I kinda despise most modern music, but the Dirty Projectors are pretty darn good. That cover album of Black Flag's Damaged was very different, in a good way.

K'naan-Troubador is the best album this year by far.

Edited by Ineedaname

That music video is epic.

I'd also like to add for the bands I listen to most of them released albums last year, Kasabian's Prodigy and Franz Ferdinand's new ones are worth noting though all of which I really liked.

As a sidenote I'll be bumping this around September.

Edited by Illmatic

Not really into rock so never listened to Franz or Projectors but loved the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Lonely Island albums, Yeah Yeah Yeahs to be more specific. The "Skeleton" track in particular is a song I've yet to grow tired of.

To diversify this post a little bit for my Hip-Hop heads, I'd argue that Mos Def's The Ecstatic and Cradle Orchestra's Velvet Ballads are very solid releases this year and for jazz fans out there looking for something a little different Soil & Pimp Sessions' Planet Pimp is an awesome album as well.

I like Franz Ferdinand, but I have not listened to much of their "Tonight" album. I actually forgot about it, thanks for the reminder!

I have not listened to many CD's from this year, but I really like Dichotomy by Becoming the Archetype. It's actually a pretty good CD, even though the last one was not so great in my eyes.

It's been a slow start to the year, but it's gonna pick up real soon. For now though, Thursday's Common Existence is my album of the year, and "You Were The Cancer" from that album is the best song. I don't care about music videos.

At the moment, I like Dream Theater's newest album "Black Clouds and Silver Linings," some great prog metal stuff there.

I also like Pearl Jam's "Ten: Legacy Edition"

The Mars Volta-Octahedron
Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band - Outer South

That list is missing two crucial additions:

If I can think of anything else, i'll add later.

I haven't bought in album in years. Why pay a bunch of money for a bunch of songs I probably won't listen to when I can purchase individual songs for a buck over the internets?

Posted by darkspirit138

Not been too good so far, to me, and Im at the age where the music industry is or should be targeting.

Anyway, for me its probably Number 1.

Posted by r3b3lr0b0t

Oh I also think this song is amazing.

I personally have mostly enjoyed Metric's Fantasies and the Decemberists' The Hazards of Love the most, though the latter was mostly because I was able to attend the live premiere at Stubb's. Unfortunately, no music has really surprised thus far this year.

I can't really think of anything that has come out so far this year that I can remember even hearing!  lol  Then again, I'm still spinning Misery Signals' Controller album.  Such an incredibly well-written album that truly blends genres so well.

*EDIT*  That video for "Ebb & Flow" was shitty quality and didn't do justice to the amazingness of the song, so I went for "A Certain Death".  Personally, I hate the video, but whatever...

21st Century Breakdown had some good songs.

Oh, one more honorable mention: Best Top 40 song this year

I want Dream Theaters new album. Badly.

So far, I've only bought 3 albums from this year. Crack the Skye by Mastodon, 21st Century Breakdown by Green Day, and Misanthropes by Celeste.

Mastodon's release is my preference out of those 3, I'll have to see if Dream Theater usurps that position.

This is possibly the best single:

This years been quite good though

Who are they?

I can't think of much...some of Phoenix's stuff is pretty good.

I love that song when I first heard it on YouTube but on the same note that video seriously creeps me out, on a nightmarish level.

Mastodon - Crack the Skye

Edited by jakob187

lol  I keep forgetting that Crack The Skye came out this year.  It's a good album, don't get me wrong...but I don't really think it's a good representation of the Mastodon I know and love.  Blood Mountain was vastly superior to Crack The Skye.

Another album I've been diggin' on lately is Parkway Drive's Horizons, although the album has apparently been out for about two years.  Fucking brutal as Hell.

The last album I'll throw out there is Scar Symmetry's Holographic Universe.  Damn fine Gothenburg album.  Too bad the lead singer left the band, as that guy has a killer set of pipes on him:

Metric - Fantasies

@StaticAndFlicker:
Thanks for posting that, I heard the song a while ago and loved it, but didn't know who it was by or the name of the song.

Amazon.com/MP3 is your friend... most of the albums that I've bought were on the Deal of the Day section for under $4

Personally, I don't care about paying full price for an album, as it's all just votes for the record company to see so they'll say "alright, we'll keep these guys around and let them make some more albums".  I'm well aware that the band actually only gets about 3 cents for every album sold, but it still doesn't make me care about price.  If I like it, then I'll buy it.

Can't really be considered a new release, but still amazing - I love Pearl Jam.

@jakob187:
pretty much agreed, if you want to support the band directly, go to the concert or buy a shirt..... but I respect any company willing to  take a price cut in order to spread the band to more people

@HandsomeDead: Bonkers is a solid tune, and a great way to back up Dance Wiv Me. I second that nomination, fer sure.

For my part, this is the third time I've professed my love of Karnivool's new single on these boards, but I'm donning my purple pimp hat again...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Wavering Radiant from Isis.

Black Clouds & Silver Linings by Dream Theater
Octahedron by The Mars Volta

I listen to weird stuff, but I already saw both of these in here, which makes me happyface.

Oh, I'm also mad into Röyksopp, and I'm loving that they're releasing two albums this year. Junior hasn't grabbed me as instantly as The Understanding did, but the tune Vision One is still one of my favourite songs of the year.

@jakob187: I don't know which album of Mastodon's I'd say is my favorite.  I'm new to them though, got Crack the Skye and liked it so much I bought Blood Mountain and Leviathan shortly after.

Figure I'll throw in my most recent purchase.  The Devil Wears Prada - With Roots Above and Branches Below and Dance Gavin Dance - Happiness  Neither is amazing or anything but I'm enjoying both of them.

My favorite so far has been St. Vincent's - Actor album

Posted by ahriman22

Uroboros - Dir En Grey
A rope is there and Hope is there - Dali

That's all I can think of.

It takes me an excruciating amount of time to get to new albums, and I'm sure had I heard it more than once it would be right up there, because they're a great band.

Same applies to new releases by The Mars Volta, mewithoutYou and dredg.

@r3b3lr0b0t: I love that grizzly bear song! Such a good band! So I'd put that song and the album Veckatimest in my favourites.

For me the best album is by far Merriweather Post Pavillion by Animal Collective with tMy Girls being the best song/single. Other albums I've enjoyed are Manners by Passion Pit; These Four Walls by We Were Promised Jetpacks; Wall of Arms by The Maccabees (Love You Better is an immense song!).

Can't think of anything else at the moment!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs- It's Blitz

Joel Plaskett's album Three is amazing. Three discs, 27 songs.

Below is the video for the albums first single. Below that is one of my favorite tunes from the album.

I'd say Late of the Pier's album, Fantasy Black Channel, but that came out in 2008. There really hasn't been anything to come out that really has interested me. The collaboration by N.A.S.A. was really sub par at best. At this point, I am waiting on Deftones' Eros and Massive Attack's "LP5". I was originally waiting for Charles Hamilton's first album, but the guy is a complete douche bag.

I think if NAS went back to his roots and released an album by the end of the year it would be a hit.

ATTN: metalheads

Check out Black Math Horseman's Wyllt if you haven't already.

Pitchfork said:

"Black Math Horseman = Led Zeppelin's bombast + Black Sabbath's rhythm section + 1970s psych rock dilation + Isis' minimal-maximal dynamics."

I'd like to throw in the other Animal Collective single.... besides this and "My Girls", I think all Animal Collective is is noise... but they can make some amazing songs if they go a little bit less experimental

I Enjoy The Von Bondies new album. it's not bad.

@Ivanetc:

A Dan Deacon fan?! Hell yeah! Bromst is life changing.

J Dilla's first posthumous album was pretty awesome too. DOOM and Blu have good passes over his beats, and just thinking about how big his unreleased catalogue is makes me so happy, even though he's gone, and his mother is having a hard time handling his estate.

Jay Stay Paid: Highest rated album on Metacritic right now

DOOMs album was sub-par compared to his previous stuff, but a new Madvillainy's on the way and Absolutely was the best track on Born Like This so I can't complain.
Mars Volta also released half a good album ( First 4 songs are the shit, not so much the other 5)
