Whenever I write lists like these, I realize around the 5th or 6th game that I haven't played nearly as many new games as I'd hoped I would, like Kirby's Epic Yarn or Enslaved.
I'm new around these parts, so this is probably as good a first post as any. Writing this list, I realized that I actually haven't played a lot of the new games I've really wanted to, so this certainly isn't my definitive list. It's just my "Top 10 Games of 2010... that I played in 2010."
Best of 2010
Trebz: Best of 2010 (subject to change as I finish more games of 2010)
With the best story of the whole year, the best atmosphere of the whole year, the best open world of the whole year, the best ZAMBEES of the whole year, the best real-time horse-muscles of the whole year and some pretty good gunplay to top it off, Red Dead Redemption is the best game I've played all year.
Yeah, I haven't beaten it, but it's the single most engrossing game of the year for me. I just have to give it a spot on my list of the best games of 2010.
The definitive music game. All the music you could ever hope for and more, practically every instrument you thought you could have and an interface as clean and practical as you hoped it could be. While there's always room for improvement, Rock Band 3 leaves very little left to be desired.
I'm usually not very interested in platformers and I often lose interest in extremely difficult games, so why is Super Meat Boy so enrapturing? Maybe it's the awesome music, great sense of personality, incredibly nimble controls and the consistently mind-boggling yet completely fair level design?
Yeah, it had a weak story with more holes than you could shake a stick at (something that, upon rereading, seems horribly wrong), but the actual gameplay, with its tense and sometimes even exhilarating scenes made Heavy Rain definitely worth the experience.
It's like my iPod Touch turned itself on, opened the App Store and said "Yo dawg, I heard you like making games so I put a game-maker in your game so you can make games while you game." AND IT WORKS.
