Today I had my first experience with Sushi. In suburban Michigan.

So at first thought, suburban Michigan doesn't exactly seem like the most sensible place to open a new Sushi restaurant- though in the past decade, we've attracted a ton of Asian immigrants of all flavors. My town is home to both the Dow Chemical headquarters, and has a decent business university I attend, so it kinda makes sense. Anyway, I've never actually had sushi before, so I figured it'd just go for it. What I ordered was a meal consisting of 10 assorted Sushi pieces, some tuna roll, and some miso soup. I wasn't sure which fish was which, so I took a few pictures so I could identify it later. I'm pretty sure what I got was Tuna, Salmon, Spanish Mackerel and Crab (...Krab?) Keep in mind that the quality of these pictures isn't great, the real deal was actually much more colorful- here they are:

So, my feelings on this experience are mixed. On one hand, I despise krab- the ground-up whitefish dyed to look like real crab is off-putting in taste, texture, smell... I'm just not a fan, however, though today I found out I really like the sushi rice- it's sticky, sweet, salty and kinda tangy (there's vinegar in it, right? I watched a Good Eats episode about this before ordering). The tuna roll and tuna nagari were OK. It wasn't especially flavorful, but with a little wasabi and a dab of soy sauce, it's definitely not off-putting (it was a little... fishy.) The salmon and Spanish mackerel on the other hand, were fantastic. Extremely flavorful and not 'fishy' at all. It's good stuff!

Overall, I liked what I ate. I get that this isn't top-grade stuff, I'm sure the real fresh stuff near the coast is on another level, but for a first experience, I'm just pleased I didn't hate the stuff.

Every time I come into contact with japanese food, I have hated it.

Except for ramen. Kinda hard to fuck up ramen.

Looks like a pretty standard but otherwise good choice of fish and yeah, sushi uses rice vinegar to keep it moist and sticky. That plus it's sushi rice which is specialised for you know, sushi. Also, it's miso soup. Just so you know.

Sushi fucking rocks. Sounds like you do like the pure fish sushi. Yellow Tail is another you should try. I also really like Eel rolls. That is some good shit.

First time I had sushi I loathed it, nearly vomited, and it was a reputable sushi place too. A few years later I gave it another shot and loved it. Not sure what changed, but now I quite like it.

Also, can't go wrong with some miso soup before the main dish.

The times I've had sushi, I've never really tasted it, you know? Like there's something in my mouth, and I'm chewing it and swallowing it, but there's no flavor. It probably doesn't help that I avoid the wasabi and always forget the soy sauce.

The one exception being shrimp tempura, which is basically fried shrimp all sushified. That's fucking great. The dragon roll, or whatever they're called which, I think, are basically fancy shrimp tempura, are extra fucking great. I want one right now.

My first experience with sushi was at a Chinese buffet. I didn't like it, but considering the circumstances, I'm okay with trying it again at a more appropriate setting.

There are good sushi places and there are bad sushi places. Maybe you'll like it better somewhere else.

Love sushi. Rather pricey around my parts. Could eat nothing but sushi, breakfast lunch and dinner - and I'd be very happy with it. Wasabi being one of my favorite condiments doesn't hurt either. Nothing like the cold breeze of wasabi brain pain in the morning. Usually have a wasabi/majo/butter egg sandwich in the morning - and it's the best.

Sushi is so good you don't even need fish. I like the ones that come with just veggies rolled in rice. Or the tofu-wrapped rice. I just wish they didn't come with soy sauce packets, I hate dealing with them, and the stuff is great even without soy sauce.

Sushi is alright. I'm not a fan of the stuff with cucumber though. I also haven't had any since moving to the midwest. Coming from the west coast, I've been sort of spoiled. Besides, I'm more of a katsu guy myself. Hard to go wrong with a fried pork cutlet.

@TooWalrus: The two things everyone should learn about sushi are this:

1. The fresher the sushi the better it will taste (Usually, I've an instance of bad fresh sushi).

2. There is a HUGE taste difference between bad sushi and good sushi.

I wish I had known this when I first had sushi because I hated it. Then, I went to a good sushi joint. I love it now, it's probably one of my favorite dishes. Also, if you're new to sushi, try eating rolls and move into eating nigiri or sashimi.

I would love to get my hands on some truly good sushi. It's unfortunate that it's (mostly) impossible to find unless you happen to live in or near a major city that's relatively close to one of the coasts.
