A Startling Discovery: I've Probably Never Beaten A Mario Game.

Is there a person on earth able to say he has beaten every single game with the character Mario in it? Well, I've recently discovered I've never even beaten the core games in the franchise, a fact that is hurting my gamer cred.

My Mario nostalgia is probably the most general one. I've played the essentials and the iconic music and character will forever be engraved into my memory. I started playing games at about age 5, having recieved the NES and SNES from my uncle and niece who had moved on. This was early to mid and late 90's. The thing is, I got them all at once so I don't remember in what order I played what but I still own them and looking at them, I realized I haven't beaten a single mario game. I've seen nearly every world and level but never the end.

Super Mario Bros.

No Caption Provided

I remember this as Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt. It's only relatively recently that I actually got to see the end, by watching my younger sister beat it. As a kid I was never able to beat it because I think I just wanted to run to fast instead of taking the time to examine the obstacles. As of today I still haven't beaten it myself because I'm still so impatient.

Super Mario Bros 2

No Caption Provided

At the time I simply didn't understand or accept the concept. Why was I digging through sand, why was I picking up enemies, why did this whole game feel so different. In retrospect I think it's pretty original but I've never beaten the game because I haven't taken the time to.

Super Mario Bros 3

No Caption Provided

Awesome game with disctinct worlds. I felt that it was a bit more forgiving and just better designed levels. I clearly remember every world up to world 8, but I've never beaten the game. Same Deal, I watched my sister beat it.

Super Mario World

No Caption Provided

There's weird feelings you can have as a kid, such as "being in love" with a game. Everytime you start it up you feel butterflies because it's so exciting and beautiful. This game fell under that category for me. Immensely colorful and deep, but Sadly I have not beaten this game because my niece owned the copy and I didn't see her that often. A couple of years ago I bought it second hand and put it in, most of the magic was still there but I haven't beaten it because, and this game really made me realize it, I SUCK at 2D Platformers. Mario isn't even hard but too hard for me appearently.

Super Mario 64

No Caption Provided

Completely mindblown by this game. Maybe it has to do with my age but this was just more my thing. Charming as can be, the third person mechanic was just new and flawless. Unlocking stars to progress to dive into another painting, i mean everything about it was so much fun. I remember getting most of the stars but I cannot for the life of me recall finishing it. I think I missed like three stars. My favorite Mario game.

Super Mario 3D Land

No Caption Provided

I really appreciate what they did with this game and was genuinely surprised they pulled it off. It combined the best of mario into a unique game, for as much as that is possible these days, BUT I have not cleared this game. I beat the first 8 worlds and the second set of 8 worlds after that but I didn't get all the stars, meaning I'm one level away of beating it.

Other

I've definitely poked at Other Mario Games, I must have played Mario Kart somewhere at some point, played some Dr Mario, The Lost Levels as part of Super Mario All Stars, Super Mario Land for the Gameboy, Mario Tennis and Super Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros...but the point is, I have never beaten a Mario Game. Not only does history repeat itself for Mario, but also for me, In my inability to finish these games appearently.

I'm curious, what's your Mario "parcours" as it were?

I couldn't beat Sunshine for the life of me. Don't know why but I got stuck at every obstacle in that game.

This is weird, but I think I've beaten every Mario game (until the Wii generation, anyway. Haven't played Galaxy 2 or Super Paper Mario).

I'm with ya. I'm so, so bad at platformers. I thought for years that I had beaten SMB3, but when I think about it, my memory of doing so doesn't really hold up.

Edit: Shit, I DID beat one. Super Mario Land on the Game Boy. (which was an AWESOME game, and deserves more love)

I didn't beat any of the NES games until Allstars. I also remember watching my big sister beat Mario 1 and 3 and being super jealous that I didn't have the skill to do so. I've never finished Mario 64, I couldn't tell you how far I got I just remember being turned off by Mario not being in 2D (Yes, I know it sounds a little insane) My little sister did everything in 64 though, so I have seen most of the game.

I've never played Sunshine as I didn't have a Gamecube. I'm really far into Galaxy, I started it earlier this year, but the big end of year game barrage put a stop to me playing it. I shall definitely return to it and then move onto Galaxy 2. What a beautiful game.

I beat World back in the day, but hadn't beaten another one until... I dunno, the first New game.   I finally beat 3 like five years ago, then did 1 after realizing I never finished it (it's hard, man).

I've beaten the Galaxies, the New games, and 3D Land, but a few years ago I would've been in the same boat as you.  Played the crap out of all the old games, but World was my only victory.

I dunno, it sounds like you have beaten Mario 64 and 3D Land from your description. "Beat" usually means finishing the story and main set of levels. You sound like you're referring to 100%, which is a whole other ball of wax.

I beat 64 and 64 DS, Paper Mario, New Super Mario Bros., and Luigi's Mansion, but that's where my championship ends, too.

Guys, let's just go play NES games.

I've only beaten Super mario bros. (the GBC one), Yoshi's island (the GBA one), Super Mario 64 (DS), and New Super Mario Bros.

Weird, I realized that I only beat games if they're portable...

I've never beaten a NES or SNES Mario game (and... guys... I have a confession to make. I don't really love them all that much. I like 'em. But don't love 'em.). I've beaten 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and Galaxy 2 plus New Super Mario Bros. Wii. I 100%ed Super Mario 64 and I unlocked Luigi in Galaxy, (oh and I'm not even gonna get into Mario Kart or the RPG's or any of that stuff. They're a whole other beast.)

But if you're only missing 3 stars in Super Mario 64 then you've beaten a Mario game.

I still haven't ever beaten Super Mario Brothers, which I feel kind of bad about. I always end up using the warp zones, and then shortly after lose interest because I feel like I'm cheating. I've never beaten a 3D mario, is that weird?

For reference I've beaten: SMB3, Super Mario Land 1 and 2, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, if that counts, and Super Mario RPG, which probably doesn't. Oh, and the first New Super Mario Brothers.

I have beaten quite a few of them, to be fair though I feel like it was easier to beat those NES/SNES games in 80's and 90's. Most everyone, myself included had more patience to play them over and over since access to other titles was more limited. Nowadays it's pretty easy get distracted by the next shiny game.

Super mario Bros. 1,2,3

Super Mario Land (remember those GB games?) - i think

Super Mario World

Mario 64 - 100%

Super Mario Sunshine - 100%

New Super Mario Bros.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

plus a bunch of kart/RPG/Luigi's Mansion games if they matter

I still need to get off my but and play the Galaxy games

Finished 1
Played 2
Played 3
Played World
Finished 64
Finished Sunshine (like six times, I love that game)
Played like an hour or two of Galaxy, didn't find it interesting. The gimmick didn't grab me at all and the whole time I was just thinking "I wish I didn't have to use a Wii controller to play this."
Finished NSMBWii (including the star coins)

The only reason I never finished 2/3/World is because I haven't played them since I was a kid.

Really, thinking about recent Mario games, they just feel so damn stagnant. I wish they'd mix it up a little again.

Good luck beating Super Mario Bros. That game is a bitch to beat, and probably the hardest Mario game to date. Every other Mario game has some way to easily farm lives and power ups if necessary, while the first game basically fucks you if you skip through it. Even though you can continue by holding down the A button on the Game Over screen and pressing start at the Title Screen, I find it almost impossible to beat that last world starting from scratch.

If you really want to beat that first game, I suggest skipping through and the whole thing with the warp pipes and making sure you don't lose Fire Mario in the last world. Those last levels are a giant fucking asshole and Fire Mario makes them much easier.

I say all this because I recently realized the only Super Mario games I've actually beaten were 64 and Galaxy, even though I played the shit out of the first and third one as a kid. So, I decided that needed to be rectified and now I've beaten 1, 3, and World in the past few months.

You disgusting piece of human shit. How dare you post on a video game forum! GET OFF THE INTERNET! I kid of course. Kind of. Sort of. But not really. If you are not into that genre I can see someone not beating one. The only reason I beat a few of them was because back then that was what you played when you got a NES/SNES because they came in the box. Back then, for me anyway, you were lucky to get one or two new games a year so you played the shit out of everything you got. If I had of never gotten them I wouldn't have ever beaten one ether as I honestly have not cared for a Mario game since World on the SNES, and I have not cared for a Nintendo platform since the SNES outside of GameBoy's. Which I got to play Pokemon and not much else.

It's a cake walk compared to the first one. Especially because there is a castle in the 7th world that can be played over and over again to collect 99 lives. I say all this as I beat it within the same week as I beat the first game, and so I feel like I have a good perspective. I will say playing the first game over and over again made me pretty good at Mario, and by the time I got to the third game I found it much easier to go through. So, it's probably just because I had so much practice because my cousin and I tried to beat the third game together a year ago and got completely fucked in the last world.

@DoctorWelch: I always had the same pattern when I played it. I would save the P-Wing you get early on for the flying airships, The tanks were a lot easier. I always used to find I started having troubles in the sky world, the level that scrolls especially.

I have never completed a single Mario game. Why? Because I dont like Plat former games....strange considering I love the idea of Parkour and the implementation in game.

I was also Sega child, Master-system and Mega-Drive/Genesis, I had a Snes complete Starfox/Starwing and Zelda a link to the past. I only owned one Marion and that was Mario 64...hated it.

I also dont like Banjo Kazooie and I was playing Conkers Bad life and reloaded the remake on the xbox 1. I hate that too.

I dont see it harms my Gamer Cred, I have tones of Master system and Mega-drive/Genesis memories that would rival any negativity I should get for not playing or enjoying Mario games I say not enjoy I only enjoyed Mario Kart. I also love GBA games so many fantastic games I never see anywhere else.

Overall Mario nope I dont get the deal with Mario, I understand Zelda...in the past, not in modern times. I like the Nes and Snes Zelda's not any after.

So I dont see it as that bad, it only matters if you care and apparently you do as you like Mario.

@GunstarRed: The tanks are easy if you just take your time and don't try anything stupid. Also, those levels with the hand that grabs you and pulls you in are actually extremely easy and you get a power up at the end of them, so they always helped. The level I used the P-Wing on was one with a shit ton of pipe monsters cause it was just so insanely hard to get through that thing without getting hit by something.

I've only beaten 64. My sisters and I collectively got through World, and I think my eldest sis beat SMB3. 1, Lost Levels, and 2 weren't favourites in our household though. Never played the RPG games or anything past the N64.

I don't think I've ever beaten a Mario game either. Let's break it down.

Super Mario Bros - actually got to the final boss once. I died, ran out of lives and did not feel like doing the final stage all over again.

SMB2 - this I've only seen my brother complete once. Always got bored with it after a while. Still like it a lot though.

SMB3 - I really don't like the last third or so of this game. Up until the cloud world and the pipe world it's fine. After that it gets frustrating and just not fun.

World - never had a SNES back in the day. I've fired it up on emulators many times, but never finished it.

64 - don't like this game one bit, so of course I never beat it either.

Galaxy - love this game, but since I've always had to borrow my brother's Wii to play it, I've never found the time to finish it.

And the rest I have not played more than a few levels of. Maybe one day I'll finish Galaxy and Mario World!

SMB2 was a god awful game so I can forgive you for not finishing that. As for SMB1 there is a shortcut in the castle of the first world where you can skip to the last world. You should do that to quickly get through to the end.

Don't feel bad. I've only actually beaten Super Mario Brothers 3 (using the flutes and all the way through without short cutting). I've never beaten any of the other ones.
I've been thinking about going back to Super Mario Bros. 2. That one was always baffling, when i was a kid, but still a cool game. I actually do want to finish it at some point in my life.

Meh, I totally skipped NES, SNES, Master System, and Genesis....no harm done. By 1984 I owned a computers, totally switched over to playing game on Apple and then on PC until 1989, and then I just stopped gaming during college 1989 to 1993. (Kids...don't play video game in college. If you are - either you're not studying enough or not plowing enough. Live you life from age 17-24, games will be there on the other side.)

If you feel guilty about it, pick one, and beat it. I've had this same realization about a number of franchises. First was Final Fantasy. I was a fan, but realized that it was strange to like a franchise if no one member of that franchise could hold my attention long enough to play it to the end. Now, I've beaten every game in the franchise except the first two. I'll finish them with time, I'm about 1 hour in to II, but I'm pretty burned out by III which I only beat a few months ago.

I did something similar with the Mario franchise one year later. It was a different story, I had beaten the original game, 64 DS, and World. I wanted to finish things up, so I beat 3, Yoshi's Island, and got about halfway through 2, which is extremely difficult.

Going back and playing these games from start to finish is one of the best things I've ever done. This all took place during my junior year of high school, and I discovered some of my absolute favorite games. In the 5 years that have passed, I've played Final Fantasy IX and VIII twice, and I've played Yoshi's Island three times (and am slowly working through it a fourth time). There is a reason these games are remembered so fondly, so if you have them readily available, go back and finish them!

You have probably beaten Mario 64.. getting all the stars is not "beating" the game, it´s completing it, 100percenting it or as some would say VinnyCaravellaing it.

Come on, you beat Mario 64, right? That one wasn´t hard at all.

I probably haven´t beaten most of the 2D Mario Games, but some of them are HARD, so there´s no shame in that. Beat all the Gameboy ones though! Oh and to everybody in this thread who hasn´t played/beaten Galaxy 2 yet: Go get it! It´s so damn amazing.

I didn't start beating Super Mario games till I got the Gameboy Color in 2001 and a copy of Super Mario Bros Deluxe. After that it was Super Mario Advance 2, 3 and 4 (didn't have the first). It's harder now as I get older to finish any Mario game now since my attention wanders to what other games I'd rather be playing.
