And that's all folks!

I hope this list will be helpful in finding the runs you might have missed. There are so many great runs. And if you want to support their cause, you can follow the Speed Demos Archive at their websites http://gamesdonequick.com/ and donate anytime to the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

The marathon total was: $1,025,497.34

Particular thanks goes out to Reddit users blazingkin and suudo. Their meticulous work in organizing all of this information was of great assistance to many people enjoying the runs during the marathon.

See you all for Summer Games Done Quick coming later this year and AGDQ 2015!

[Shout outs to everyone who visited http://www.explosiveruns.com and made it the best place for Giant Bomb members to chat about AGDQ.]

LOVE RYAN DAVIS

I also wanted to share a special thanks to all of you who donated at AGDQ 2014, and especially those who contributed toward donation incentives remembering Ryan.

Over $23,000 was raised to support cancer prevention in Ryan's honor.

You all are so generous, and I am very grateful for and proud of this community. "RyanD" successfully became the name of Robo in the Chrono Trigger Run with $9000 in donations, and everyone let out a cheer when it happened.

No Caption Provided

Video of the moment after a very tense bidding war:

Also of note was $1000 raised in support of naming Crono "Brono", and a whopping $13000 raised to successfully turn the flying time machine epoch into "2poch", in honor of Ryan and Patrick's Endurance Run of Chrono Trigger.

So many of these donations included heartfelt thanks to Ryan in their comments, and truly, this is a fantastic tribute to his life. Your love through this outlet of generosity will help more people avoid getting cancer.

Thank you so much.

Borderlands 2 they got Anthony Burch.

Well...for better or worse, that's certainly a person that worked on that game.

The VVVVVV stream was pretty fun to watch.

Terry: "Ok, you're about to come up on one of the hardest rooms in the game!"

(Runner skips entire room by warping in 0.2 seconds)

Terry: "Oh..."

It was actually rather interesting hearing some of his input, plus the sarcastic "you're welcome"s were funny.

That Viewtiful Joe run is bananas crazy. No insane glitches or funny stuff - maybe a minor quirk of the combat or tiny exploit here or there (like when they jump through the bathtub and save 30 seconds or so) - just a man who knows that game like the back of his hand.

Hell of a game, I played it to death on the Gamecube.

@bisonhero said:

Man, F-Zero GX speed run is pretty magical, because I played that game a LOT in high school, and actually beat most of the game on Very Hard after hours of trying it. But certainly not with the crazy physics tricks those guys have figured out.

I think I'm gonna check that run out next. I had the same experience with that game, just brute force, trying Very Hard levels over and over and over (and over) until I got them just right. Surprised I didn't destroy anything in frustration, cause that game is a motherfucker. Those were the days, when I had time for dumb stuff like that...*sigh*

It really is so, so bad. The CPU usage on the Twitch video player is absurd.

Yeah, the Viewtiful Joe run was one of my favorites, and the F-Zero GX run was done by what amounts to a human TASbot. ha. That man is a machine, and he purposefully styles, showing an amazing mastery of the systems. Frankly, it's a tense delight to watch.

Anyone have an updated bonus stream schedule? I'm pretty sure they said that it stretched to Wednesday a little while ago, but the one I'm looking at only lists stuff up until tonight.

I don't know..... I don't think its that bad. I checked my CPU and memory usage just the other day while i was streaming AGDQ and it was only hitting around 16% of my CPU which is in the same ballpark that the HTML5 player here on GB does. I think the issue isn't the player but Twitch and its awful servers. Their solution for all the new user load they have is to fucking delay everything by 60 seconds because THAT'LL fix everything. Derp. Derp.

Wow, you were not kidding about that GX run, the dude playing it was a maniac. The trick where he leaves the track for a frame and then comes back to boost (which just makes no sense, but I guess the physics in that game are super wonky, eh?) was nerve-wracking. And I recalled some frustrating memories when he played the "escape from the exploding reactors also watch out for all these walls level"; that was probably the hardest level for me to beat back in the day (and he had the cajones to skip one of the boosts, crazy!).

I should stop watching these speedruns and go to bed. But they are so crazy I just can't stop!

Thanks to this amazing list, I was able to watch the Zoo Race run. My life has been changed forever.

I am partaking of this particular run at the moment. It certainly is...special. Turns out there are good uses for bad games besides quick looks :P

I feel like I should be surprised that such an obscure dumb game has been grabbed onto by speedrunners, but it's so shoddily put together that it's ripe for exploit.

ha. Yeah, a lot of games in the "Awful Games Done Quick" block are quite fun and/or interesting to watch.

I would recommend Prayer Warriors to have an out of body experience.

Thanks to these speedruns I finally saw the second level of Spiderman and X-men: Arcade's Revenge looks like. Can't say for sure if I ever actually got to it myself. I played the first level a fair amount, but as far as I remember always got confused/bored and stopped.

No thanks to these speedruns my nostalgia for Diddy Kong Racing is taking a serious hit.

I need to go back and check that out. I think the opening Spider-Man stage is the only level that I ever finished. I may have gotten through Cyclops a few times, and I recall getting toward the end of Wolverine on a consistent basis and not knowing how to finish it.

@mb: That's why it's so bad? It's just insane that they haven't done anything about the player yet.

Derp. Derp.

Yeah, that makes sense. Good thing for Twitch that the PS4 streaming hasn't really caught on in terms of a lot of new viewers, if it had they'd be fucked.

Zallard's blindfolded run of Super Punch-Out is mandatory viewing. MANDATORY. ♥

Just watched Duckfist's Ninja Gaiden 2 sword only run. So tense. So great.

If you enjoyed the marathon and want to see more speedrunning, check out Speed Runs Live. It's a central hub site for hundreds of speedrunners on twitch. Really slick interface that shows you who is live, what they're playing, and how many viewers they currently have. Also go to the list above and watch all of PJ's runs and then go to his channel and follow him. He's the best. Plays all sorts of very obscure and usually very difficult games with hilarious commentary. Also, i'm not certain but I think he may be the most highly educated person in the speedrunning community as well.

PJ is literally the best. Damned crime he doesn't have more followers. Also a shame we didn't get any battletoads shenanigans with him and mecharichter this year, that's always a highlight.

Everybody owes it to themselves to watch his torch run of super ghouls 'n ghosts. Also check out his bad kart run after, it's absolutely hilarious.

Oh man, that's awesome. I didn't think they would get around to that. It's fantastic to see so much PJ love. I think the first speedrun I watched was his AwfulGDQ run of Lagoon which was hilarious. The Super Ghouls and Ghosts and Rockman and Forte runs are also so much fun. And when he teams up with Mecharichter for TMNT 3 and Battletoads and Double Dragons - perfect. Those guys are great.

Yeah, that Barkley run had everything. Laughs and tears, plus success and crashing. It was something else. Definitely not to be missed. :)

The Barkley run was definitely my favourite, as was the Viewtiful Joe and Windwaker runs by Cosmo. I just watched the Half Life 1 run and it was pretty amazing to see somebody beat it in less than 40 minutes but I'm trying to figure out if Gunnar Optik's sponsored him? Hearing him go back to "I'm using these Gunnar's, they're really good" felt pretty skeezy.

hmmm... You know, it's possible he may be trying to get a sponsorship, but as far as I can tell, he is not officially sponsored by Gunnar Optiks. Some popular speedrunners are sponsored by companies like that; though, hey, maybe someone at the event let him borrow some and he genuinely liked them.

And yeah, that Viewtiful Joe run. Just beautiful.

Worms nights on PJ's stream are incredible. PJ, Mecha, Gildersneeze, and Seawolf1 + the fact that Worms is super broken = hilarity

Anyone have an updated bonus stream schedule? I'm pretty sure they said that it stretched to Wednesday a little while ago, but the one I'm looking at only lists stuff up until tonight.

I might post a list of Bonus stream runs. Do you think people would like that info added to this post or made as a separate blog post?

Might as well add it to the end of this to keep it all in one place. This did all come from the Reddit VOD thread didn't it? I appreciate having it posted here as well but in the meantime anyone interested can find timestamp links to all of the main and bonus stream content there.

Yeah, most of it is sourced from the work being done in that thread. I joined Reddit at a good time. ha.

If people think it would be nice just added onto this post; I could probably update it tonight to include everything.

Fire Emblem 7 knowledge getting dropped on the bonus stream, and it sounds nuts.

Also you didn't watch all these, did you @truthtellah? It sounds like you've seen a lot... You do sleep, right?

I've seen a lot of these, yes. Not as much of the bonus stream, but here and there. I've seen at least a little of every run during official AGDQ 2014 though. :)

I was really sick during AGDQ; so, I was already not sleeping much. AGDQ was a nice thing to just have on.

FZero GX was definitely the highlight for me. Love that game, and it's crazy to see what insanity can be pulled off by an expert. Even on normal mode those missions were a bastard and a half to complete.

Still need to catch up on a lot though. Was really bummed to have missed the Super Metroid race; that sounded fantastic.

Developer Commentary

After seeing some requests, I have added a note next to the seven runs that I know had developer commentary.

They were:

  • Banjo Kazooie
  • Barkley Shut Up & Jam! Gaiden
  • The Mask
  • VVVVVV
  • Surgeon Simulator 2013
  • Borderlands 2
  • Metroid Prime

Super Metroid race was seriously good. Definitely worth the watch. I can't believe those guys do that Samus arm pump over and over for a single pixel of gain each time.

F-Zero GX was a JOY to see as well. That guy is seriously insane in a way that people can enjoy having no knowledge of the game, but for those that played it it's on another level. I thought Yoshifan's run last year was good (and it was!) but good lord. I must have put a few hundred hours into GX back in the day. Finished very hard story, used to compete in the max speed ladder and was pretty good for a while (nearly broke the top 20 at one point.) I was in serious awe of CGN. There were no new techniques or anything that I hadn't seen from when I played, but the ability to pull them all off so easily and consistently is stunning. Cool to see that people are still setting new record times. Skipping energy in VH Chapter 5 is pure insanity and I can't believe he even took that guys bet on.

I miss F-Zero, I wish there was a new one..
