Hey All. So here's another late entry in my blog series that I am doing. Still trying to catch up but school won't let me and it sucks. I feel really guilty for having these up so late so let's hope that sometime in the near future i can get these done on time. But enough of my problems, let's get to the news. I think what i will do this week is focus on one company that made several major headlines during this week. Some of you may know where I am going with this. 
 

News

 

Activision Edition

 
So Activision made a couple of headlines this week that I think they should have the headline's for this whole week. So score another one for Activision. To start this, I will pick the biggest headline of this week. 
 

  • Kill Many Games
Sorry for the ugly headline. Anyway as it states Activision has killed many of it's upcoming games and franchises that were to hit this year. First off they cancelled 

the upcoming True Crime game. That game was to be set in Hong Kong and from what I have heard on several different podcasts, that game was not turning out so great. I was excited to at least see the game announced because I liked the previous games. They were not that bad I think. Another game they said would not come this year is a new Tony Hawk game and franchise. This is great news as the past few entries were not so great, especially the past two. Time off should do a game some good, but in Tony Hawk's case, it went horribly. But probably the biggest news of the week was the cancellation of the Guitar Hero Franchise. It's sad to see a pioneer in the franchise already see it's peak and downfall in less than a 10 year span, shorter than Tony Hawk's. Some could say that after Activision bought the Guitar Hero name, they drove it into the ground by releasing game after game after spin-off after game in two years. It was this that drove the music game genre into the ground as well, leading to poor sales of Rock Band 3 and DJ Hero 2 this past year and also the  cancellation  of the DJ Hero Franchise. If I can be honest for a minute, I loved the Guitar Hero games better than the Rock Band games. The songs might be better on Rock Band but I like GH's art style and early game presentation than the Rock Band games. And circles are better than rectangles. Now it's not to say that the games are cancelled but taking a long, much needed break and if we will see these games again down the road, who knows. So with that said, the people who are working on these games will work on news one's right? 
 

  • Massive Layoffs

WRONG! Activision has layed-off workers from Vicarious Visions and Freestyle Games. Vicarious Visions mostly worked on Activisions Wii and DS ports of its big games, including Guitar Hero, as well as the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance Franchise. Freestyle Games developed the DJ Hero Franchise. 
 

  • New Call of Duty Studio
Activision has announced that it has created a new studio in the form of Beachhead Studios. Beachhead Studios will oversee the creation of all things online in the Call of Duty Universe. Whether this is just New Map Packs for their new games or the long rumored Pay-to-Play Call of Duty service was not said. This studio is a good thing for Activision because it gives their CoD developers more time to focus on the disc-game and less time worrying about what they are going to make for the post-game. It is a good move for Activision to make this studio.

Some of the websites I visit while making the list to create the blog post YouTube videos often. I look at them and I like some and I had one to show to you but I this this one is better. This just might be a sign of things to come. My favorite part is the ending but just watch for yourself.
 
  
   
Phew, alright. I've been playing WAY more CoD Blops than I would like to. I mean I have two 360's, one in my room and one in my family room connected to the internet. I don't have a WiFi adapter and they are too expensive to buy one. So I choose to play CoD Blops online as opposed to the other games i can play in my room, like Dirt 2 and Deadrising. I know i should play those games but I don't. I think I'll try to play this week. My biggest concern is the saving. I have no Hard Drive for it and only 2 memory sticks (64 and 512). I'll try anyway. And since my friend is STILL fixing my PS3 from the YLoD, I have no time to play PS3 games, like finish Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood or the other games I bought on Black Friday. 
 
Well that's enough about me. I hope you enjoyed reading this blog as i enjoyed typing this until 1:30 in the morning Pacific time. If I have missed any news for this, please let me know. Hey All. Sorry for all the late blogs but i will try to catch up eventually. All the ideas are right in front of me, I just have to find the time to write them. Not much news going on for this week but let's see what we got.

Call of Duty: Black Ops First Strike DLC

 
Call of Duty: Black Ops' first wave of DLC has hit this week in the form of the First Strike DLC. As i have covered in previous blogs, this DLC map pack has four online multiplayer maps and a new zombie map. My little brother bought this pack with the leftover Microsoft Points he had from Christmas and I must say that the maps are not bad. My favorite, by far, has to be Stadium. I like the feeling of indoor close quarters on this map and there are a ton of places on this map to do that. You have the two buildings with the two balcony's, the workout room in the corner of the map, and of course the stadium itself. What I do not like about the map is that i cannot go on the ice rink. Very disappointed Treyarch. My least favorite map is Berlin Wall. I do not get what Treyarch was trying to do with this map. The two sides of the wall with the buildings are unoriginal and the No Mans Land in the middle is a dumb idea. The other two maps, Kowloon and Discovery, are good maps. Kowloon has nice verticality to it but there are a lot of campers on this map and Discovery I like just a bit more that Berlin Wall because it feels different. The zombie map, Ascension, I have only played once and for someone who does not play zombies on a regular basis, playing with a friend who does made this map a hell of a lot easier. The zombies here are harder to defeat that on Kino der Toten, the launch platforms are a nice getaway device, and starting off in black and white until you turn off the power was a brilliant idea. I feel like i have dragged on with this topic long enough so I will end by saying that $15 for 5 maps ($3 a map) is way too expensive to pay for a game that you will only play for one year but thats how Activision gets you. If you are having a difficult time figuring out if you wanna buy the maps, check out the Quick Look and TNT. 
 

Remakes Galore

 
Remakes are becoming a new thing in this buisness. With the success of the God of War Collection back in 2009, other studios have dug into their back catalog and are trying to see which of their old franchises they can bring back to life. The week started off with the announcement of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee would be getting a remake. Just Add Water, the people working on the PSN exclusive remake of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, will HDify (its a word now) the game but no systems or dates were given. Previously announced were the Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy HD Collection, featuring the Original Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory, and the Prince of Persia Classic Trilogy HD Collection, featuring The Sands of Time, Warrior Within, and The Two Thrones. Both of these collections from Ubisoft will come in Stereoscopic 3D on a single PS3 Blu-Ray disc for the price of $39.99. The week ended with a rumor that a Halo: Combat Evolved remake could be in the works. Joystiq ran the story, stating that it will feature new art assets, new refined controls, full 1080p resolution, 3D, and online co-op. The game is said to release in the holiday season, marking the 10-year anniversary of the game. My thoughts on remakes in general are they are an awesome idea. They give a chance to gamers who missed out on the games that they might have missed out on last generation. With the God of War Collection, God of War III was coming out and I did not want to go into the game not know Kratos' story because I did not play them when they were on the PS2 because i was not into those games then. It gave me a chance to see Kratos' story and not feel left out and with remake's I can play the original games in High Definition and not fell left out. I am looking forward to how these remakes turn out.

  • Treyarch's Community Manager Josh Olin released a ton of facts about Call of Duty: Black Ops since it's release in November. The numbers are astonishing.
  • New additions to DC Universe Online are happening in February featuring a cherub form of Metropolis and Catwoman.
  • Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds is getting a fight stick as well as an Xbox 360 exclusive fight pad.
  • Bulletstorm has gone gold. It will release on February 22, 2011.
  • KIllzone 3 is getting a Retro Map Pack for it's release on February 22. Details are on the PS Blog.
  • MTV Games has closed it's doors. My condolences to those affected.
  • Major Nelson has released the Top Xbox Live Games of 2010. Can you guess which game is #1?
  • New Power Rangers Game!! That is all.
  • THQ released some information on it's upcoming year, including a new Saints Row, WWE Online and Company of Heroes Online cancelled, and some interesting release windows.
  • Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Medal of Honor, and other games sell well for EA. NBA 2K11 also sells well for 2K Games.
  • New Games were announced this week including:
  1. Gunstringer from Twisted Pixel. Kinect game? Okay...
  2. Dark Souls, a sequel to Demon Souls. The first wasn't hard enough.

Video of the Week

 So this is a new part of the blog I am starting. With those "I fell bad that the blog is late" videos, I decided that since cool and funny videos happen every week that why not just post the best one I find and think is funny and show all of my readers. This week I'm sure everyone has seen by now.  
 

Duty Calls: The Calm Before the Storm

 
If you don't know the story, Epic Games released this a a parody to the most popular game this generation, Call of Duty. The game, Duty Calls: The Calm Before the Storm, is an actual downloadable game. It is a promotional item for their game, Bulletstorm. The marketing for this game has been over the top as seen in some of the Giant Bomb Mailbags, like this one and this one. There was also a Halo Parody but this piece of marketing material takes the cake. It probably didn't take them that long to make this game in my opinion. Enough talk and watch for yourself.
 
   
  

That just about does it for this week. I can't believe I actually sat down and wrote this without being distracted. Let's hope I can catch up with the times. As you can tell, the Black Ops DLC got me back into playing the game so Activision wins this round. I have the next blog written down, i just have to type it up and it will be on it's way out. Sony Announcement's

Sony  announced PlayStation Suite! Oh, Andriod-based PlayStation gaming not good enough for you? You don't like being able to play  PlayStation 1  games on your Andriod phone?  Alright, the real  announcement  at Sony's Event in Tokyo was the official reveal of their next portable handheld gaming device, Next Generation Portable, or  NGP , or PSP2 as the cool people call it. I'm not cool so I'll call it NGP. It is a bit bigger than the PSP-1000, two analog sticks not nubs, 5 inch OLED front touch screen and rear touch panel, new OS called LiveArea, front and rear cameras, Six-Axis motion sensing similar to the PS3 controller, GPS, Wi-FI and 3G, and games come on a flash memory based card. The games shown at the event, like: WipEout, Resistance, and Uncharted, look amazing. Let's hope we see some more amazing stuff, including a release date and price (I say around $300-$400) in the near future. You can watch the whole press conference, in six parts, on SCEA's official YouTube channel, starting right here. The NGP looks like an interesting piece of hardware. With so much technology crammed into it, it is said to look as good as PS3 games. I take this as, for example, Uncharted looks as good on a PSP as it would on a PS3, not really the same on both consoles, but good on their own individual consoles. Wither way I'm excited to see what Sony has to bring to the table with this new hardware.

 

Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

 
Remember that awesome viral Mortal Kombat video that came out last year? NO?! Well here it is if you have not watched it yet. Anyway, Warner Bros. announced that it will develop a live action web-series about Mortal Kombat. The director of the trailer, Kevin Tancharoen, will direct the new series which is set to release this spring, to coincide with the release of the new Mortal Kombat game. Michael Jai White is said to reprise his role as Jackson "Jax" Briggs and into the history of some chracters, including Scorpion, Johnny Cage, and Liu Kang. This is a smart move on WB's part because this is great marketing for the new MK game. Think about this, if the web-series were to reveal the history of the MK characters, it is good marketing for a game that is going back to the "golden years" of the MK franchise. It would bring in people who love the MK fiction and bring in people who are interested in the game but do not know the characters. I love the idea and as I have said before, I cannot  wait for this game.

I know some of you are wondering where this weeks edition was. Well i got lazy again and I'm still trying to find my rhythm doing this blog. I know what I have to do, just need to put it into action. So this past weeks Blog will be posted this upcoming Sunday, along with this weeks Blog. So that's TWO (2) blogs on one day. That day happens to be Super Sunday, the day of the Super Bowl. If I'm not busy, I will write BOTH of the blogs this week and post them on Sunday. So sorry for the wait.

This Week in Gaming #1 (1/16-1/22)

Hey all and Welcome to my new Blog Series, This Week in Gaming News. Generic name, I know, but it’s straight forward. The formal introductions were made in my previous post so I won't get into that so lets get our news on. Lets start with what was probably the biggest news this week. 

  

News


  Nintendo 3DS

 Nintendo released information about it's new handheld, the Nintendo 3DS, this week in New York. It will release on March 27, 2011 for $249.99 in the US. Many games were announced including: a list of games from Ubisoft, The Sims 3, Madden NFL, Super Street Fighter IV 3D, and many others. The 3DS sounds like a really cool device from what every gaming news site is saying, and games look very interesting and from the video released on Wednesday, it looks like a really cool device but I personally have to get my hands on it to make a good impression on me. I saw it behind a glass case at E3 and did not want to wait in a LONG line to see it. 

 

Black Ops First Strike DLC

Call of Duty: Black Ops will receive it's first piece of DLC next month. Set to release on February 1, 2011, First Strike DLC will contain four new maps and a new zombie mode map. The maps will release on the Xbox 360 first for 1200 Microsoft Points and there has been no word yet on a PS3 and PC release. Treyarch released a video on YouTube detailing the new multiplayer maps. I am looking forward to playing on these maps. They all add some new tactic to the way people play on these maps, with the zipline on Kowloon and the "No Man's Land" in Berlin Wall. 
   

  

 Final Fantasy XIII-2

After a domain name was registered last week, Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy XIII-2. It will follow the character Lightning and will be joined by a brand new character. This is not a first in the series as Final Fantasy X got a sequel in Final Fantasy X-2. The game will release this year in Japan on the Xbox 360 and PS3. No word on the US release but expect sometime next year. I cannot give first-hand impressions of FFXIII because i have not played it, but from the many podcasts I listen to, the same problem came up, the game was too linear for too long. Hopefully, the next game can fix those problems. 
 

 
Portal 2 PS3 News

Valve announced some Portal 2 news this week. Back at E3, Gabe Newell came out on the stage at the Sony Press Conference and said that the PS3 version of Portal 2 will be "the best version on consoles". The news that came out this week seems to prove that point. The PS3 versions of Portal 2 will have cloud-based storage of game saves, cross-platform chat, cross-platform play between the PC/Mac and PS3, and a free copy of the game for PC/Mac by linking your PSN ID and Steam account. This news is awesome for anyone picking up the game for the PS3, such as myself. This furthers my excitement for this game. April 21 cannot come sooner enough. 

 

Help With Modern Warfare 3

According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, Infinity Ward  is gathering help from Activision sister studios, Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software, with their next game. With the release of Jason West and Vince Zampella this past year, along with numerous others, that IW needs help creating their next game, weather its MW3 or another project. Sledgehammer, who was working on a spin-off of the Call of Duty franchise, will help IW with the single-player, while Raven handles the multi-player. Since the release of West and Zampella, I've always had a sick feeling in my stomach about the future of Infinity Ward. It seems the studio has been in the pits lately and I have told myself over and over again that there would be no MW3. Now with this news, seeing that MW3 could be an actuality, I now believe that it won't be good. I'm sure it'll still do big numbers, as all CoD games do, but I don't think it'll be a good game. An ignorant opinion I know, but it's my gut feeling. 

 

Quick Fire

There was a ton of other news this week that does not need much explanation. Thus a Quick Fire Segment of the blog.  

  •  Mass Effect 2 came out on the PS3 this past week. Sites, such as IGN, GameSpot, and Game Informer, reviewed it. I haven't played ME2 at all yet and when I get money, I will surely pick it up.     
  • WWE All Stars was given a trailer this past week featuring "Macho Man" Randy Savage. This is a surprise, given the Macho Man does not seem to like Vince McMahon and the WWE, mostly Vince. It's nice to see he's in the game though and it looks awesome.
  • Anyone plan on buying Killzone 3? (I will eventually) Well you're in for a treat as those who buy it will also get a code for the SOCOM 4 Beta when it goes live. Killzone 3 releases February 22. SOCOM 4 is said to release this spring.
  • In other Killzone 3 news, there will be an open beta for this game. The beta will run from February 2 - 14 and will be a free download to all US PS3 users. It will offer early access to 2 maps and has support for PlayStation Move and Stereoscopic 3D.
  • Propaganda Games, makers of Turok and Tron: Evolution, closed down this week. Condolences to those affected.
  • With the release of LittleBigPlanet 2 this week, Sony held an event in New York attempting to break 7 Guinness World Records. They broke 5. Congrats to all who participated. Full details from the PS Blog here .
  • Isaac Clarke, star of Dead Space, will appear in Dragon Age 2. Trailer goes here .
  • Gears of War: Triple Pack was announced, with a misleading name. It will come with Gears of War, Gears of War 2, and Gears of War: All Fronts Pack DLC, all for $30.
  • Release Date News:
  1. Double Fine's Stacking will release for $15 on the PSN Feb. 8 and XBLA Feb. 9
  2. PlayStation Move Heroes will release March 22, 2011 on the PS3
  3. Conduit 2 also releases March 22, 2011 on the Wii
  4. Mortal Kombat  has a release date of April 19, 2011 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Totally excited for this game.
  5. Duke Nukem: Forever FINALLY has a release date of May 3, 2011 for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. It also got a "reveal" trailer .

New Blog Series: This Week in Gaming #0

Hello everyone who can read this. I don't know if anyone else does this sort of thing but I thought it was an interesting idea that I've had in my head for a while and what better place to start to put it into action then on Giant Bomb Dot Com. 

So basically this blog series will be what the title insists, and that is bringing video game news of the week to one place. I follow all the major gaming sites on Twitter (IGN, GameSpot, The Feed by G4, Game Informer, and of course Giant Bomb) and all their tweets get sent to my phone, so I am never out of the loop and I want to bring this to the people. I will give very short opinions on the topic. The space will also be filled with non-gaming news from time to time from sites like Mashable and others I can find. 
 
The blog will also show the new game releases for the past week. Short impressions of the game will be written, weather I have played it or not. That's the basic idea behind the blog.

They will be posted every Sunday. I will try to write these as they develop over the week. Hopefully I can keep this up for a while, with school starting and what-not. If anyone has any feedback at all, please do not hesitate to tell me. The first episode for the week of 1/16-1/22 is almost done being written, late I know but it was half way done and I want to finish it. Expect it to show up by Afternoon Today PST. My First Blog - Let's Make it Last

alrite im mostly doin this becuae of the quest but i also wanna make a list of things i wanna start using Giant Bomb for in the future. i tried to do them last year but wasnt as dedicated as i hope i will b next year, starting Jan. 1, 2011 
 
first i wanna keep track of games that i buy in the year. ill list the game and the day i buy it and from where i bought the game 
 
second i will keep track of the games i have played during the year. the date will be recorded the day it was played and only once will the game show up. 
 
thats mostly it. i dont know wat else i will use blogs for. if i get any ideas, i guess ill put them here.
