Portal 2 or Ryse.

None of them are bad games (Portal 2 was good but always felt a little "off" to me) but they were disappointing as the last story-driven singleplayer games from once great studios before they disappeared into VR/multiplayer insignificance (from my POV). And no I will most likely not play HL: Alyx.

Thank god indie studios (and to some extent Bethesda with Doom/Wolfenstein) picked up the slack for PC singleplayer games over the last part of the decade.

This might sound condescending but most of the mechanics are inspired by astronomy and physics and it's totally fair if that doesn't interest/grab some people.

The concepts for the mechanics are not all totally new in 2019 but they're combined and gated in such a creative way to make this anything but a typical "walking simulator" breadcrumb collector. Danny O'Dwyer's Noclip has just released a "making of" video that explains some of the concepts origin in detail (I haven't seen all of it yet).

I think I'm almost at the ending because I've connected all of the visible breadcrumbs even though I usually suck at puzzle games. As a total space nerd (I got to most of the planets in Kerbal and actually successfully returned from Duna) I share the appreciation of this game. I'm not a big fan of 3D platforming (especially from first-person POV) but I love flying spaceships and I'm really impressed with the dynamic world (hint: some environments change based on their location through the cycle).

Video game coverage went to a weird place (and not necessarily for the better) over the last decade due to Twitch, Youtube and Twitter. It's probably going to get even weirder but Giant Bomb has always felt like it's been grounded (even after the buyout) due to their relationships with actual developers (and not just PR) while still being up front about that.

I can tolerate them being dicks and giving opinions I don't like (and I agree that most of the time any kind of exposure is better than none) but I hope I can trust that Jeff and the crew don't need to be forced to give disclaimers about sponsors, personal relations etc.

My gaming interests are a little more nerdy and not so much anime/wrestling/multiplayer so my opinion doesn't matter much. I just hope they can stay true to Jeff's original vision even though times have changed for game developers as well. Also I wonder if there is a next step to coverage after video and podcasts because it seems like there are so many options today for better or worse compared to when they started.

It's probably been 10 years since I played but I think EVE University is still kicking around. Try to join their chat ingame and you should find lots of help there.

I'm not sure any of the Giant Bomb staff ever played EVE except maybe Patrick and Drew. They mostly play "left-trigger, right-trigger" console games :)

Massive PvP battles is the key selling point for EVE though so you if you just want to mine and chill you might have more fun with singleplayer games like the X3/X4 series, Starpoint Gemini 2 or Rebel Galaxy (Outlaw).

Great job putting this together!

I wish there were enough written reviews this year that a review data dump might be interesting because the one I read once upon a time was quite informative. Maybe it could be interesting to do one for the decade? "wink wink, nudge nudge"

Got redirected today in a chromium-based browser from these two URL's on load (as far as I recall because I had spawned a couple tabs):

  • https://www.giantbomb.com/forums/

to a globaltalentstrategies.top domain site with a "prize" survey.

I haven't paid for premium in a long while but still kind of a bummer that less "savvy" people might get hooked by this. Plus I only filter malware and social media domains because there should be some room for internet advertisement IMO but stuff like this makes me question that.

That level in Alan Wake where you visit the farm for the two members of the fictional band Old Gods of Asgard features a lot of Viking assets.

I'm going to check out the games that got mentioned.

I don't post there but the forums at quartertothree

https://forum.quartertothree.com/c/movies

are a mellow place to lurk around and catch up on the buzz about new movies for me. Plus the owner (Tom Chick) does movie podcasts regularly. Give him a chance if you don't like his game reviews (they can be hit and miss) because he's pretty good at talking movies.

Why was Dougie Jones wearing the ring from the movie (the green one with the owl symbol)?

RedLetterMedia suggested in their Re:view of the FWWM movie that the ring served as protection for Laura against being possessed by Bob (so she was killed instead) but that doesn't fit with Bob/Cooper's creation wearing the ring?
