Sgt Pepper would be proud.
Okay, the title is a little over the topic but I needed a smart and probably overused title for this blog and that seemed to suit. Don't hate me for trying to be humorous and smart, though failing miserably. Anyway, let's get onto what we need to be discussing in the rather wonderful game known as
The Beatles: Rock Band. Now as many of you will no doubt know, the game gets it's release early next month and already developers
Harmonix Music Systems are doing their part in advertising the game in the right sort of way. I've been saying this for a while now but I really do believe that they've gone about this in all the right ways and advertising the game on QVC recently, makes the world of sense. Hopefully these advertising tactics will pay off in game sales.
So we are now less then a month away from it's release, and I for one am excited. While I was originally eager for the game upon it being announced. It wasn't until these past few months with the eventual first footage being shown at E3, that my excitement levels have reached critical nuclear levels. The Beatles aren't everyones cup of earl grey tea, like all good bands some people love them while some people don't and it's hard to see there being many Beatles songs that will reach the tough to play levels of say Dragonforce's 'Through the Fire and Flames'. But that's not really the point, for their songs are so memorable and classic. Songs such as 'Help!' or 'Let It Be' are the type of songs, that once you hear you can't stop singing. In fact, most of the currently confirmed TB:RB setlist features some of the bands most beloved songs. Songs that generations have adored.

Ringo gets a little help from his friends.
I've wanted to talk about The Beatles: Rock Band for sometime now, and this is as good a time as ever. Now while band specific music rhythm games have been around for a while now, none of really captured my imagination as a gamer. In fact it was only the recently released Guitar Hero: Metallica that got it right to a certain degree. There's little point in making a game dedicated to one band if you don't feature all the great tracks that band have recorded and the fans want to play. This was the problem with a number of past band specific music rhythm games and something I sense (and hope) won't effect The Beatles: Rock Band. Have to wait until we hear of the full setlist I guess.
But I really do sense that they chose the right folks to do a dedicated game based on The Beatles, they could easily have asked Activision and Neversoft. Though I get the feeling that probably wouldn't have gone down to well with both Beatles fans and gamers. I'm not saying Acivision/Neversoft can't make a good music rhythm game, Guitar Hero: Metallica was well received and offered the fan club styled experience fans wanted to see. In fact, I'm hoping to see something very much alike in The Beatles: Rock Band. Though I'd probably be just as happy with singing along to Yellow Submarine. But it would be nice if we saw some exclusive content within the game, or some surprise song no one was expecting to see or even play. Content like that always goes down well with fans.
The Beatles: Rock Band is as much about the presentation as it is about the songs, for it's clear that developers Harmonix have gone all the way to provide an eye catching, thrilling and colourful experience for all involved. I'll admit that they've even taken me by surprise, while I wasn't expecting the average Rock Band 2 copy like presentation of the AC/DC Live package that was released some months back. I wasn't exactly expecting it to look as stylish as it does. Paul, John, George and Ringo look fantastic and there's even been a few who feel there worthy of their very own statuettes and I wouldn't disagree. Considering that they slap The Beatles name on almost everything nowadays, I don't think it's that far into dreamland to not possibly expect a George Harrison statuette at some point in the near future. Plus let's be frank here, they'd probably sell like hot cakes on a cold Sunday morning.

Here comes the sun... nope, sorry it's still raining.
It will be rather interesting to see how The Beatles: Rock Band does sales wise, in theory it should do well and I suspect it will at least meet it's required development costs (though I have no idea how much it cost EA/HMX to get the rights to make the game). But it will be fascinating none the less, especially to see how sales of the hardware bundle do. I keep telling myself that the plastic hardware sales for these types of games will die off, yet it's clear they keep selling. Some folks must have mansions to keep the collection of plastic guitars, drums and mics they have around. Even I am still debating if to purchase the game and guitar bundle, I've been holding back on purchasing a new guitar after my recent Guitar Hero: World Tour guitar went to plastic instrument heaven.
But it shan't be long until we find out if The Beatles: Rock Band is the Beatles game we have all been waiting for, I have a good feeling about the game already and not a huge amount of it as been shown. Only a few songs to be exact, and while I still wait for my preorder code to checkout the exclusive content found within the preorder club, I have YouTube users to help me out with videos of Ticket to Ride, Birthday and Revolution. As you can probably tell I'm quite excited for the game and really do hope it's well received. The fact that it's a music rhythm game developed by Harmonix featuring master recorded tracks from The Beatles makes it all sorts of win for me and I haven't even got to play it yet. Yes we technically know what to expect from the gameplay, but new features such as three way harmony will make this one Beatles related game, proud to sing along to.
EXTRA NOTE!This blog as gone on a little longer then expected, but I thank you for taking the time to read it. Those who have read my past blogs may notice some changes and I intend to write up more varied and interesting content in the coming months. I've also decided that I'll be writing up more personal and none game related blogs from now on, many of the wonderful users here on Giantbomb do the same and I feel I should join the club. But for now I hope you keep reading and commenting on my blogs, there are some wonderful writers out there in the free and easy country of Giantbombland and the fact that even one person reads these is wonderful. So thanks!
