Best of 2010

Just like last year, I'm going to list out my favorite games of 2010.  These are what I feel are the best and do not reflect any scoring on any website or aggregate site.  If you agree, awesome, if you don't, oh well.

Keep in mind, the games are in no order.  I'm just going through a list of the year's releases month by month and remembering my favorites.

List items

  • Hands down one of the best games of the year and it came out in January. I knew this would be making the list with only a couple hours of playtime into it. BioWare continue to release amazing games and Mass Effect 2 was just further proof of that.

  • I know this won't be in a lot of people's lists, but this was a game I loved playing on the Wii.

  • While the game didn't live up to the enormous expectations I had for it, it was one heck of a game. I'm really looking forward to seeing where they go with the second.

  • I rented this game because I knew it wouldn't have much of a replay value, but it left a lasting impression on me. The story was great and it had some intense segments in it that left me wanting more. Great showing on the PS3.

  • One of my favorite games of the year and the best $20 game of all time. Wow, where did this one come from. Many people laughed at it's cheesiness and overall poor production value but I strongly feel they missed the point. The game was supposed to be cheesy with a low production value, and once you realized that, the game was amazing!

  • Each year the MLB franchise of baseball games releases a heck of a game. There weren't many changes this year from last, but the refinements were great to see.

  • My first Yakuza game and I loved it. I had no idea the series was so great. I'll be picking up 4 on day one after loving this one.

  • Nier came out of left field for me. I had no idea what this game was and ended up renting it on a whim from Gamefly. After playing it for a couple days straight, I realized I was playing something special. The haunting music is what sold it for me. I seriously think it's one of the best music scores of a game recently. Sure, some games have better music than Nier, but it doesn't work as well as it did in Nier. Top that with some fun gameplay, a strange but working story, and it's one of my favorites of the year.

  • Alan Wake was something most of us 360 fans have been looking forward to for years. When it came out, the only complaint I had for it was it's length. It was short as hell and had little replay value. But when a game is as good as this, it's ok to look past the length when the game is as fun and scary as Alan Wake.

  • I never played the original Persona games so I was pretty excited to pick up this one. Suffice to say, I really wish I had played it the first time around because I was most certainly missing out.

  • One of my favorite handheld games of the year. Unfortunately, it has since gone missing and my guy is stuck about 3/4 of the way through the game. I'll find it one day...I'm guessing the wife put it somewhere when cleaning.

  • Who didn't love Starcraft 2? The game took everything that worked in the original and made it better.

  • My first Ys game and most certainly not my last. It's fantastic.

  • Without a doubt, one of the best story games of the year. Enslaved had me hooked from the opening sequence straight up to the ending and I loved every minute of it.

  • Fallout is one of my favorite franchises and any installment is going to be a favorite.

  • My second Ys game (of the year no less) and it's better than the first. The puzzle gameplay and frantic dungeon crawling are tons of fun.

  • This game is serious contention to be my favorite of the year. I always loved AC games but this took it to a whole 'nother level. I thought this was going to be a lame attempt at getting additional money before Christmas and was really surprised to find it's better than AC2.

  • A strange little ds story game (visual novel type game) that I knew nothing about. I was bored and looking for a game to keep me occupied while the wife had the tv in the basement. Couple hours later, I couldn't stop following this crazy mystery game that is surprisingly mature. I recommend!

  • I didn't play the first Golden Sun games but I'm loving this one. Easily one of my top handhelds of the year!
