I am not a Star Trek fan. This can probably be accredited to a childhood experience. The reason I do not enjoy water levels on computer games is because I drowned as Sonic at a young age and it terrified me. I don’t swim. I remember my father used to watch Star Trek. The one with Picard. Specifically, the one where Picard gets turned into a Borg. To me, as a 5 (ish?) year old, that was the scariest thing in the world. Captured by robots and turned into one. NO THANKS. That was the last time I ever payed it any mind.
Then came 2008 and with it a trailer. The trailer was just the camera panning over the Enterprise being built. For some, unexplained reason I was excited. It was a teaser of basically nothing, but it made me feel like it was something I would watch. Then came the news that Sylar was playing Spock. I was sold.
So I went to watch it on opening day (having received a message from a friend saying it was badass and Nimoy’s “cameo” was stunning). I went it with high expectations of something that would be visually mind-blowing, and full of dare devil space type action.
Let’s start with the story. Within the first 10 minutes I could tell that it was a time travel episode and that plot-wise, it may be a little dodgy, but after all, it was produced by JJ, what could anyone expect? As ashamed as I am to say it, I am a fan of Lost, so I can handle a little ridiculous. As I’ve said, I’m not a huge fan of the series, so I couldn’t tell you how accurate it is, but other than a few points, I was fairly happy with it.
Visually it didn’t disappoint, it was everything you could expect from a modern summer blockbuster. The ship looked beautiful, although we never really got the feel for how big it was like we did in that first teaser. All of the characters (I feel,) fit their roles. Especially Zachary Quinto who gives a worl class performance as Spock in probably the best cast role of this decade.
The action was good, the fights weren’t too long, the space battles seemed dooming and there was even a chase with some incredible space monster on a far off planet. So nothing too unexpected from a space film.
What I didn’t expect from this film was the humour, it was genuinely funny. Obviously some characters were only put in for comic relief but they worked well which isn’t always the case. There were references to the original Star Trek crew as well, which while not being a fan were recognisable enough for me to enjoy.
All in all, it was a brilliant film. One of the people I was with said that afterward he felt a little disappointed, but I can’t see how, it delivered more than your average action film and worked better than a lot of these remakes have done, so to him, I say BOO.
HOORAY STAR TREK.
(I am aware it’s been out for a month, I’ve been busy.)
