur

I almost always go into games hoping they will be great, but never more-so have I wished that then when I went into The Saboteur. Pandemic was an amazing studio that had a few rough patches and in the end, those unfortunate mis-steps, killed them. It is great and fitting that they went out with a game like The Saboteur. Not only is it ridiculous and filled with explosions, most importantly, it's damn fun. Saying that doesn't mean The Saboteur is perfect, it's far from it. It could have benefited so much from a few more months in development but the product I got was still very enjoyable. The most noticeable factor of the game is the look, it looks exceptional. The in-engine cutscenes are really ugly and janky looking but when the game is playing, it's beautiful with only a few frame-rate drops thrown in here and there. The art style is just great. While I've watched the whole 'Turn this environment from one color to another' thing quite a bit, never has it been as good as this. When it happens, you feel like you actually freed the citizens and done them a solid. That is, until you go outside and run them all over.

I'm kissing the games dick a lot but it has it's faults. The hand-to-hand combat is, in one word, terrible. It looks bad, controls very strange, and is not fun to do. The platforming has neat ideas like having the things you can grab onto glow, which is very helpful, but having to constantly tap A was something that they should've changed to the Assassins Creed formula where you just hold up and go; there's certain points where you'll feel stuck, also. It's all just awkward. The story progression on the other hand,  is simply magnificent. The story in general was great, it was contrived and crazy, yes. But that's exactly what I wanted from this game. The ending was one of the best this year, it was so...gratifying. The Saboteur has it's hitches like many games but is so fun and exciting that I can't help but love it and tell you to buy it.

A Boy and His Blob

I never played the original A Boy and His Blob and going into this the only real thing drawing me in was the impressive art style, what lay beneath all that was a surprisingly fun game. The platforming combined with using your blob to transform into different things is very interesting and they manage to pull it off quite smoothly with the only real annoyance being the controls. Flipping up the radial menu, selecting what bean (which transforms your blob into something) then aiming where to throw it feels clunky. And it could've benefited by taking out some of the ways you can change then mapping it straight to the D-Pad. There's no real story to A Boy and His Blob. It just starts out with you and the blob meeting...then doing levels.

A Boy and His Blob is a simple game. There's not many buttons and the story is non-existent. I really liked that, actually. It felt so incredibly relaxing not having to worry about an over-arching story and just being able to run through levels. The enemies in A Boy and His Blob are...blobs. Black blobs (racist). You die in one shot (or touch from an animal) which would be frustrating but the checkpoint system in the game is so forgiving that you'll more than likely start around 30 seconds from where you died. A Boy and His Blob is an impressive game, it looks great and the only real problems with it are the controls and after you're about 2 hours into the game, it doesn't feel like there is much left to do beside play a level that looks completely identical to the one you just played about 30 minutes ago.

Pixel Junk Shooter
No Caption Provided

I've never played a Pixel Junk game before and this game seemed like the perfect one for me to enter on. It looks great, it's very simple, and it's just damn fun. The "fluid dynamics" are such a great, unique concept that is performed beautifully and doesn't just look nice, plays a significant part in the game. The levels are set levels which will usually have a big piece of rock, which you shoot out, blocking some kind of lava or water. Once you shoot that out, the ridiculous physics of this game comes into play and the fluid goes everywhere.

Unlike A Boy and His Blob, Pixel Junk Shooter seems to kind of throw a story in there, you'll capture little dudes who will sometimes pop up into a speech bubble and tell you about his/her crew going ape-shit and deserting the person. Adding a story to the game was...dumb. It serves no point and isn't intriguing whatsoever, although honestly, I don't think it was supposed to be. Pixel Junk Shooter is fine game (did I mention it looks good?) and for 10 dollars you'd be a crazy-man not to pick this up. Buy.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

No Caption Provided
At the beginning of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, they tell you "This game plays you as much as you play it" and it's correct. It's incredibly immersive. Using the wiimote for things like the flashlight and hearing people on the cell phone works very well and sucks you in deep. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is one of the best looking games I've seen on the Wii and the while there isn't much variety in the enemies, they will freak you the shit out no matter what. The decision to not have guns or weapons in the game was a great one and makes the game feel like a real "Survival Horror Game"

At the end of certain sequences in the game you'll run into a chase scene where you'll be getting chased by the crazy monster things in the game. During those sequences, the controls seem a little weird and will kind of spas out at random points but once you get over that, the chase scenes deliver an amazingly tense and fun point in a game filled with excitement. I was never a huge fan of the Silent Hill franchise and I never played the original Silent Hill. But I don't see how the original could top this in any way. Buy

What'cha Been Doing Pt. 10: Loads Of Games

Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader: Game Time

Going into Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader: Game Time, I had extremely low expectations, which is no shocker. If you hop directly into the main Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader game (where you come out, pick kids to help you and go up the ladder and try and win 1,000,000 dollars) you will be blown away...by how terrible it looks. I've saw a lot of ugly Wii games out there but this is definitely up there. Another thing is the voice work, it is horrid. Doing voice work, you need to make it sound like you all recorded the lines together in one booth, in this game, they took it to a brand new level where it seems like they all read each separate word in a different recording session. It is just...bad.

That's why first impressions are not everything! It's the underlying content in Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader: Game Time that makes it a surprisingly fun game to play with friends. The games you can play against friends (or computer if you so desire) are mostly really well done and just a blast to play. The one that was the best for me is the "Battle of Wits" mode. I described it to a friend as "Mario Kart Trivia", you climb a ladder, advancing a step when you answer one right, decreasing a step when you get one wrong, and along the way, you can earn powerups that can do things to your opponent like erase their question or just destroy their entire damn chalk-board (which features the question). Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader: Game Time is definitely shocking in a fact that I really did have fun with it, I would recommend a solid rent for anyone that has some friends or family around to play it with.

Academy of Champions: Soccer

I know I said I would talk about that this week but I have a bunch of shit to say about that game so expect a review by Sunday night.

What'cha Been Doing Pt. 9: Oldies but Goodies

This week!

Madworld
Punch Out!!
I struggle with writing about FIFA 10!
ALSO NO NEW OFFICE :((((( Sadface

Madworld

No Caption Provided
Madworld is a great idea, a brutal game with a colorful art direction, and it uses Motion Control in a crazy yet entertaining way. But after you get through about an hour of the game, that all fades away. The story is very bland, you're a guy named Jack (hardcore name) and you compete in this game that involve--alright I'm going to be honest, I've skipped every single cutscene besides the opening one. If you're coming to Madworld for a story, I'm sorry. Madworld has commentators that speak some very 'mature' dialogue. In the first 30 or so minutes, these guys are hilarious! Then you realize that they're going to repeat the same exact thing multiple times throughout a level and the worst part? They sometimes have conversations which is good in real commentary but when I just heard this conversation about 20 minutes ago, I don't want to hear it again.

The main draw to Madworld is obviously the brutal combat and so far, I enjoy it quite a bit. Sure, it can get extremely repetitive but I've learned to deal with that and just enjoy doing a uppercut then chainsaw through the stomach. At the end of every section (level) there is a  boss fight. Each boss fight does have some variety which is extremely lacking throughout most of this game but the problem with the boss fights is the variety they have is just different ways they attack, the way you kill them is still the same run up, chainsaw legs, wait for quick time event. The final quick time event to every boss is definitely brutal and satisfying but I really wanted something good to back all that up. At Madworlds cheap price, it's hard not to recommend it. Go pick it up and turn the volume down and get ready to skip cutscenes.

FIFA Soccer 10

The FIFA games are always very good and never seize to impress with it's in-depth Be a Pro mode and it's deep gameplay. That doesn't change with this
No Caption Provided
installment. I still found myself having excessive amounts of fun although I done most of this last year. The excitement you feel when you're doing a breakaway heading to the goalie is insurmountable. Man, sports games are hard to write about when you haven't done every single thing in the game so what I say is, buy for soccer fans, rent for non soccer fans.

Punch Out!!

Since I got my new fangled Wii system, I have a few (and I mean a FEW) good games to catch up on, you already learned about one of those games and the other is Punch Out!! I never played any of the original Punch Out!!'s (Do I really need to put 2 exclamation marks every time I write that? Me thinks no.) so this was all a new experience for me. The characters in Punch Out are...racist and extremely stereotypical. I'm not someone that gets easily offended by stuff like this but even I was drawn back a little when I saw Disco Kid and his Carlton dance. The main controls I am using is the Wiimote tilted to the side because A) I'm not a monster and B) that seems like the way to go. While the control scheme seems very simple (dodge with the d-pad, punch with the 1 and 2 buttons), the people you go up against will throw in things like you'll have to dodge at a certain time
No Caption Provided
to avoid being punched so it really puts you on the edge of your seat.

To beat the higher up opponents, it becomes extremely difficult to the point where you will have to go to the practice stage and just watch his moves and try and memorize them for about 10-15 minutes before actually stepping into the ring with him. That might sound annoying but I fount that it added to extreme relief and excitement once you finally beat that opponent. Punch Out!! (Shit, I just done it again) is an extremely satisfying game that is easy for me to recommend to everyone that owns a Wii.
