GOTY 2011

List items

  • Incredible visual design, good story, great action, and it just feels different. This is RPG not all crapped up by D&D mechanics, Tolkein design, or tedious western-world prudishness. The combat system incorporates real-time action nearly perfectly. This is a feat many top-tier developers have been attempting, and failing for a few years now. The Witcher 2 does it right, does it with style, and looks great doing it.

  • ..only just beat out by the Witcher 2 because Skyrim lacks the harder edge of The Witcher and doesn't look or play nearly as well. It almost makes up for it in scope, but too much of it unravels in really inelegant ways when you poke around at it. A better UI for pure caster character builds and a better, more impactful and strategic melee combat system would have clinched the #1 spot.

  • It's back, bigger and better than before. More Demon's Souls is always welcome.

  • Great sequel to a great game, with just enough new stuff. Thoughtful and unique world design interconnecting the puzzles pushes this game toward the top of the list. Too much emphasis on co-op action undercuts the great single player piece.

  • This is a classic RPG with some good combat and bosses. Bioware should be taking notes. It looks really good and plays great. The areas are varied and unique, and the quests are almost always fun.

  • Finally someone gets what sandbox gameplay should be. Crazy, surreal, exploring some boundaries.

  • This game is weird in a really good way. It has an amazing setting and interesting story. Some of the powers are pretty interesting and the action isn't half bad.

  • Perfected visual design, the BEST title track music all year, pretty-alright action, and some of the gadgets are very fun. DUMB as hell story. Pretty terrible characters too. Thankfully killing them all off at the end is an option. The only option in my opinion.

  • Wizard action shooter. well someone had to do it eventually! Generally a pretty simple game, but fun and well-executed. Decently deep and strategic online multiplayer modes.

  • It works. The song selection isn't bad. It recognizes string bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs, palm muting, and full chords. I'm learning a few new songs and some new techniques!
