GOTY 2011

Didn't play (or play through) as much as I was probably hoping this year. Having not yet played Arkham Asylum, Arkham City had no chance of making my list. I'm holding out for a fixed (or at least, eventually complete-ish) version of Skyrim for the PS3, and will probably wait for Uncharted 3 to drop in price. This just in: I'm cheap!

List items

  • I can't believe I lived in a world where this didn't exist for so long. One of the best games I've played in years.

  • The only full-retail console game I played through this year. Still haven't touched the co-op (got sick on the weekend of another LAN party) but really makes its case as a full-retail sequel to the much-loved original.

  • Depending on when you catch me, I am either the Dumbest Chemist in Space or a Molecular God. Amazing puzzle game.

  • Up through 8-6 at the time of this writing, it's been a great nostalgia trip. Can't wait to see what's after the "end".

  • This game makes me weep for humanity and myself. Why can't I stop playing it?

  • More games should be made with the love and care that went into this complete remake.

  • I spent a day at a LAN party this spring playing through the entire campaign, and it's one of the best multiplayer experiences I've had in years. Completely bonkers, and pretty funny, too.

  • SPLODE JEEP LEVEL BANGBANGBANG NEED FRIENDS TO PLAY MULTIPLAYER SAD

  • I feel a little bad for making as little progress through this game as I have given the human cost of its development, but can't ignore the technical feat they achieved.

  • While I'm not crazy about including reissues on a proper Best-Of list, the originals are too great to ignore. The compilation also rights a nearly decade-old wrong by providing a great reversible cover to atone for Ico's original US art.
