Was there anything after the Dan walkout bit? I saw the run gfb for a sec before the fade to black, there wasn't some bit after that on the live stream?
Why is it disturbing? This is such a double standard, nobody seems to get all pissy when a woman is plastered over the window of a clothing store, or the show Chuck pimps out Yvonne Strahovski for the 100th time in sexy slow motion. Women are more often than not objectified and portrayed as the damsels in distress, that's just the way our culture is...it happens a lot more outside of gaming.
I don't know why it's only a big deal when it comes to video games really. I actually thought Chuck was pretty awful and pandering a lot of the time, that's not me trying to be a white knight I'm just tired of excuses to put women on the screen in stupidly provocative clothing, if I wanted to see some porn I'd be on Brazzers. (TM)
Actually plenty of people get upset about how women are portrayed in clothing stores. Places like American Eagle call their retail employees "models" to get away with the BS they engage in but people certainly rail against stores show women in poor ways in stores. Some of that is allowed to pass because you do have to show the clothes your selling, so its more about the body image ideals that they setup. Gaming doesn't really get much outside attention about this kind of stuff, most people mainstream people who complain about video games being bad are complaining about violence. I think it might seem like a big deal in games because people who play games are getting older and thus thinking a little more about what they play and more women are getting into gaming, so more people are talking about it.
Sexist is a good way to describe what the OP is talking about. It the fan service was both going both ways, sexism might not apply but as it stand you don't see much fan service for women in games, if it happens at all.
@scarycrayons: while I can appreciate that sometimes girls want to "girly" things, I always found the imagine series a little gross just based on the jobs they were based on. I saw a lot of them working at a game store and they all seemed to be jobs that females would stereotypical hold. The mama series seemed even worse, especially once science papa came out. Since I'm a guy, I wonder if those games ever bother women or the games are innocent enough to not be pushing any agenda?
Here's my take on it, (I'm mostly referencing MS) yes there may be more money in the mainstream audience but that's not who is hearing all this messaging that companies are putting out. Sure, the features of the xbox one may be super attractive to parents but most of the parents (non gamer) that I talk to at my job (I'll let you guess. Hint: stop here to get games) have not heard seen any of those conferences. Do you know how they are hearing about the xbox one (or not hearing about it)? Me, a core gamer who is disappointed with what he is seeing from MS. Sure, technically we aren't supposed to take sides at this unnamed store but the majority of the people employed are core gamers and there is something else to sell them on preordering that's cheaper (big factor to parents). As much as unnamed store is hated, we still drive a large share of sale of systems. So yeah maybe the core audience is small but our influence goes beyond us. I may never buy either system for financial reasons but I will likely sell a lot of next gen systems and I know which way I'll likely push people.
