A decent experience in dire need of tightening 0

The ShortPros- Absolutely gorgeous graphics- The music, while not the usual Castlevania fare, is still fantastic- Finally a 3D Castlevania game that isn't utter garbage- Patrick Stewart narrates and voices a character in the game- Some of the bosses, the Butcher and Grave Digger especially, are fantastic- Did I mention this game looks good? It looks really good- Enemies are difficult even from the beginning and require skill and tactics to defeat- When you are fully equipped with all the moves, ...

The best JRPG on the PS2. Yes, really. 0

The ShortPros- Takes every complaint I had about Persona 3: FES and fixes it- Tons of really fantastic voice acting throughout- Has probably the most distinct, uniform art style of any game I've played- Speaking of style, this game has it in buckets: music, graphics, character, etc.- Same unique, deep turn-based combat as Persona 3: FES- Tons more dungeons, and each has a unique and entertaining theme- Every side character is extremely interesting and entertaining- Music is much improved: still ...

A decent RPG that hasn't aged gracefully 0

The ShortPros- Fun, complex combat system- Ability to change between normal heroes and their "Dragoon" form- Multiple battle songs that change throughout the game- Lots of party members with unique combos and abilities- Music is actually pretty good- Really good looking CG cutscenes- Decent in-game graphics for the PS1 eraCons- Story is absurd and idiotic- While the game does have some voice acting, it is all terrible- Load times, especially for battles, are atrocious- Extremely linear- Your bes...

One of the freshest JRPGs I've ever played 0

The ShortPros- Essentially a mix between an excellent turn-based JRPG, a high school dating sim, and Pokemon.- Lots of interesting characters with deep and compelling backstories- Tons of fun (and funny) events and activities- As much a time management sim as an RPG- Also has practically a "breeding" game with regards to merging Personas- Extremely addicting, very easy to sink 100+ hours into- Music has a very unique style and flavor to it (very Jpop)- JRPG battles are difficult, complex, and in...

A game that, unfortunately, hasn't aged gracefully. 0

The ShortPros- Beautiful, hand-drawn graphics and animations- Excellent midi music- Play as two different characters, a first (and last) for the series- Refined controls from the previous games make it much easier to pick up and play- Puzzles are the best crafted in the series, many with multiple options- Excellently diverse side characters- Areas you visit are fun, unique, and extremely varied- Final adventure game in what is considered one of the best adventure game series of all time- Full vo...

A game that ended an era 0

The ShortPros- Funny, bizarre story by Al Lowe of Leisure Suit Larry fame- Hand-drawn art and animation looks good, made by an animator who later quit Sierra to work at what is now Pixar- Voice acting is well done throughout- Sidekick "Boogle" adds some flavor to interesting puzzles- Weird, hilarious characters. Nobody in this world is freaking normal.- Travel into the planet through five unique worlds- Standard adventure-game fare at a time when the genre was coming to an endCons- Some puzzles ...

After sixteen years, it is still my favorite strategy game 0

The ShortPros- Hybrid turn based / real time strategy- Part country sim, part resource management sim, part siege sim, and more- Music is fantastic- Battle against AI or over "Modem Network" (works on modern networks, too)- Tons of scenarios, adding the "Siege Pack" throws even more into the mix- Lots of unit types, each with their own strengths and weaknesses- AI opponents are fully voiced and say some pretty great stuffCons- After a few games you can figure out exactly how the AI works- "Autoc...

Guilty pleasure can only go so far 0

The ShortPros- Lots of totally over the top kills- Stealth sections where you play as the dog, Shadow- Can command your dog to go all feral on dudes- Cover based shooting is satisfying, slow-mos for headshots- Story is so completely stupid it's hilariousCons- Looks terrible- Controls are just barely passable; Gears of War this ain't- Voice acting and story are awful, so if you hate B-Movies you will hate this- Single player is short but feels way too long- Kills are awesome but there are only ab...

One of the best simulation games ever made 0

The ShortPros- An expansive theme park sim- Build shops and rides, hire entertainers and handymen, and much more- Actually build your own coasters in "design" mode- Dozens of missions (more with expansions)- Loads of coaster types and rides- Insanely addictingCons- The formula for building a good coaster can be difficult to figure out- Easy to "cheat" your way through the game with cheap exploits- Ride depreciation is a bit unrealistic- Micromanagement eventually gets to insane levels on the big...

Solid shooting, but the rest falls flat 0

The ShortPros- All new single player set during Halo 2 but on earth- Play as somebody other than Master Chief (finally)- Handful of new weapons- New Firefight mode- Story is a very different approach than the other Halo games- Nathan Fillion does a voice in it- Includes a disc for the complete Halo 3 multiplayer experienceCons- Story is stale and doesn't pack promised emotional punch- Firefight is friends only; no open matchmaking- Not much different from Halo 3- While it's nice to have a Halo 3...

One of the weirdest games ever 0

The ShortPros- Goofy, zany platformer- Excellent animations and art design- Lots of crazy levels with tons of variety- Launch cowsCons- Some spotty and floaty controls- Water level is stupid difficult- SNES version is missing a level that was in the Genesis versionCOW LAUNCHEDThe LongEarthworm Jim is the 90s. Sets this generation's standard for both horror and action games 0

The ShortPros- Perfect blend of action/horror- Grisly violence and gore ramp the tension up to insane levels- Fantastic UI; everything is displayed in the game world. No HUD.- Sound design is exceptional- Unique method of dispatching enemies; "strategic dismemberment" rather than headshots- Graphics are gorgeous and the steller art design leads to some true monstrosities- Story is interesting and reminded me of Alien- Perfect length single-player- Controls on 360 work like a dreamCons- Lots of t...

A lovely story that is a joy to experience 0

The ShortPros- Absolutely beautiful soundtrack- Charming 16-bit "RPG" style graphics- Fantastic, emotionally riveting story- Lots of interesting plot twistsCons- Gameplay elements seem unnecessarily tacked on- Walking from place to place can be boring and uninteresting- Very short (3-4 hours, no replay value)- Story is good but seems to back off just short of being magnificent- I can't decide if the ending is perfect or just mediocreTo The Moon is an extremely story driven experienceThe LongTo T...

A forgotten gem that reminded me of Mass Effect 0

The ShortPros- Compelling storyline- Superb soundtrack- Mix of Mass Effect and Greek mythology- Leveling up / skill trees proceed in a very unique way- Dedicate yourself to three gods, in both dialogue and fighting, and be rewarded appropriately- Fun combat; multiple weapon types to use- Voice acting is excellentCons- Very, very glitchy- Not as much combat as you'd think; mostly lots of dialogue- Not really any bosses to speak of- Can drag on at times- Feels like with just a little more polish i...

Two massive steps back for the genre 0

The ShortPros- Has "2112" by Rush in its entirety- Has "Wish" by Nine Inch Nails- Has "Uprising" by Muse- Returns to Guitar Hero "roots" with harder guitar partsCons- Does nothing to improve the Guitar Hero/Rock Band formula- No harmonies- Career mode where rockers turn to "beasts" is unbelievably stupid- Weak setlist that is completely all over the place- Good batch of discs shipped with unreadable errors; buying this game used is dangerous- Still has a poor selection of DLC- Incompatible with ...

Try as it might, RE5 can't fill the shoes of its predecessor 0

The ShortPros- Gorgeous graphics- Dark continuation of the Resident Evil franchise story- Co-op for the first time in the series- Option for duel-stick aiming- Roller-coaster of awesome setpieces and scenes- The perfect length: not too long or too short- Mercenaries mode has been improved and also has co-opCons- Co-op with AI is atrociously unfun- Takes all the "B-Movie" greatness of Resident Evil 4 and decides to be serious. Doesn't work.- Sparked a bunch of racial controversy- Everything that ...

A co-op, nostalgia-filled blast! 0

The ShortPros- Fast, fun four player defense game- Four unique classes with differing abilities- 8-Bit throwback style- Sticks to the retro theme with awful Engrish translations- Multiple levels of difficulty, including a survival mode- More goblins than you can shake a stick at- Only $3 on Xbox Live Indie GamesCons- Not a whole lot of depth- For the best experience you need four players- Harder difficulties are super toughThe Pig-ship comethThe LongProtect Me Knight is a game dedicated to being...

A flawed, immersive gem. 0

The ShortPros- Gritty, dark survival/shooting game set in Russia's subway system- Guns look appropriately makeshift and old based on the theme- Monsters are creepy- Lots of really cool ideas- Really plays the whole "struggling to survive" aspect better than most other games in the genre- Fantastic UI- Superb sound design, particularly in ambiant noises and voices- Visual theme is uniform and fantastic throughoutCons- Console versions are extremely glitchy, PC version is a little better but still...

At $5, this Zelda-esque rogue-like is a total sin to pass up 0

The ShortPros- Blend of Zelda, rogue-likes, and duel-stick shooters- Hundreds of unlockables: items, characters, power-ups, levels, bosses, and more- Dark, disgusting, and with a unique art style- Incredible soundtrack- Addicting and ideally suited for short bursts of gameplay- Only $5 on SteamCons- Can be incredibly difficult- Success is often based heavily on luck- Disturbing characters and themes might be too much for some- No gamepad support- Shooting is only four-directional rather than tru...

A fun shooter that does little to break the mold 0

The ShortPros- Two-player top down and side scrolling space shooter- Uses regular shooting and bombs ala Xevious- Has "State of the Art" and "High Resolution," according to the box- Lots of good powerups and secrets- Decent music- The cover is a picture of an angel dude with one shoulder pad holding a future space gunCons- Like every other space shooter on the NES- The whole "cross legged pink guy" thing on the side-scrolling stage is a little weird- Limited lives and continuesDARK, the world-ru...

This game is worth it for Jansen 0

The ShortPros- A JRPG from the original creators of Final Fantasy- Old school, turn based RPGs with several unique twists- A well crafted premise and story- Fantastic music by Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy's composer)- Caps level grinding so bosses stay challenging and fun- Unique skill learning for Immortals vs Mortals- 30+ hour adventure- Some genuinely touching moments in the story- High class voice work with a decent script- Has a female character that isn't some sort of healer or mage- There...

Square's first game in North America, and it's good! 0

The ShortPros- 3D Platformer on the NES- Created by Square (as in, the Final Fantasy guys)- Music by Nobuo Uematsu (aka, the Final Fantasy composer)- Eight worlds, but to quote my friend Davy "Nobody makes it past level 3!"- Easy to play, extremely difficult to master- If you press select and have red/green 3D glasses, you can play in REAL 3D!- Can pick it up for about $2-3Cons- Gets really difficult really fast- Some cheap deaths- Shooting enemies kind of sucks and takes away from the platformi...

Welcome to platformer hell 0

One of the biggest XBLA indie games of the year, Super Meat Boy is an exceptional example of difficult gameplay done perfect. It is easily a must-buy for the system. What did you love about the game? :- Perfect controls- Fantastic, 8-bit soundtrack- Funny nods to older game series- Dozens of hours of content (300+ levels, with more coming all the time)What did you hate about the game?- Exceptionally hard- Some saving glitches can nuke all your progress (these have since been patched)Retro levels ...

Whip out your Johnson and start firing blanks 0

One could argue Resident Evil 4 brought about the next-gen beginning of the third person shooter genre, and Gears of War solidified it as a solid action game.Shadows of the Damned is a third person shooter. You press a trigger to aim, you can dash around, and you have an assortment of weapons and you look over the shoulder. But it is completely different from any other third-person shooter you've played. Mostly because it's chock full of dick jokes.WARNING: This is a M rated game for lots of imm...

Despite some Kinect weirdness, Fruit Ninja is a blast 0

My life loves our iPod Touch, and I can't blame her. There's tons of games coming out for the thing, and when $5 is considered "pricey," I know the system is going to stay well within our price range.Fruit Ninja was a popular game I actually never bought, but I played the "Lite" version (essentially a demo). It costs $1 but even then I was too cheap to get it, gleaning enough satisfaction from the score-limited demo.Well, we picked up The Gunstringer today, because I will support literally every...

RPG light done right 0

Cursed Loot is the re-naming of the indie game Epic Dungeon, which I bought back during the "Indie Games Revolution" last year. For those who already guessed it: Yes, this is an Xbox Live Indie game, not an XBLA game or a retail release. I actually was on the fence buying Cursed Loot because I already had Epic Dungeon. Then I realized the game was a freaking doller and was being updated frequently, had tons of extra content, and I was being retarded. So I bought it, did a run-through, and now I'...

A charming, beautiful game that is saved by its co-op 0

This game comes with a story. My first entry into next-gen gaming was with the Xbox 360, and it happened a few months after I got married. When we picked up the system a Gamestop was having a "Buy 2 get 1 free" sale on all used games. So, in an attempt to pick up games to best justify our next-gen purchase, we bought Ninja Gaiden 2, Infinite Undiscovery, andEternal Sonata. Now, for those who want to know: Infinite Undiscovery is awful, and while there are plenty of fans of Ninja Gaiden, I never g...

A fantastic experience, if woefully short. 0

The ShortPros- Presented in only black and white with a charcoal dinge about it- Complex platformer/puzzler with clever puzzles- Creepy and quite terrifying at times- Builds a unique type of suspense often absent from other games- An excellent example of doing less with moreCons- Extremely short- Low replayability- Loses some of the suspense in the second half- Story is relatively nonexistantLimbo is a creepy game that isn't like anything you've played beforeThe LongThe premise behind Limbo is a...

Excellent on every level, Rayman is a delight 0

The ShortPros- Fantastic art design- Absolutely beautiful graphics and animations- Precise platforming control- 2-4 player co-op that is actually not frustrating- Amazing soundtrack- 60+ levels including secret and bonus levels- High replayability- Good difficulty curve; appeals to both beginners and the hardcore- Lots of characters, skins, and bonuses to unlock- Lots of variety in the levelsCons- The final level is freaking impossible- Only three unique character models for a four player game- ...

Great on paper, not as much in execution 0

The ShortPros- Visceral and bloody, hits feel heavy and register as such. Satisfying combat- One-on-one combat gets very complex and deep by the end- Takes ideas for many sources and combines them in a unique way- Above-average graphics, quick loading times- The water graphics look super snazzy- Open world viking game combined with an adventure game and a massive battle game- Surprisingly good stealth options- No penalty for death; simply respawns you at the warp point- Case sleeve is super shin...
