GOTY 2012

2012? 2012?!

It's hard for me to decide what kind of year 2012 was for gaming. There were quite a few great games that came out this year, but it's hard to say that this was another landmark year for gaming as a whole like the last couple of years have been. I really liked a bunch of the games that came out this year, but I didn't really play that many of them. I don't know; I guess it doesn't really matter.

Anyways, here are my favorite games from 2012.

List items

  • The Walking Dead is a revelation, plain and simple. I loved the time that I spent with this game. I love the characters, characterization and the interaction and conflict between these characters. The creation of great characters in a video game is still a pretty rare thing; so that makes the job that Telltale did even more astounding. I love this game and I can't really say much else other than that.

  • I've never played an XCOM game before and after playing Enemy Unknown, I still probably won't... because I've already played the best in the series. I'm not too interested in most turn-based strategy games: but building your team in the XCOM base and out on the battlefield really grabbed me and never let me go, even after my first play-through.

  • From the great first person stealth action to the fantastic water-coloured art style, Dishonored really delivered for me. I really liked Deus Ex: Human Revolution when I played it last year, and Dishonored feels like a major advancement on some of what that game was trying to do. The world was cool and the stealth action was near perfect. Dishonored was fun, and I plan on going back to it when I get a chance to try a chaotic play-through.

  • The Witcher 2 is the best action roleplaying game that I played this year. I love the world of the Witcher, and I really liked the characters that inhabit that world. Even though it was fairly difficult at the beginning for me (the combat that is), I found the gameplay to be very rewarding and intuitive. The Witcher 2 was great and I should probably start another playthrough sometime soon.

  • I've never been one to enjoy stealth games. Other than the Splinter Cell series, I don't think I have played an actual stealth game. So to say, Mark of the Ninja goes places few stealth games can, is an understatement. Mark of the Ninja is a very accessible game. It gives the player all the information that they need, while not frustrating them like most stealth games. Mark of the Ninja was a real surprise for me this year, and I'm glad that I played it.

  • Pokemon Conquest, like Mark of the Ninja and Hotline Miami, was a real surprise for me. I had pretty much put my DS into storage at this point. I haven't really played a Pokemon game, since I played a couple hours of Soul Silver. Pokemon Conquest finally brings something new and interesting to the Pokemon series. The turn-based strategy system that the game uses is fantastic and fun; and building your army to take on the forces of Nobunaga is exhilarating. This is probably my biggest surprise of the year. Gotta catch em all!

  • Mass Effect 3 definitely isn't perfect. It's not as great as the second game was but I still thought it was pretty great. The combat was much better and I actually really liked the multiplayer. No matter what many people (including myself) thought of the ending, ME3 is still pretty great.

  • Dat music. Dat combat. Dat aesthetic. Dat story. Dat's all I really have to say about Hotline Miami. Everybody should play this one.

  • I'm not entirely sure this one should be on my list. I still haven't finished the main game (am currently 50 hours in) but I might as well put it on, because those 50 hours were some of the best that I've had with a JRPG since Persona 4. Xenoblade is fantastic. The music, the gameplay, the character-building, the environments; all expertly crafted and gorgeous. For now that's all I have to say, until I finally get around to beating it.

  • This is a late entry to my list, but a most deserving one. I've never played a Scribblenauts game before, but after playing Unlimited I see that I was missing out. Creating objects using almost any word you can think... it's a wonder why I haven't played these games before. I really liked the art style, the music and the puzzle-solving in this game. There really were "no limits" on the enjoyment I had with this game...
