Best of 2010

My top games of 2010, as the year continues.

List items

  • One of the best RPGs I've ever played. Actually manages to do something beyond "I'm a delicate little angel who would never hurt anyone!" and "I'm the biggest asshole evil mother fucker who ever lived!" with it's choice system, making everything seem more meaningful as a result. Almost zero technical issues. Great replay value. Great graphics and voice acting. Seth Green has one of the best, and most surprising moments of gaming near the end.

  • Taking everything good about GTA IV, ditching everything bad about it, and putting it into a setting that's fresh and mostly untapped for games. This is the game we were all hoping Red Dead Revolver would be when it was first announced. Everything from the story, to the side quests, to the multiplayer, to the DLC was fantastic, and I can't wait to see more done with the series.

  • The (near) perfection of the rhythm game genre. Pro modes for all instruments add a new level of depth, as does harmonies for vocals, and keyboards are a great addition. And there's still no better way to drunkenly hang out with friends than around a set of plastic instruments.

  • So over the top and insane that it's impossible to love. Also one of the prettiest looking free roam games I've ever seen, and has enough content that it would take at least a hundred hours to even get close to 100%.

  • Another example of not messing with something that works, but also improving on the formula. The single player campaign alone was worth the price of admission, and the multiplayer matchmaking is done right, and done well.

  • An improvement over Fallout 3 in every way, but the bugs it launched with stop it from being higher on the list.

  • A return to the feel of Halo: CE, which may feel like a step backwards for some. But the addition of the space combat level, and removal of the Flood were both huge things for me.

  • Another God of War game. Does little to change the formula that made the previous two a success, but trying to fix something that's not broken isn't always a good idea anyway.

  • NEVER NOT EATING GHOSTS

  • This would be higher on the list if they had removed the feature from previous Civ games that makes it literally eat my life like I eat ghosts in Pac-Man CE DX.
