10 Games I really liked from E3 2011

Well, E3 2011 has come and gone. While there weren't as many surprise announcements as I would like, there was still some pretty awesome stuff. Two new pieces of hardware is easy to get excited about, but there were a slew of really cool looking games at the show too. So, I guess here's a list of my Games of the Show. Now, granted, some of these were just trailers, but seeing as how I haven't been able to play any of these games, I hardly think that matters. For whatever reason, these are ten games that really wow'd me at the show.

List items

  • Dragon's Crown is my game of the show. Why exactly? I mean, we don't know that much about it yet aside from a brief trailer, but this game has a few things going for it. Firstly, it's a new Vanillaware game which means two things: it looks incredible, and it will probably be fun. Secondly, it's the first Vita game that really has me watering at the mouth for the system. Granted, I think it's also coming to PS3, but whatever.

There was also something magical about the reveal of this thing. People first spotted it for only a couple seconds in a sizzle reel of upcoming Vita games. Immediately the internet was a buzz with "Was that a Vanillaware game? I think it was!" and when we finally got more information about it, and a longer trailer, I think there was a collective cheer from many people.

As I mentioned, the game looks fantastic. And I know a few people have been very vocal about their disgust with the character designs (they're crazy people) I have to say it's one of my favorite parts. The exaggerated proportions are interesting and unique, and I think it's going to be something the game is really remembered for.

  • All Bethesda needed to do to get me excited about Skyrim was to announce the name of it at last year's Spike VGA awards, and I was on board. It doesn't hurt that the game is looking amazing. My love for this series is only partially responsible for why this game is so high on the list.

No, the real reason that Skyrim was my second favorite game from E3 was the awesome gameplay walkthroughs that were available. Todd Howard and the crew did a real bang-up job on getting people excited for the game by showing off it's strides and improvements over past Bethesda games. But, I lost my shit when the Dragons started showing up. And Todd Howard is just calmly telling millions of people that "Oh yeah, there's totally tons of Dragons in this game, and none of them are scripted." Mind blown.

  • It seems that the more I hear about Bioshock Infinite, the more excited I get about it. When it was first announced, I was a little unsure of it. Bioshock 2 kind of burned me (different team, I know) but Irrational was offering something totally new here. So after seeing the first round of media for it, my interest was piqued. Then as we gradually started to see more and more of the game I started to think "Wow, this could really be something."

I think it was a couple weeks ago, pre-E3 stuff, where I was hearing people talking about the crazy shit in this game where I went from interested to totally hyped.

The E3 trailer was certainly impressive, though I would have liked to see some more of it. Also, I'll say it, Elizabeth is pretty easy on the eyes.

  • Way down here is Mass Effect 3, not for lack of love for this series, or my hype for the conclusion for the trilogy, but because it's become somewhat of a known quantity. Yes, Mass Effect 3 remains one of, if not my most anticipated games, but I already know that.

The E3 stuff was cool, contrary to what people might tell you about it being a little too action heavy. I could have done without the gimmicky Kinect functionality, but aside from that, all signs point to groovy with ME3.

  • Aside from Assassin's Creed Revelations (which sadly did not make this list, mainly because I still cannot muster affection for the series) Uncharted 3 probably had the best trailer at E3. It was also the strongest first party offering at the show in my opinion.

Not only did it have a cool trailer, but the on stage demonstration was really cool too. Alongside Skyrim, Uncharted 3 is going to make for a really awesome November.

  • Now this is a pretty surprising turnabout. Going into E3, my expectations for Skyward Sword were tempered. I had my doubts about how it would control, and honestly didn't know that much about the game either. While I still may have some reservations about the controls, my interest in the game skyrocketed once I saw more of it at the show.

It looks like the game is going to have a really interesting story, and I'm liking what I'm seeing of the new characters (though the new villain is a bit wacky.) And it also looks like it's going to end up being the most visually appealing game on the Wii, really pushing the hardware to it's limits.

Impressions at the show lead me to believe that control fears might be unfounded, but I have a feeling I won't be satisfied until I have the game in my hands. Until then, very cool looking.

  • Things seem like they've been going pretty good for Lara lately. The last few Tomb Raider games were surprisingly enjoyable, and this game doesn't look like it's going to buck the trend. In fact it might raise the bar. Up until now I figured that Uncharted 3 pretty much had this series beat, but from what we've seen of the new game it might be on even ground again.

Despite some moaning about... well, Lara's moaning, I found the on stage demonstration at Microsoft's conference to be of the very few things they had going for them. It left a strong impression, and I can't wait to check this game out. Also really like the Lara redesign, which almost makes her... attractive?

  • Boy, with Uncharted 3 and Arkham city it's feeling very 2009 up in here. That's a good thing though, since both games are looking fantastic. Arkham City is actually looking like a major improvement over Asylum, which I thought was great, but man... with all the things they've added? I'm super pumped.

I don't necessarily need an open world to roam around in, in fact I'm a little sick of it at this point, but the way it looks like they're handling it in this game makes me feel like it'll turn out really cool. Also, Batman's mobility is outstanding. It's one of my biggest problems with open world games, they can't seem to get moving around right in a lot of them. But seeing Batman zipping and gliding around is awesome.

    Also. Catwoman!

  • This game went from being "Aww, you mean it's NOT a new Breath of Fire game?" to being "Holy shit, they might actually make a Monster Hunter game I like". That pretty much says it all. I've always wanted to get into Monster Hunter, but always get hung up on something. From what I've seen of Dragon's Dogma, it looks like it's offering a lot of what's cool about Monster Hunter, and "fixing" the things I don't like about the series that much.

Granted, it could use to look a bit less generic, okay, a lot less generic, but it also looks incredibly fun.

  • Ah... okay, this is a bit weird, isn't it guys? I remember thinking, nay, saying out loud "THEY TOOK OUT THE PORTALS? HAHA, WAY TO GO" or something to that effect, quickly writing Prey 2 off as being another generic shooter. Well, looks like I have to eat some crow on that. Game is looking pretty sweet.

It's true, I'm suffering from shooter fatigue, but when you present a game with unique ideas like this, make it look like it'll have a story I actually care about, and perhaps most importantly - don't center it around a fucking war - and you have my attention.
