2011: Complete Playlist

All the games I played throughout 2011, mostly a list to satisfy my newfound compulsive desire to keep track of my own gaming trends. Perhaps this is me trying to figure out my habits and why I play the games I play, which ones do I actually finish and why? [For comparison's sake, 60 out of the 110 played games were completed.] The year started with my HDTV dying and having to be repaired/replaced, so for the first month I played old PS2 games from the pile of shame. In May, I finished my Bachelor's degree and found myself with a lot of spare time. Then around late September, my 360 Pro finally gave up the ghost with an out-of-warranty E-74 death.

I forgot why I love and hate these type of games. Now I remember. Hate is more powerful.
47. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle

I hate Ryuji, the motorcycle boss. Highlights the worst part of the game: the controls.
48. Muramasa: The Demon Blade

Still need to get the final endings. I'm amazed by the hours I've spent playing this, even if I zoned out through the backtracking. I shouldn't have enjoyed it (the first two hours I didn't), but eventually I did. The food system is brilliant. ... So close to forging the rest of the swords.

[PC] So, the game is broken. Won't save progress, but luckily there's a solution over in the Steam forums, http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1618420 . Go to Documents\Over the top games\nyxquest and delete the following: slot0.dat slot1.dat slot2.dat . Even in mid-game this'll work.

The Arrival DLC. [Spoiler-ish?] What a delightfully nice way to ruin any desire to play ME3. I never thought anything could make Shepard any less likable than he already is -- he was like a loveable puppy who pushed asshats off balconies -- but the writers managed to make him a mass-murderer of an entire system. Wow. Genius move. Just when you thought the Zaeed DLC was pointless... here be The Arrival. [Also, how many other people had to re-download the 4 GB of DLC they deleted months ago because you couldn't continue your game without them installed? BLEGH.]

75. Deadly Premonition

Going back to the pile of shame. Brand new copy opened, and now I'm wondering why I have waited. As I was describing it to a friend: "I'm playing a horrible game. And I'm enjoying it. Because it's horrible. And it knows it is horrible. Because it knows you'll enjoy it."
76. Metroid: Zero Mission

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet left me jonesing for Metroid, and since I missed the GBA generation, this seemed like a perfect place to start.
77. TRAUMA

Premise seemed interesting enough to warrant the $7 purchase. Navigation can occasionally be too cumbersome, with the Okami-esque drawing system not fully explained. Why am I making Sprint ads with my movements and actions? The woman's VO is -- to put it nicely -- boring, delivered dryly without emotion as the short soundtrack loop repeats a bit too much. There's a lack of drive with the game, yet it is incapable of reaching a point of calmness that I believe it's after. These dreams start to feel like unwanted and unwarranted nightmares.

79. Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale

Couldn't get past the 80,000 mark, so now having to restart. Headdesk.

Recettear's horrible dungeons probably opened me up to finally playing this.

Cute but dislike the camera angle.

My feet are grateful that I have another controller. Elsewhere, my eyes aren't as grateful due to sensory overload. So many sparkles.

It's the little details that seem to make this game more than just an overload of cuteness.
87. Dragon Age II

First few hours seem to be fine. / And then I got to Act 2 and realized that I've already explored most of the world. Eh... Also, magically appearing enemies that either POOF! appear or jump down from eight feet from no apparent ledge is weirdly sloppy.

89. Shadows of the Damned

HA HA HA. PENIS. HA HA HA. (And I have a weird feeling that this would have made a great Wii game. Maybe it's because it feels like RE4, and I only played that on the Wii.)

A surprising amount of bathroom humor. Every future time I'm in a tough situation I want to get out of, I'll just claim I have really bad diarrhea.
91. God of War: Origins Collection

Chains of Olympus looks just okay (Kratos' blades, especially in close ups, are pixelated and distracting). Yet there is a great sense of weight and scale that's impressive. Ghost of Sparta is great. The first God of War game since the original that's just as good.
92. Heavy Rain

I can't help but think Heavy Rain is a giant piece of shit. (Edit: well, at least the first few hours are a giant piece of shit, but it gets incredibly better.)

95. Ninja Gaiden Black

Second attempt to play this. It's been a long enough time for me to forget how frustrating this game is.
96. Vanquish

Was playing through this when my 360 started to have weird graphic problems. First, I thought it was a pretty awesome effect, corruption of the screen and all. Then I realized, no, that was just my 360 dying. E-74, out of warranty. Guess I won't be playing 360 games until holiday sale time.
97. Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon

First-hour impression: It's kinda ugly, and it's kinda janky. Constantly pointing the Wiimote as a third-person flashlight isn't fun. I want to believe there's something special about this game that attracted me to it, but shitty controls are holding me back.
98. Rage

The PS3 version is not the one for me. I don't know how the 360 version will hold up, but the constant loading of textures ruins the experience. I was hoping there would be some kind of motion blur to obfuscate the pop-ins -- not that I'd really want it there. The way guns and other weapons (and eventually bodies) vanish is just strange and clumsy. In a lot of ways, this does feel like Borderlands, without the great weapons and without a good sense of style. (Oh, there is style, but it's just a clusterfuck.) The whole narrative drive in the first two hours is non-existent. "You're special. These people want to kill you. We don't. So, here's a gun. Get at it." He exists in a world in which within a half-mile distance, there are four distinct accents. But who is this guy? I don't know. He's an emotionless protagonist, which seems out of date and passe. Protagonists don't have to talk, but they need to have some sort of character, attitude -- hell, I'd even take some machismo. Instead, here is just a generic blank slate who grunts and occasionally squeals like a pig when you run his four-wheeler into a wall, sending him strangely flying into the air. It's a shame that to compare it with a recent shooter I played, Resistance 2 is my preferred choice, and that is saying a lot. But damn, that's one nice sky.
99. Transformers: War For Cybertron

One hand, it's really cool; on the other, it's kinda boring. In some ways, it really feels like the other High Moon Studios' game Darkwatch. I hope I don't get completely bored halfway through with this game as I did with that one. ... YUP, got bored with it and will never finish.

Why am I enjoying this so much?
101. Alice: Madness Returns

At times it can feel so lush yet so dull, so fresh yet antiquated. There are weird texture problems (molten metal levels), and the stark contrast of style between the porcelain doll that is Alice and her real world gestured clay-like counterparts is disorienting. I'd rather Alice be a little uglier in the real world to match with the design of all the other characters. But her movements are occasionally gorgeous. Her hair tech surprisingly good, wrapping around her face when the wind is to her side; that's a nice touch. I am enjoying it, but by halfway through Chapter 2, I need breaks in between the monotony.
