Personal Favorite Games

Yeah, real creative. I more so just wanted to try out this "list" thing I've heard almost nothing about. People like making lists, it seems. And on a gaming site, it seems only appropriate to point out what games have warmed the heart over my years on this Earth.

Now, this is not to say that I feel these are the best games ever made. Although I would rank some of them up there, these are just the games that I have enjoyed the most since I got my first game console (which was a SEGA Genesis, if you're wondering) at the tender age of however old I was.

List items

  • This is probably the first game that ever monopolized my time. I remember a time, before the alcohol took most of my memories away, where I would come home from school and plant myself in front of the TV to play this game. For hours. Multiple playthroughs in a sitting. To this day, I still find myself going back to it.

  • I remember the hype leading up to this game. The fact that I always seemed to grasp leading up to it's release was the word count. Although not the first game where story seemed to be the draw for me, the sheer volume of story in this excited 11 year-old me.

  • I loved the first Resident Evil, but this is the one I played first. Yes, the Resident Evil franchise has staggered, and some would argue is near death, in recent years; but this game was fantastic upon release.

  • I was never a Nintendo child. My first Nintendo console that wasn't a handheld was the GameCube, so this was my first foray in to the world of Final Fantasy. I still revisit this one from time to time, and enjoy it thoroughly without a sense of nostalgia. It may not be the greatest RPG of all time, but it's one of them. This was the first game that felt like it had a grander sense of story than I had ever experienced before, and I often find myself wishing some of the elements of this game had carried over into the following iterations.

  • I love video games. I love film. This is the most cinematic game I've ever played, and in the right way. Instead of making me do cool things via QTEs, this game threw you in to the mix. Trying to fight through a wave of bad guys while in a building that is collapsing, and not having to watch it? Great.

  • Hands down one of the best, most atmospheric horror games ever. The story in this game is what I wanted the movies to be, but I'm kind of glad they side-stepped it. This was smart writing, even if the dialogue and voice-acting was horrendous (or on par with horror games of the time). Only Fatal Frame 2 has ever scared me more than this game did.

  • Succeeded in fixing every problem I had with the first game. There was enough interesting content in this game to make me do everything that I could when playing through it.

  • Still may hold the title for most fun I have had in a sandbox game. Much like every other GTA title I played before and after, I rarely moved the story past the point of having the whole map at my disposal. From there it was all about flying shit in to other shit.

  • An almost perfect sequel to a flawed, yet respectable game. It raised the bar so high that Mass Effect 3, even with some improvements, couldn't come close to matching it. Who would have thought scanning planets would be so fun?

  • Don't get me wrong, the first one was great. But the second one is where the real potential of the series started to shine through. It was softer, and lighter, and a blast to play.
