Best of 2011

This list is kinda cheating, as I am doing this way after the fact. Like 5 years after the fact. So yeah I didn't play all these titles in the year 2011, but they all released that year. I dunno, should be fun.

I should probably apologize to no one in particular that I didn't make the time for Yakuza 4 (after absolutely loving Yakuza 3), Alien: Infestation and El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron.

Honorable Mentions - Aban Hawkins & the 1000 SPIKES, Star Fox 64 3D, LittleBigPlanet 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, and Shinobi.

Games that weren't the worst of the year or anything but left me cold/didn't live up to expectations - Ms. 'Splosion Man, Bastion, and Bulletstorm.

List items

  • This is the game that young teenage me would have never thought possible. Finally an installment worthy of the original trilogy, possibly better even. Dat storymode!

  • It was a tough choice sticking Skyrim at number 2, but it has nothing to be ashamed of. It's a truly amazing immersive world that you can tackle however you choose. Remarkable experience.

  • Being an advocate for 2d platformers I felt this title still exceeded my lofty standards. Some much playful joy emanating from every nook and cranny. Stunning art here. Love the autoscroll levels!

  • I doubt many people were anticipating this one as much as I was, but regardless I wasn't disappointed. Improves on the original in smart ways, and doesn't budge on the difficulty.

  • Screw the haters! I had a total blast shootin' alien scumbags with Duke. The not self serious tone of the game was really refreshing for me.

  • I remember being pretty hyped for Bastion and expecting it near my top 10 but look who snuck in instead! ITSP fulfilled the Metroidvania itch really really well! Didn't have high expectations and got rewarded with an engaging exploration title. Big fan of the art style here!

  • I admit I never was a fan of the 3D games in this series, but holy hell this gorgeous 2D action game was brutally challenging and a ton of fun. Felt like an old school game.

  • This Terry Cavanagh joint was really awesome. Simplistic design with great controls and music. Had some great challenge in collecting all the trinkets!

  • Honestly if I chipped away at this game a little more it would probably rank higher but as it stands I had a great time with what I did see. Love the dark tone and music.

  • Rage is beautiful and the guns FEEL really good. Like Killzone 2 good. I wasn't super fond of the structure of the world but feeling like Mad Max for a little while is pretty rad you guys. Big props for using John Goodman!
