I purchase a Playstation 3, and venture into Uncharted territory!

I am so, so, SO sorry about that blog title! I know how this community feels about crappy, obvious puns and sincerely apologize for it!

Anyway, I don’t how I managed to make it five years without holding a PS3 controller- I guess at first it was about money, I was 16 and didn’t have $600 to spend on a game system. Then it was about the exclusives, I loved Halo 3, and didn’t know what Uncharted was, or didn’t care about Metal Gear. It’s been five years, there are PLENTY of PS3 exclusives that I want to play, and a recent promotion has put some spare cash in my pocket, so I decided to pick one up! It turned out to be harder than I expected- My local Best Buy and WalMart were both sold out of the 320gb model of PS3, I called the rest of the places in town (even GameStop) to find that they’re all out of stock. Obviously I ordered one from Amazon and had it two days later- Damn, love Amazon.

The UI experience has been pretty pleasant so far- aside from the fact that it was about 45 minutes from the time I started it up, to the time I was playing the game. The mandatory system and game updates were a bit annoying, but I guess that’s to be expected after the shit-storm Sony’s been through lately. I was also disappointed that I couldn’t install the games to the hard-drive! I mean, what did I buy the 320gb model for if I can’t install all my games to it? Definitely not a deal-breaker though.

So, the first game I played was Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune- which was fucking awesome! The first thing the game asks is “Do you want the subtitles turned on?”, which was great! It was like the developers know exactly how I like to play games. People have described the game to me as being like Assassin’s Creed 1- an OK game that was greatly improved upon for the sequel, but I actually really liked it. Perhaps it’s my unconditional love for Nolan North. I’m not really one for writing in-depth reviews, my writing’s just not that elegant (I should work on that- it’s a skill that seems important). Though I’ll give you a quick Idea of what I liked and didn’t.

The story was great- I mean, it wasn’t complex, original, or really imaginative in any way- Drake’s looking for a treasure (A giant golden statue- El Dorado) which happens to be cursed. There are a few twists thrown in, but it’s mostly predictable. Not that that’s a bad thing, it’s basically a homage to Indiana Jones, and the fact that I’m constantly being fed pure concentrated Nolan North made me love it- in fact all of the actors were great (except maybe the peons I was shooting in the face).

The gameplay? It was fine. It took me awhile to adjust to the Dualshock 3, I mean, you don’t shoot with the trigger? What the hell is that about? I got used to that real quick, it’s a total non-issue. Whenever the Bombcast guys mention the game, all they talk about is how bullet-spongy the enemies were- but I honestly didn’t find it to be a problem. I played on the default difficulty, and ammo was never an issue. Head-shots are easy to pull off, and if you shoot fast enough, enemies drop pretty quickly. Although, if there’s one concept I hate when playing games, it’s the unnecessary power outages, and the annoying “Find the generator!” sequences. I cringed uncontrollably when Elania told me to “Get the power back on!”

The graphics are fine- it looks better than most of the Xbox 360 launch titles, and I can’t wait to see what Uncharted 2 looks like. There were a few quirks- Nathan Drake wears the ring of his ancestor, Frances Drake, around his neck at all times. At one point, he removes it, and leaves it behind. It’s missing during the game-play sequences, but he’s magically wearing it again during the next cut-scene! Then it’s missing again- it’s not a big deal, but I totally noticed it.

This entire blog probably seems outdated and unnecessary to anyone who own a Playstation 3, but this is a new experience for me, and I feel like writing about it! Oh, by the way, I only know two dudes who own PS3s, so my friends list is pretty empty. If you’ve got one, feel free to add TooWalrus. Thanks for reading!

Bah, I sometimes feel like the only person who thinks Uncharted is nothing more than "OK". It isn't original or creative or amazing, it's like Gears of War and Tomb Raider had a baby that tries to do everything its parents do but can't seem to quite grasp it. Not saying it's bad, it is most definitely not, but I don't see the praise at all.
Yeah, I don't understand it either. It was a good game, and pretty enjoyable, but I just don't get all the hype and praise (much like Gears, in fact). It's an 8/10 game for me, very good as a cover-based TPS (the platforming was lacking), but nothing revolutionary or mind-blowing like some people make it out to be. As far as PS3 exclusives go, I personally found Heavy Rain to be the generally more enjoyable experience (despite the jank... and the dumb conclusion). Say what you will about QTEs, but the Heavy Rain/Indigo Prophecy route is one of the directions adventure games should take. Point and click will always have its place, but it's also time to move on.
Now, Gears of War can have my praise and Cliffy B. can have my money for that game. It's the game that made shooting from cover popular, and for very good reason. I haven't, erm, "played" Heavy Rain. I say "played" with quotations because from what I've seen, it's a long game with a lot of QTE's and not much else to actually "play" with. Not hating on the game, mind you, but I don't see the appeal at all.

Uncharted 2 just flows so much better than the first one.

Uncharted 1 is basically; move a couple feet, get into a firefight. Move a couple more feet, get into another firefight. Move into this large room, try your best to kill all the enemies in the room (who also respawn a few times) without dying five times in the process.

They do- for some reason I had it in my head that Uncharted was a PS3 launch title- I probably should have compared it to Bioshock or something else that came out around that time. Oh well.

I am not even going to bother what these fucks above me said or what you said. All I can say is if you bought a PS3 and played Uncharted 1, you better play 2. Because that game was balls deep amazing. I couldn't put it down and I have been in a horrible sad state of gaming since I beat it a month ago. I feel like I got dumped because nothing else has made me feel happy again. I needs me some Uncharted 3 or I might just sell my games and systems and start drinking.

I actually thought the in the title was clever. Keep up the good work.

Hey thanks- I'm actually finishing up the second one tonight. I finished Uncharted 2 last week, and Metal Gear Solid 4 a few hours ago. Here's a spoiler: I liked both of them.

Ironically I'm going through Uncharted 1 again right now and I still enjoy it myself. I notice the obvious aging of the game as well as miss a lot of the polish of 2 but the story really hooks me in. I love the Indiana Jones meets Tomb Raider style that pretty much makes the game feel like a summer action blockbuster rather then a game. Glad to see you enjoyed it and yeah, i will agree with those that say Uncharted 2 will really make your jaw drop especially if you like 1 as much as this blog indicates. A PS3 is still a good buy and having both systems means you can just enjoy and play games instead of being locked out of console exclusives.

Hey yeah, I actually finished Uncharted 2 last week, and everyone was right- I loved it! Though, Assassin's Creed 2 probably still would've been my Game of the Year for 2009. I was going to write something about it- but it would have been roughly the same as this blog. Right now though, I'm into act 4 of Metal Gear Solid 4, and that game is fucking insane. First I hated it, then I liked it, now I fucking love it- I may write something about that.

By the way, this is coming from someone who considers the first three Crash Bandicoot games to be the best series on PS1 and the Jak and Daxter games to be the second best series on PS2. I was expecting the same level of quality from Uncharted, and it just couldn't come close to the same high notes that those games do.

Ha, the first comment I got on this blog was totally a spam-bot, it's been deleted now though.

@Sanj: I've been picking up games on the cheap- I've got copies of Metal Gear, InFamous, Killzone, and Resistance on my shelf, and I'll pick up God of War soon- I'm playing Uncharted 2 now, though.

@ikwal: My internet here is slow as shit, I can never download more than 300kb/s.

Cool, gifs work on Giant Bomb.

If you hate a game and have no expectations for a sequel, you're more likely to like the sequel.

If you love a game and have huge expectations for a sequel, and everybody told you how awesome it was, you're less likely to like the sequel.

In other words, if you eat a shit sandwich and put another food item in your mouth afterwards, you're likely to like that food item.

Do you get it now?

Glad to hear you legitimately liked the first UC. I know a lot of people were kind of dismissive of it when it first launched, because it wasn't that original and everything was just good, not great. However, everyone's tune changed when UC2, and as you will see, for a very good reason. Everything is tweaked, refined, and improved upon. You are in for a real treat.

The game installing works diferent than on xbox. Most games will intall a small portion of the most used data to the HDD, instead of just intalling the whole disc on the HDD which will fill up your HDD real fast.

I hear a lot of people complaining about the updates and that they take long to download, but they have never taken longer than 5min for me. And updates are good, they fix things.

@TooWalrus: Fuck the community. That pun was beautiful.
Also, Uncharted 2 is just leaps and bounds better than the original. Just the motion of aiming and movement is so much better. Drake's Fortune is really, really hard to go back to after having played the sequel.
