This is a Nintendo tablet. It's a backdoor console into ever mom and pop that wants to get a cheap tablet for their kids to play angry birds on except the craze isn't angry birds anymore it's Pokemon Go. If Nintendo does this right this is a new Wii.
They might not execute right and I may be stupid but let me explain my thinking:
So the controller bits detach right and the screen could likely be a touchscreen right? That's literally a smart tablet. Sure it wouldn't have anywhere close to the app library of even a windows phone but there are two ways of countering that.
1. They build up internal staff dedicated to mobile, which they've started doing thanks to Pokemon Go's success, who focuses on essential apps most often used, giving them a Nintendo IP coating, and then rely on indie app developers too be excited to put software on a Nintendo device. That last bit might sound presumptuous and it wouldn't be a lot of people but this phenomenon has happened with the WiiU and 3DS receiving some indie games first before more audience rich consoles entirely because of the developer's nostalgia. That's not a lot but it might be enough to avoid the laughable launch status of the Windows phone which could provide enough momentum to get going.
2. They have an android emulator or the OS is a heavy permutation on android that can still run android software and apps. Either one would require a good relationship with Google and Pokemon Go indicates that are at the very least on speaking terms.
It would be hard but if they play it right they could sell the thing not just as a console but as a tablet. When Nintendo said they wanted to use their apps to transition people to console games I didn't think their strategy was to magic your tablet into a console but they might be doing exactly that.
The controller bits detaching also means they can innovate controls or add weird control stuff on a per game basis. You know how some games come with an add on? Like a rumble pack or ddr mat? Now you can pack in a controller bit that changes the controls entirely. You could sell a flight sim that comes with a every button needed for it. You could sell a game that needs fifty new buttons by just packaging new controller replacements in with the game.
If they play this right Nintendo won't be trapped in the handheld space with Mobile looming over them Mobile will be trapped in their with them! If they play this right and there's no indication of how this will get executed. VitaTV should have been a slam dunk and the default roku type device but Sony didn't even try and fell flat on their faces. This could go either way but the potential is amazing.
