"@baconbits33: But we're talking about valuable and educated artists and engineers who could be working 8 hour days and make as much money in other computer development businesses or graphic design businesses. "
I work in the professional video/film industry, which is well stocked with valuable and educated artists, engineers, and technicians, and I can't count how many shoots/editing sessions I've been involved in that went well past 14 hours. Staying up all night to put the buttons on a piece before deadline is commonplace, and you don't get paid any extra for it. Unforeseen problems, equipment failure, talent showing up late, incompetent producers--any one of these things can render what should have been a short, easy shoot a grueling exercise in patience, and that's just the way it is. It's the way the industry works, unless you're in LA or Britain where it's all unionized and then you can bitch about it. But in the Midwest, you fall in line. You don't really have a choice. I'd rather be freelance and work under short-term contracts than go be a button presser at a TV station. I'm not saying these guys don't have something to complain about or address, I'm sure they do, but it doesn't sound like something that anyone needs to go boycotting or picket-waving over. Plus, I want to play this game, so no. "
Another great point. People work hard if they have a good work ethic and/or are passionate.
Maybe some people are just as happy to be at work on the game for 16 hour per day as those employees that aren't.
I'm just going to copy what I wrote for the game's page:
" In January of 2010, a blog post published on Gamasutra written by the "Rockstar Spouse" pointed out the unethical practices used at Rockstar San Diego during this game's development, including 12 hour days and 6 day weeks, with lower-than-the-industry-average salary increase. A few commentors on the blog who claimed to have worked at Rockstar San Diego at some point mentioned that the project is "an organic disaster of the most epic proportions ", that the game has been in development for more than 4 years, and that game developers from Rockstar Toronto, Rockstar Vancouver, Rockstar Leeds, Rockstar New England, and even the Midnight Club team at San Diego had to be transferred over to work on the game to finish it. This controversy evoked similar emotions in media to the "EA Spouse" scandal, but it only seems as if the working conditions at Rockstar San Diego are considerably worse. "
Gamasutra is a legit industry publication and commentors who work or used to work at Rockstar San Diego and some sources for Kotaku have confirmed such practices. One of the commentors said that 15-16 hour days were becoming a norm. This is unethical. The employees should just have a massive walkout.
And us, the consumers should show that we don't want people to be depressed or have "suicidal tendencies" because of making a fucking video game.
"
Can't employees just find a new job and quit if they are not happy? I don't understand about being forced to work 6 days a week and 15 hours a day. Did the managers threaten their children's lives or the family pet?
I can't wait to get obsessed with this game like the first one. So much fun but the co-op sounds strange and like it was tacked on at the end like some kinda rush job.
Hopefully it will be better in game than how it sounds.
"I love it but giant bombs OT is pretty small compared to other boards so I never thought to bring it up here. Also just to be a dick Kobe is a creepy rapist and the most overrated player in NBA history. *poof* "
Possible raper. . .I can see that.
Most overrated player in NBA history? You lost me there. His game is sick and I hate the Lakers. I have hated them ever since the Kings lost to them in the 2002 Conference Finals. Fing Robert Horry.
I can't hate on Kobe's game thou. Lebron has a great chance to surpass him and even Jordan but you can't say that Bryant is over-rated. That is just ignorant.
