Games I have running on my netbook

The Samsung NC10 has an Intel N270 1.6 GHz, 1GB DDR2, a 160 GB HDD and the Intel GMA 950 128MB chipset. The display has a resolution of 1024x600 and the OS is Win XP 32 SP3. Mine has the memory upgraded to the maximum 2GB and I have an external USB powered DVD drive to install the disc games. Here are the games I have succesfully run on it.
 

I have found some modded drivers that should get a little more out of the GMA 950 and a tool ( GMABooster) that allows me to re-clock the GMA up to 400MHz. It's default speed is 166MHz to save power but is perfectly stable and fine thermally at the speed it was actually originally designed for. The tool can be used on the fly so any benefit can be seen immediately.

  • If you can get the installer to run (I couldn't) it should be as simple as running the patch on it and using Win 95/98 compatibility mode. Otherwise your best bet is to copy the Grimdata folder to the HDD, manually applying a zip file patch and running in compatibility mode. There are 3rd party launchers out there which allow you to play in a window but I have found stability problems with them.

  • Installs and runs flawlessly, doesn't even need compatibility modes or a No CD hack.

  • Run in DosBox via the D-Fend Reloaded frontend. A great puzzle game that you can return to each year when you've forgotten all the solutions. Freely available from <a href="http://www.thefoolsgold.com/downloads/index.htm">Cliff Johnson's site</a>.

  • Installed via Steam. Runs smoothly at full resolution even with bots. Using D3D, not tried any other methods.

    Not tried re-clocking the GMA, there's no need.

  • Needs a No CD hack but the lack of support for higher resolutions means it's way behind the vast upgrades that OpenTTD offers.

  • Original DOS version run via SCUMMVM. I need to find the later version which has the updated UI.

    Also running the Special Edition, runs at full res with the special effects on. However, choppy when the water effect is onscreen. GMA at 400MHz reduces this to make it more playable but is still noticable.

  • Has a 'Netbook' setting that simply turns off the whistles and bells. Ran really well in the first few levels but as you go deeper to busier locations it slows down. GMA Booster has a small but noticable effect. Going into a settings text file reveals distance clipping and no. of particle settings that I can fiddle with to improve performance. Not played with them too much.

  • Runs well at full res. Long loading times but I've run it off a 7200RPM drive before and it took ages then too. Couldn't get a working No CD sadly.

  • Runs fine, couldn't find a No CD to work with my version from thee Sold Out range.

  • Quite an old game so runs fine. Very low resolutions supported, may have to see if there are any patches/mods to make this game look better. No need for CD to be in as there is no protection.

  • Runs really well for the most part. A bit of slowdown when things get hectic but playable to the end.

  • Running at full res and with the full gfx effects there is horrendous slowdown. However, because of the scaling nature of the graphics you can run it at a low res and not really miss out much.

  • The CPU tends to momentarily bottleneck when using certain technologies. Flash and Java are common culprits and being written in Java, VVVVVV is no exception. I could try killing other apps, changing CPU priorities and even restrict VVVVVV to just one core and push all other processes onto the other. Nevertheless it only rarely posed a real problem and VVVVVV is completable.

  • Written in Macromedia it'll run on any modern Win platform.

  • The mouse pointer doesn't line up with where it actually interacts with in full screen. Otherwise, fine.

  • Both games on one DVD. The No CD hack I used to get past the protection appeared to work but later on it prompted for the disc, so I need the USB drive plugged in. Quite possibly the full install isn't really full. Other than that the only ill effect is that the game isn't alt-tab friendly. Returning to the game will present you with the background image corrupted, moving to another scene rectifies this so no real problem.

  • Not given it a stress test but it did take a while to build the world. Needed to change ini settings so it only updated changed parts of the screen as refreshing the whole thing each frame was a real lag.
